Sandena began as an attempt at a harmonic convergence between the classic lines of Palatino and the curved flair of Optima - both favorites of mine from the great Hermann Zapf. As I’ve always loved the Swash characters of the 50’s and 60’s letterforms, I incorporated these alternatives to offer the more complete package that you see here - a humanist font in the truest calligraphic sense. Karlgeorg Hoefer designed Beneta in 1991, inspired by the Littera beneventana, the script of the Benedictine scribes from the 10th to the 12th century. During this time, scribes began to use wider pens and set them at a 45 degree angle to the paper, which caused their scripts to have radical stroke contrasts. This script was mainly used for books and certificates but disappeared by the end of the 13th century. Beneta revives the characteristics of this historic script, changing a line of text into an almost ornamental space. Beneta should be used in middle to larger point sizes for shorter texts and headlines.

The font SweynheymPannartz is strongly modeled after an example Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz used in their early printing venture in Subiaco, Italy which began around 1465. Their efforts were supported by Pope Sixtus the IV after they enthusiastically printed more books than they could sell. They not only brought printing to Italy, but also developed the first Roman style type. This font has over 600 defined glyphs to cope with modern needs, and also the ability to use several abbreviations common to that period. It also has an alternate minuscule “k” more modern in appearance for those that find the original too unusual.

Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Saussa typeface began life as brush-lettered artwork for fruit salad packaging in France. After the key letters had been painted, Patricia Pothin-Roesch switched to digital tools to create the final font. True to its roots, Saussa is a real advertising face, perfect for point-of-purchase displays. Even its name is consistent with its intended area of application: Saussa sounds a lot like the word “sauce.” Saussa is an informal script; its outstrokes function almost like serifs, and the capitals have a lowercase structure. The feelings this typeface conveys are due to the hand of its creator, Patricia Pothin-Roesch, an experienced brush-letterer.

Work on Scene began some time after designer Sebastian Lester joined Monotype Imaging in 2000. Clean, calm, and highly legible — thus the design brief Lester set for himself. Guillotine is inspired by an uncredited early 1970s film face called Rhythm Bold. While the original film type had plenty of round forms that were uneven and somewhat badly drawn to fit within the overwhelming pop wave of the time, this digital incarnation disposes of all curves, relies on a much sharper grid, and adheres to specific parameters of stroke widths and angles. Guillotine is a thick poster classic, mechanically constructed yet clearly exhibiting the idiosyncratic traits of hand drawing. Its forms embody the amalgamation of a multitude of influences, such as woodcut letters, punch card forms, and the unique art nouveau concepts that were popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The totality of the font is a strong display aesthetic that plays very well anywhere the eye is meant to see a strong but casual, sharp but hand crafted message. Carve is an African font that was inspired by fonts such as Othello and Neuland designed in the mid-1920s. Rather than attempting to re-create these fonts in a digital form as so many others have done, I have tried to capture the “spirit” of the period and emphasize the “woodcarving” style of the font, while simultaneously giving it a contemporary feel. As a result the characters differ markedly any of the original styles and have much less of an “Art Deco” look to them. To further modernize Carve, I have included all the characters required for a full character set (lower case, as well as all punctuation, numerals, diacritics, special characters etc). The result is a thoroughly modern re-interpretation. The numbers (0 to 9) bear no relation to any originals but, I believe, are fully in keeping with the upper and lower alphabetic characters of my font. Carve comes in two styles: --Regular: contemporary, angular African style --Incised: exaggerating the chunky, hand-carved "woodcut" effect. The "in-line" effect has been hand-crafted to avoid the mechanical effect of computer-generated inline effects.
