With all ego aside, Romp was designed and influenced by my daughter, Angel. For some time now, she has wanted me to design a font based on her handwriting. But each time I sit down to do it, I run into more that she needs to do and redo. On a recent attempt, I ran into the same situation again. Instead of moving on to something else, I decided to whip out a sumi brush and start making letters...for me, type design is something a little ‘serious’ and never a time to just have fun. This typeface proved that notion wrong—it really was fun. As a result, each letter encouraged another and the design grew...and grew! The happy result spawned 3 separate sets of letters & numerals (small caps and some ligatures too!). Using the beauty of OpenType, these 3 sets have been fused into one, randomly generating font set. If you are using any type of OpenType enabled application, then the Romp Pro typeface is the way to go. They include everything found in the 3 separate variants for each style as well as entirely expanding offering of additional small cap and ligature sets.

While watching the 1947 holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street”, one scene in particular presented a chance to develop a retro type design. ‘Kris Kringle’ suggests to a mother visiting with her child in the Macy’s toy department to try Gimbel’s for a toy she couldn’t find at the store. The news of this behavior reaches Mr. Macy himself, who embraces the practice as a brilliant marketing strategy. A number of departments are then presented with reference books containing competitor ads, and the visual of the cover stating “R.H. Macy & Co. Shopping Guide for the Convenience of Our Customers” shows on screen. The thin, Art Deco sans serif monoline with a few serif-like hooks added onto some characters became the basis for Shopping Guide JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The letters in Bouncer are round because they all begin as a ball and then have parts of the ball cut away. Bouncer was one of the earliest typefaces from Ingrimayne Type. Lower-case letters are smaller versions of the upper-case letters. BouncerTwo, designed twenty years after the original Bouncer, continues playing with the idea of making letters by cutting out parts of a circle, but in this case the circles are interlocking. All letters are upper-case but some of those on the lower-case keys differ from those on the upper-case keys. BouncerTwo is eye-catching but not highly legible.

Back to 1880-1900 when a number of events were coming together, the country was evolving from a local market economy to mass merchandising, rail systems were being built and color lithography was becoming more affordable. The first rail cars full of oranges were being shipped from Southern California to the East - what a treat during a cold winter’s day. Labels were pasted on every fruit crate and these labels had large images of oranges and orange groves. With technological advances in soldered cans, canneries popped up all over the country. In order to market their products many California Canneries pooled their resources to form the California Fruit Canners Assn. in 1899. This font was inspired from that era. Linotype Startec, from Jan Tomás, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. This is another fun font from Tomás, who also designed Alphabat, and the two share some characteristics. Linotype Startec is an outline font whose unique forms are reminiscent of futuristic dreams and space adventures. It should be used in point sizes of at least 18, but the phrase 'the bigger the better' fits this font well. The careful details and figures of the alphabet turn into UFOs and space ships from another world when set in very large point sizes. Linotype Startc is best for very short texts and headlines.

This statuesque semiscript is based on Mirabelle, an in-house design from the German foundry of Wagner & Schmidt, released in 1926. Kismet has the look of a modern, ornamental alphabet, but looks are deceiving: the typeface was designed by John F. Cumming in 1879. The basic forms are strictly constructed, most based on the form of a circle, a shape which also appears again and again in the ornamentation. Cumming decorated his figures generously with spiral elements and tiny circles in the middle of the letters. Characteristics which suggest the beginning of the Jugendstil are the floral designs and some individual forms, for example, T, M or P. Rolling gemstones… The name "Eris" is again borrowed from Greek mythology, is related to the myth "the apples of Hesperides" which were gold and one of them got the Erida!!! More about this myth can be found on the web... And in this font (as in one section in the "Cyceon" font) I have mixed in the lower case with the capitals in many letters.I tried here to give a different illustration in lowercase letters, simply because of whims or because the monotony is tiring me!!! One can also mix here with two levels to get a third color depiction using the “ErisPro-Black” with “ErisPro-Strap” or “ErisPro-BlackIt” with “ErisPro-StrapIt” This series is composed and includes twenty-four fonts with 658 glyphs each, with true italics and supports Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.
