Balboa is a display design combining elements of early sans serif and grotesque types with contemporary types. It evolved from ATF Headline Gothic, Banner (a headline typeface I drew for the San Francisco Chronicle), and Newsweek No.9, a Stephenson Blake-like grotesque I designed for Roger Black's 1980 redesign of Newsweek Magazine. There are nine styles, including the three new styles that have been added in 2014: Medium, Light and Ultra Light.

A revival of sorts, Freaky Frog BF is modeled after an 1887 design from Central Type Foundry, called Grimaldi. Much warmth and charm have been instilled into the original design through among other means, reworked contours and serifs. Contours are smoothened, liberated from its roughness, while serifs have become somewhat concave. Verticals and horizontals appear to "swell" owed in part to flared shapes. The overall effect, I believe, is one of pure typographic endearment.

The Woodgrit family could originally be found on broadsides (posters, playbills) throughout the midwest on any public announcements. All original letterforms available were incorporated into the set with little modification. Typographic convention was limited to creating three weight to serve the needs of the design community. Woodgrit Heavy is a perfect headline weight; Woodgrit Medium fits nicely in subheads, and Woodgrit Thin enables this chunky font to even work well as body copy.

Fiorentina is a ecstatic, abundant, embellished script in the Renaissance tradition. It could have been made for the Medicis or Sforzas. But I designed it completely new after being inspired by colorful Florentine wrapping papers. I gave it many different swashes and understrokes, alternate upper- and lowercase characters, 659 characters in all! Yuge, apparently, is how New Yorkers pronounce huge. I have never been to New York, so I can’t tell if this is a fact. But I often hear a certain New Yorker pronounce it that way, so I guess it’s sort of true. Yuge is a handwritten font - made with a Sharpie pen. Believe me, it is a good font. It is fantastic. It is the best font ever. It is YUGE! ;-)
