Bergamot was inspired by vintage apothecary labels, but this font is actually quite modern in both style and effects. It features all caps plus 2 sets of alternates (so, 4 total variations for each letter). The coolest part… they intermingle randomly as you type! Ok, so it’s not exactly random, but that’s the easiest way to explain what you'll see. The letters are actually coded to rotate with their respective alternates. This effect is both useful or can be purely for fun! Let’s talk about the useful part for a sec… Repeating characters are often a dead giveaway that a font is being used. And sometimes we don't want that, right? We want to give the illusion that our design has been custom hand-lettered for a particular project… and can't be recreated by another. That’s exactly what this font aims to do. The randomizing effect is built into the Contextual Alternates feature and will likely be “on” automatically in your chosen program. The problem with scripts in general, and brush scripts in particular, is that the majority of them cannot be set in all-caps words or sentences. So as a rule of thumb most designers try to avoid brush scripts when they know they will be entering an all-cap zone. But here comes Bruschetta, so you won’t need to reduce your design options. Bruschetta is a great flowing brush script that can be attractively used in upper-lower, lower-lower, or upper-upper settings. Fishmonger originated from a commission of two fonts for the corporate identity of a fishmonger shop. When sketching the elementary principles for the lettering, the idea for a modern, extensive font family with a large number of styles was born. The first step consisted of defining the range of widths and weights. Then the master design Medium Regular was completed. The next step was adjusting the Extra Condensed Thin, the Extra Condensed Bold, The Extra Extended Thin and the Extra Extended Bold weights, as they are the vertices of an imaginary square map of the face. This meant that, in order to achieve a harmonious result, the x and y axis needed to be defined. From top to bottom, from the widest to the most condensed cut, the proportions are linear. However, from light to black, the line curves gently, allowing lesser difference between the light cuts, and a dramatic one between the heavier cuts. To ensure the original parameters were respected each position on the vertex was checked against the Medium Regular. After sorting out the ideal set-up, the remaining characters of each of the weights were drawn, and the remaining cuts were interpolated according to the principles above. Fishmonger is a functional, clean design, free of any buoyant, ornamental shapes, almost minimalist. Maybe this is what lends the type family its unique appearance.

Remastered in 2019. Wasabi is the re-imagining of my very first release, Iru. Like Iru, Wasabi was heavily influenced by the monument lettering style, Vermarco. The simple, geometric forms allowed for small lettering sizes to be sandblasted cleanly and has been a monument lettering workhorse for decades… the only issue centered around the lack of a lowercase or any other letters beyond the 26 uppercase glyphs and the numerals. Wasabi solves this with the same simple, efficient line reminiscent of the old Vermarco while bringing it into the 21st century. Visual and optical incongruities of the original uppercase were replaced with new interpretations for the capital letters, a new lowercase and small caps were​ produced and the original single weight alphabet was replaced with six new weights. Broadside Text is a companion to Broadside, and is optimised for use at smaller sizes. More open counters, more generous letter-spacing and additional fractions increase legibility. The original Broadside family is suitable for headlines and larger sizes, and also comes with condensed and extended versions. Broadside is a versatile, authoritative and functional family inspired by the sans serifs seen on ’40s and ’50s patriotic posters and period advertising. It is available in seven weights across condensed, normal and extended widths, each with reweighed italics. The type from this period was very often hand-drawn, and so differs considerably from poster to poster. Many American examples of this period use a Photo-Lettering style called Murray Hill and its derivatives, although their UK counterparts, designed by such luminaries as Abram Games or Tom Eckersley, are more stylistically diverse. Even though no single model is available to base a digitisation on, there are certain recurring stylistic quirks that give the type its unique flavour, and so the most interesting examples from several sources were be combined for the final family. Alternate short descenders, allowing for tighter line spacing, can be toggled on or off in the Opentype panel of Indesign or Illustrator. Tabular and lining numerals and a single-story ‘a’ are also available in all weights and styles.

Remastered in 2019. Wasabi is the re-imagining of my very first release, Iru. Like Iru, Wasabi was heavily influenced by the monument lettering style, Vermarco. The simple, geometric forms allowed for small lettering sizes to be sandblasted cleanly and has been a monument lettering workhorse for decades… the only issue centered around the lack of a lowercase or any other letters beyond the 26 uppercase glyphs and the numerals. Wasabi solves this with the same simple, efficient line reminiscent of the old Vermarco while bringing it into the 21st century. Visual and optical incongruities of the original uppercase were replaced with new interpretations for the capital letters, a new lowercase and small caps were​ produced and the original single weight alphabet was replaced with six new weights. The Parisii was a small Gallic people settled in the current Paris region, which gave its name to the city of Paris. According to Caesar (53 BC.), their main town (oppidum) was Lutetia (Paris). Parisii was born of inspiration to be leafing through some old magazines on the terrace of a cafe in the beautiful city that is Paris. Parisi is like the city: casual, youth, romantic, free spirited and, at the same time, sophisticated, elegant and classic. The Parisi family font is a lovely and casual handlettering script, which is based on gestual calligraphy. Parisi has a slight bounce and intentional irregularity giving your words a wonderful flow. Kubrick is an experiment in extremes. The Light font is very tall and slender, the Black font is very massive, and Kubrick's slender counters push some of its glyphs to the edge of recognition. The thin counters and negative spaces also give text set in Kubrick a definite visual sparkle, especially in all-uppercase settings. Because of its extreme letterforms, Kubrick is recommended only for large display use. The default letterspacing is set fairly wide to keep text legible. Kubrick was a double-experiment. One part of it was to see how heavy and massive a typeface I could make while still keeping it legible. The other part was to develop a Multiple Master font. Multiple Master fonts were a format developed by Adobe that allowed the user to change things like the weight and width of a typeface. Monollith started as just such a Multiple Master typeface, but when Adobe discontinued the Multiple Master format, I stopped work on the typeface. Later I decided to continue work on it, but as five separate font weights: Light, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold and Black. Very rectilinear letterforms with extremely narrow counters and negative spaces. The five fonts go from very thin and condensed to very heavy and extended. Use in large display settings where unornamented high visual impact is desired.
