Years ago, I came across a vintage playbill and was struck by its lettering. The detailed floral pattern surrounded by thick outlines stayed in my mind even though the play's name and cast have faded. I finally tried to recreate the style from memory and Forgotten Playbill is the result. While all letters are actually capitals, the uppercase rotate slightly counterclockwise and the lowercase slightly clockwise. I suggest alternating between the two to reproduce my mystery inspiration.

The cover of the 1919 sheet music for "While Others are Building Castles in the Air I'll Build A Cottage for Two" had its title hand lettered in a wonderfully eccentric Art Nouveau serif design that typified the era. Also typical of the time was the habit of various songwriters to come up with wordy titles. This particular one checks in at fourteen words. Nonetheless, the sheet music's title inspired Air Castles JNL and its oblique counterpart.

The typeface DIN Mittel, offered by Elsner+Flake, is based on the DIN 1451 used in Germany since 1931. The DIN 1451 which was primarily seen in the areas of technology and traffic had to adhere to the so-called DIN Norms. Variations of the DIN 1451 are also employed in Austria, Eastern Europe, Greece and the Near East. Generisch - a german equivalent of generic - sans serif typeface has gain its own place among designers and earn such popularity due to its "simple" design. Generisch is influenced by early grotesk typefaces from early 1900's when sans was starting to get popular and used as a body type. Some old ligatures such as ch ck and ng are present in generisch (not the ct and st tho), old style numeral for better typesetting experience and more.

Manufactory JNL and its oblique counterpart were re-drawn from examples of a now-antique typeface used within many advertisements found throughout the pages of The American Stationer magazine, circa 1879. The term ‘manufactory’ was popular during this era; the word being a more archaic form of ‘factory’. There is a bit of Western flavor to this type design, as the spurred serifs and the top and bottom strokes are heavier than the vertical and mid-point stroke weights.

Bauen (worker in German) is a tribute to the Bauhaus school that has just completed its first centenary and whose ideas are still relevant. It is a geometric typeface inspired by the sans serif typefaces prevailing in those years, and whose cradle resides in the Bauhaus school. This font has been described as "one of the cutest fonts I've ever seen. I can imagine a beautiful, young 22-year-old fashion design student from Los Angeles, CA with this handwriting as she's writing in her journal." I have cleaned it up a bit, increased the size of all the dots slightly and then designed all the diacritics and expanded the character set. The lowercase "f" has a big overhang and the lowercase "j" goes really far to the left - I have programmed automatic (OpenType) Contextual Alternate versions that automatically substitute with shorter variants when letters collide. These alternate letters can also be switched on using the OpenType palette's Stylistic Alternates or Stylistic set 01 ("j") and 02 ("f"). In 1931, The Times of London commissioned a new text type design from Stanley Morison and the Monotype Corporation, after Morison had written an article criticizing The Times for being badly printed and typographically behind the times. The new design was supervised by Stanley Morison and drawn by Victor Lardent, an artist from the advertising department of The Times. Morison used an older typeface, Plantin, as the basis for his design, but made revisions for legibility and economy of space (always important concerns for newspapers). As the old type used by the newspaper had been called Times Old Roman," Morison's revision became "Times New Roman." The Times of London debuted the new typeface in October 1932, and after one year the design was released for commercial sale. The Linotype version, called simply "Times," was optimized for line-casting technology, though the differences in the basic design are subtle. The typeface was very successful for the Times of London, which used a higher grade of newsprint than most newspapers. The better, whiter paper enhanced the new typeface's high degree of contrast and sharp serifs, and created a sparkling, modern look. In 1972, Walter Tracy designed Times Europa for The Times of London. This was a sturdier version, and it was needed to hold up to the newest demands of newspaper printing: faster presses and cheaper paper. In the United States, the Times font family has enjoyed popularity as a magazine and book type since the 1940s. Times continues to be very popular around the world because of its versatility and readability. And because it is a standard font on most computers and digital printers, it has become universally familiar as the office workhorse. Times?, Times?
