RF Marshall was inspired by an 1883 tombstone, tucked away in a pioneer cemetery. The 4-sided marker is sparsely adorned with homespun carvings of a handprint, two tulip poplar leaves, and these words: "RF Marshall died 1883 Aged 72 years." The font faithfully reproduces the stone's hand-carved lettering and artwork, as well as artwork from other 18th and 19th century American headstones. Koch Antiqua, also known as Locarno and Eve, is the most popular face of one of the great lettering artists of the 20th century. This delicate display face has a small x-height, very tall ascenders, and main strokes that taper gracefully downward. Koch-Antiqua appeared extensively in advertising between the wars. Michael Gills, formerly a resident designer at Letraset, created the Fling typeface in 1995. Fling's letterforms are based on the Ronde --or round--script style from France. One of the most enduring type styles of the Art Deco era is Huxley Vertical. Its clean lines and stylish appeal have transcended changing times and tastes. Many typefaces have been inspired by the original, including the model used to create this font. The design was found in the book "Lettering and Alphabets", first published in 1946 by J. Albert Cavanagh. By re-drawing it from scratch, the missing numerals, punctuation, special characters and accents were added. Hagemann JNL and its oblique version are named in honor of one of Jeff Levine's friends within the type design community -- Michael Hagemann of Font Mesa.

Compass Next is a third edition of Compass TRF designed in 2002. The first time Compass TRF has been conceived was as a “geometric” Didone – all letters literally were drawn with a ruler and a compass. Second edition (2009) got additional styles – Flourish Initials and Small Caps. This time, the objective was to bring overall extreme geometrical expression closer to traditional letterform style of its “modern style” typeface category (Didone). All glyphs were redrawn including in alternative Decorative style, and additional Bold weight has been added. Typeface is released in OpenType format with extended support for most Latin languages.

Umberland Slab is an attractive family available in 3 different weights with italics. There’s a particular emphasis on simple geometric shapes and the way they interact with tall vertical strokes. Smooth curves and sharp angles blend together in a pleasing symmetry. Stroke widths are given variable degrees of contrast but serifs are consistent and heavy handed. Spacing is on the tight side with some lowercase pairs quite snug against each other. Umberland Slab would work well in small blocks of text, corporate logos, menus, or signage. This family is equipped with European accents/diacritics for international support, fractions, alternates, and ligatures.

Brrrrr is supposed to represent snow-covered letters, though it could also be letters covered with frosting. The lower case letters are identical to the upper-case letters. Buried in the font is another set of letters on Christmas tree ornaments. (They are on unicode characters in the 2400 block, circled digits and letters. See here.) The OpenType Stylistic Sets feature makes accessing these letters easier than using unicode, and another font, InsideLetters-Christmas, develops them further. The Brrrrr-Icing style can be used in a layer over Brrrrr to give the snowcap any color, not just the background color.

Prospera was designed without reference to existing roman faces. In its initial form, development was partially supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (Design Project Grant), as a design for use on 'low-res' digital output devices. Early releases had simplified detail in cross-bars and serifs, and hand-tuned bitmaps. As an original design, Prospera draws on principles of letterform developed during my studies of lettercarving (in Wales with Ieuan Rees) and Roman proportion. The design is idiosyncratic, perhaps more akin to Gill's Perpetua than to the monotonous corporate flavors so prevalent today.

The late 70s and early 80s is sometimes considered to be the period when headline typography went off the rails. Growing up in that period, some designers may beg to differ. Many geometric designs were available in dry-transfer and for the typositor, and were used everywhere a youth-culture look was appropriate - annuals, comics, club flyers, high-street boutiques, TV-advertised compila tion albums. Nightclubber is a fond homage to the excesses of the period, and should be used back-lit in pink neon or at a rakish 45 degree slant across a blurred photograph of a glitter ball.

ITC Peter's Miro is the work of New York designer John Peter. It was inspired by the letters used by Joan Miro in his paintings. No one used letterforms more frequently in his work than Joan Miro," says Peter. For his typeface, however, "considerable liberty has been taken with his [Miro's] original letters and missing characters have been added." Initially, I participated in the contest to design the logo for Bill Lloyd. In the end, the design was rejected, but letters remained. I then decided to continue with the idea and complete the entire typeface. After a couple of months, I realized that the typeface was imperfect, and now that I’m working on an updated Lloyd type, this one is free. The main characteristic of the typeface is its bold and curvy shapes. It is also tall and original in design. It was a great experience because it taught me how failure inspires people to move on, and create something better.

The “indalo” means messenger of the Gods in the Iberian language about 2500 BC. It was discovered in the Almeria, south of Spain, Indalo was a ghost that bring luck having a rainbow in his hands.
