Praitor is based on a devotional inscription to the goddess Diana found a short distance from Rome in 1887. It is an early style from before 100 BC and has some characteristics of Etruscan lettering. It's a rough, strong font which works very well for distinctive titles.

Koehler Sans JNL was inspired by a set of cardboard sign kit letters made by the Koehler Sign Company of Missouri (presumably) in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Not much is known about them, other than the letters looked interesting enough to turn into a font.

Bonlivet is an all capitals display face, which starts from Roman letter forms and pushes them into wild decorative extravagance. There is a somewhat early 20th century feel to this, but really it’s just a bit of good fun, with a hint of elegance thrown in.

In a vintage photograph, promotional signage outside an old theater for the 1929 early sound film “The Doctor’s Secret” had lettering in a wide, bold Art Nouveau slab serif design. This was the model for Talking Picture JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Fedot is a hand-drawn font, based on shapes of early cyrillic scripts (so-called "ustav" and "poluustav"). Lowercase typesetting with its variable letter heights is more brisk and authentic, and uppercase is more equable and neutral. Some of letters are the same in lowercase and uppercase.

Pomponianus comes from a 4th century inscription found in North Africa. It is an attractive example of early uncial lettering. Uncial inscriptions are quite uncommon, because although the style was well suited for writing on vellum, the curved letters made it more difficult to carve in stone.

French Serif Moderne JNL gives a slab serif treatment to the lettering comprising Jeff Levine's French Art Initials JNL. The font - containing a full character set - was inspired by a page from an early 20th Century French alphabet book posted online at an image sharing site.

The inspiration for Fence Post JNL comes out of an early 1900s manual for sign writing. A number of changes were made to make the design more aesthetically pleasing, but it retains its novelty effect of evoking the look of wooden fence posts or Western-themed typography.

Just two capital letters from a sign inspired Box Lunch JNL from Jeff Levine. The restaurant - an early 1950s favorite in Miami Beach, Florida specialized in fried chicken meals and other delights of the day - long before the big corporate chains took over the local landscape.

Antique is a bold, classic font with high stroke contrast and no bracketing on the serifs. This letter style was hugely popular during the early 19th century and was the basis for a myriad of other designs. This version is based on wood type of unknown origin.

Modeled from an example in the book “Lettering” by Harry B. Wright (1950), the poster alphabet shown was reminiscent of the kind of style used in the early 1900s by sign painters and show card artists. Vintage Poster JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Vox Populi was modeled after an early 17th century Latin translation of a Greek epos. It is a cursive typeface with a rough edge to it - not unlike the rather decayed original. Vox comes with a whole bunch of alternates and ligatures for that ‘ancient parchment look’.

A 1940s sheet music edition of an early 1900s song entitled "You Taught Me How to Love You, Now Teach Me to Forget" was set in a popular metal type slab serif face. It is presented digitally as Elite Resort JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

This came from a shop near Munich, Germany, and was a very poor proof with no font name on it. Never did identify it. When we cleaned it up, we liked it pretty well. We think it is typical of some early twentieth century art nouveau fonts.

Springfield is a narrow, western-style display face from Bob McGrath. The design recalls wood types that were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but which also found resonance during the 1970s. Use Springfield to liven up otherwise dull headline and logo projects.

Recreation JNL is Jeff Levine's own take on a popular vintage typeface from the late 50s or early 60s that's seen a resurgence in recent years. While the basic alphabet is somewhat modeled from the classic design, all the other characters in the font are original.

Designed by Peter Behrens, well known graphic artist and architect in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th century. This "Antiqua" was done for Rudhard's Typefoundry in Offenbach A. M. around 1902, and has been used in modern times for museum retrospectives of the designer's work.

Franz Kafka’s manuscripts have always been a source of inspiration for designer Julia Sysmäläinen. At first she was just interested in literary aspects but later she noticed that content and visual form can not be separated in the work of this ingenious writer. Analyzing Kafka’s handwriting at the Berlin National Library, Julia was inspired to design the typeface FF Mister – by now a well known classic. Over the years, FF Mister K became a handsome typeface family and even produced offspring: the Josef K Patterns. Some of Kafka’s most expressive letterforms were the starting point for these decorative ornaments. How do the Patterns work? Outlines and fillings correspond to the uppercase and the lowercase letters on your keyboard. You can use them separately or layer them on top of each other. If you write a line of “pattern-text” in lowercase and repeat it underneath in uppercase you get a row of fillings followed by a row of outlines. Now you can color them and then set line space = 0 to get a single line of layered colored ornaments. Alternatively, activating OpenType / stylistic set / stylistic alternates will also unite the two lines to a single layered line. Poets and musicians flourishing in southern France and northern Italy during the 11th to 13th centuries. Troubadour was designed by using a custom brush created with Adobe Illustrator. A digital tablet was used to draw all the characters in the font. The thick and thin strokes were created by applying pressure to the pen, like jesters dancing and bouncing in the streets as the music played.
