  1. Quodlibet Sans by Signature Type Foundry, $43.00
The new typeface system is based on legibility of Renaissance and Baroque Antiqua. It maintains the quality of drawings without an overpowering historical legacy. The current concept makes the system a universal whole. Abrading of sharp edges which could catch one’s attention leads to a fine rounding of details. In this way, a sans drawing does not look hard and sterile unlike most of its contemporaries. Special attention was paid to every detail of each letter. The professional question of how to incorporate brightening wedges into the dark places of individual strokes’ onsets was resolved by rounded shapes that have their graphic response in the detail of the serifs. Particularly in larger sizes the typeface offers drawing sophistication and dimensional interconnection. Apart from Cyrillic alphabet, the alphabet design includes Vietnamese accents.
  2. Therhoernen by Proportional Lime, $9.99
Arnold Therhoernen. (Arnoldus ther Hornen, Drucker des Dictys , Arnold ter Hoernen, Arnold ther Hoernen, Arnoldus TherHornen.) Who was this guy? He was a printer active in the city of Cologne, having graduating from the university there. He learned his craft under Ulrich Zell. He printed books from 1470 to 1482 when the plague carried him off. Was he just another printer of the era? No, he brought out the first edition of the "Fasciculus temporum'' (The most popular work by a living author at that time.) And he was the first to use both a title page and page numbers. His page numbers, an idea probably suggested to him by Werner Rolevinck, were interesting in that they were centered half way down the page on the outer margin and were set in Roman Numerals.
  3. Citizen Kern by Pierre Tur, $9.00
Citizen Kern is a modern, geometrical grotesk typeface. It comes in 5 different styles and opentype features for a better use of typography: it’s good for both headlines and body copy. It was made from the simplest geometrical shapes for a universal appearance, with enhanced overlaps to ensure an offbeat look. Citizen Kern is meant to work for any graphic project. You can use it for branding, editorial design, signage or even motion design : its simple shapes make it super easy to animate. Do you love the classic sans serif fonts? We all do. But what if you could add some singularity to your projects? Then Citizen Kern is the ideal pick for you. It will never be as perfect as the classics but will definitely offer an alternative, and freshness to your work.
  4. Ariata by Monotype, $50.99
Ariata™, from Malou Verlomme, is three typefaces in one. Like phases of the moon, they gracefully meld from one to the other. The “Text” weights are sturdy designs that perform as well in blocks of copy as they do in the occasional headline. The “Display” versions of Ariata are delicate but confident designs that shine in large sizes, while the “Stencil” typefaces are eye-catching and provocative. Each version is available in four weights, from a forthright regular to a robust black, making for a family that is comfortable taking on a wide variety of tasks. The individual designs can be combined with each other to create a distinctive, yet cohesive typographic statement, or stand on their own as confident communication tools. If you want a little more variety, Ariata’s solid glyphic shapes will serve as a dynamic counterpoint to just about any Humanistic sans. Space economical and distinctly original, Ariata easily creates commanding headlines, pull-quotes and subheads. Packaging, game branding, posters, book jackets and advertising design are all also within its comfort zone. While primarily intended for print applications, Ariata’s full-bodied x-heights, generous counters and clear apertures make for a design that is also at home in many digital environments. Verlomme is an award-winning Senior Type Designer at Monotype. He has a degree in graphic design from l'École Duperré in Paris, and an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading. He taught type design at several universities in Paris and still occasionally lectures and gives workshops. His typeface Camille has the honor of being part of the collection at France’s Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP). Verlomme also designed Placard® Next, Madera™ and Johnston100, London’s new underground branding typeface. 5. ITC Pino by ITC, $29.99
The ITC Pino™ typeface family is Slobodan Jelesijevic’s second suite of commercial fonts. Although a small family of three weights, it is remarkably versatile. Like many typefaces, Pino grew out of a desire for a particular kind of design. Jelesijevic was creating a series of illustrations for a children’s magazine and needed a typeface that was lighthearted, legible and would complement his illustrative style. Unable to find exactly what he needed, he decided to make his own font. “I spent the better part of a day looking for just the right typeface,” he recalls. “Of course, the hard part was finding something that would harmonize perfectly with my drawings. A custom font was not part of the project brief or budget, but I thought that perhaps I could use it again.” The regular weight of Pino became the solution to Jelesijevic’s problem. Jelesijevic did use the font again, but quickly realized that the single weight needed companion designs. Pino Bold and Black followed in quick succession. Before licensing the designs to ITC, the three-weight family provided headlines, book cover titles and even short blocks of text copy in several of Jelesijevic’s design projects. Born in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia, in 1951, Jelesijevic graduated with a degree in graphic communication and lettering from the Faculty of Applied Arts in the University of Arts in Belgrade. Currently, in addition to typeface design, he is sought out as a graphic designer and illustrator. When not working on design projects, he teaches graphic communications at the Faculty of Art in the University of Niš, Serbia. Pino is a stressed sans of slightly condensed proportions. Pino’s generous x-height, clearly defined counters and distinctive character shapes enable it to fulfill a wide variety of typographic applications. Friendly without being sanguine, the Pino type family will communicate with charm and vitality.
  6. Plinth by Magpie Paper Works, $42.00
Hand-drawn by an architectural renderer's daughter, Plinth is an craftsman-inspired font that leaves a strong and lasting impression. Plinth includes multi-language support as well as a variety of OpenType features including decorative alternate caps, double-letter ligatures, complete fractions, currency figures, and 4 stylistic sets. Set One replaces commonly used titles (Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms., and Dr.) with complementary hand-drawn versions. Set Two replaces 8 commonly used prepositions (and, the, to, to the, or, of, for and at) with complementary wordforms. Set Three seats counting contractions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) in their proper superscript place. And Set Four provides a fancy alternate of both ampersand and asterisk. Plinth is perfect for the designer, architect or orderly list-maker in all of us.
  7. Neuron Angled by Corradine Fonts, $29.95
Neuron Angled is based in the idea of Neuron, the original font designed in 2012 by Corradine Fonts' team, keeping from its predecessor the proportions and slight narrowness. In this version the rounded edges are replaced by sharp contours and flat endings. A broader typographic system is proposed in Neuron Angled to obtain a versatile and modern typeface without missing its original distinctive style. The neutral aspect of the family allows its application in a wide range of projects specially in those related with branding, signage and editorial design. The Neuron Angled family consists of four styles with eight weights each one, for a total of thirty two fonts. The different fonts of the family are not just complementary to each other, but can be used to complement the original version of Neuron. Its wide character map provides coverage for Western European, Eastern European and Cyrillic scripts.
  8. Robofan by César Puertas, $12.00
Robofan is a vintage Open Type font based on the logo of reconfigurable robots (toys and characters) from the mid 1980s. The typeface was conceived when looking at the author’s own collection of Transformers, he noticed many basic drawing and spacing problems, missing characters, incorrect accent shapes and a lack of proper rhythm in the typeface used in the newest toy’s packaging, mistakes that didn't happen in the toys back in the 80s. These mistakes were so evident that the author decided to look back at the original lettering from the 80s to capture the original spirit of the Transformers. Robofan contains true small caps and has full support for Cyrillic scripts and Central European languages. The full character set consists of more than 700 glyphs. Robofan is ideal for computer & video games, merchandising and all kinds of products related to science fiction, robots, cyborgs, aliens and everything else.
  9. Galix by Eclectotype, $40.00
Galix is a technical sans designed to look futuristic without any of the retro appearance often found in this genre. It has a squarish, slightly condensed anatomy, and is characterized by thin joints and deep ink traps that add a sparkle to the otherwise monoline typeface. In the italic styles, these cuts are accentuated even more which creates a feeling of speed in the letterforms. Galix is optimized for display typography (the ascender height is the same as the cap height, and the spacing is somewhat tight) but the middle weights are very readable at smaller sizes, where I'd recommend adding a little tracking. OpenType features include ft and tt ligatures, stylistic sets/alternates, automatic fractions, tabular, superscript and subscript figures, case sensitive forms. Perfect for websites, apps, infographics, magazines and logotypes, Galix is technical but with a warmth and personality that is often missing from this genre.
  10. Mixcoatl Mono by URW Type Foundry, $19.99
The Typeface «Mixcoatl» by Elia Salvisberg was developed as a part of a course at the Lucerne School of Design and Art in 2016. Based on the book «The Empire of the Inca», a display-font has been created, which is inspired by the graphic language of the South American Empire of the Incas. At the beginning, only capital letters were designed but there was the desire for a complete typeface – which is why the missing signs were added. The font is based on a grid, so the characters are constructed equivalently and a uniform geometric font arose. The name was adopted from the god of hunting who plays an important role in the mythology of the Aztecs and appears in various forms. The uppercase letters can also be represented and combined in two alternative character-sets, so there are a lot of opportunities to combine uppercase words in different forms.

  13. Wintanceastre by Hanoded, $25.00
I am a HUGE fan of Bernard Cornwell’s ‘The Saxon Stories’. Ever since a television series has been made, the series of books is also know as ‘The Last Kingdom’. I have read them all, at break-neck speed and I can’t wait for the next book!! Wintanceastre (Winchester) is based on a 10th century Latin manuscript. I have tried to stay close to the original letters, but since Latin does not have all modern glyphs, I found myself designing the missing ones. So, before you scold me for having made a font that is historically inaccurate: it was never meant to be an exact replica, nor would anyone want an exact replica, as it would be useless for modern texts and designs. Wintanceastre comes with a whole bunch of ligatures and alternate glyphs. Use it for any design that needs a little ‘Dark Ages’ look!

This dream has come true with the technical support of Karayel's school friend Sabahattin Kayış, a graduate of the Istanbul School of Applied Fine Arts (Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts). The biggest problem of handwritten fonts in the font world is the difficulty of reading in long texts due to their curved and flexible letters that create spacing problems when used side by side. The "Karayel Calligraphy", on the contrary, is created as a solution to this problem. It's a font that is sufficiently fluid, visually satisfying and easy to read. In particular, a lot of effort is made to ensure the utmost harmony between the character's spaces. The “Karayel Calligraphy” font is now available for download.
