So this is my tribute to Piggy who got killed by that falling plastic rock in the movie. May he live forever through this typeface, on birthday cards, or maybe some sweet candy packaging or why not through an graphic identity for a toy company?

Ataxia was designed to be used in long texts such as books and magazines. The font has the weights regular, bold, italic and bold italic as well as ligatures, small caps, oldstyle numbers and support for many languages (unfortunately not German: ß is missing, lower quotes ‚wrong‘ and „missing“), with more than 500 glyphs.

I happened to come across a facsimile of a sample of text with typeface made by Sweynheim & Pannartz in 1476. I scanned the sample, and redraw all the available glyphs from the sample in RobFog. After that I added the missing characters by copying and pasting the forms of the original characters, and filling in the missing parts.

It’s not often a vintage cartoon can inspire a type design, but such is the case when the name “Daffy Duck” is hand lettered on a mailbox in the 1946 Warner Brothers cartoon “The Great Piggy Bank Robbery” (famously being a send-up of the popular Dick Tracy comic strip by Chester Gould). Creating the condensed version for the Brandon Text was the missing project to complete the Brandon series. Brandon Text was created as a companion to Brandon Grotesque. When we started to designed Brandon Grotesque Condensed we felt that there should also a condensed counterpart for small sizes; so we made Brandon Text Condensed. While a condensed typeface is not just a squeezed original, we took the Grotesque Condensed as a starting point for the Text Condensed version simultaneously we also kept an eye on Brandon Text to find the perfect missing variables.
