MagMixer, a display typeface, was designed in 2005 for ParaType by Dmitry Kirsanov. During work on Magistral the designer had an idea of creating a more decorative face based on Magistral shapes but reflecting an industrial and mechanichal approach. Linotype Rory oblique is part of the Take Type Library, selected from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The font was designed by Canadian Tad Biernot with strictly constructed forms. The similarly formed figures seem mechanically created and their light slant gives the impression of strenght and dynamism. Linotype Rory oblique should only be used in the shorter texts of headlines in larger point sizes.

Uplink is decorative upright lettering with heavy calligraphic influences and clear friendly forms. Alternate forms with artificial "tail" connections, swashing their way from one letter across the vertical stroke of the next, add an unusual yet distinctly human detail to the forms that shape the words. Uplink's reserved humor can be a little tolerant of mechanical abuses like shearing or stretching, which makes it ideal for food product packaging design.

Invites is a digital recreation of a 1920’s mechanical script that has never existed. I designed it for my wedding invitations last year and named it in honor of my (ex)wife. Who said it wasn’t her. And she was right. So now it’s called something different. I wanted a sweet, romantic name ... Iris? Taken. Lily? Taken. Iris Lily? Cumbersome. I wanted something short and inviting. Uh ... hmmm.

Pendleton JNL was created from some scant images found on military machinery housed at the Marine Corps Mechanized Museum at Camp Pendleton, California. The photos were provided by Brian Platzer, a volunteer at the base who specializes in equipment restoration. Having used other stencil fonts by Jeff Levine, Brian thought the design of these hand-crafted markings might make another addition to Jeff's vast library of vintage stencil alphabets.

Graffick is a mechanical style created by merging a little traditional type design & typography with a little basic graffiti lettering theory. Tactical is nothing more than a testosterone-laced typeface. Rigid, mechanical and unforgiving. Originally conceived in 2007 while I was working through the early sketches of Ginza, Tactical features hard 45-degree angles and the presence of a curve for curve’s sake is just not there. Complimenting the original is a Stencil variant (inspired by the military, marathon video game, explosion-influenced name) and matching Obliques—altogether creating a sharply coordinating family.

Antique Slabserif JNL is a reinterpretation of Monotype's Modern Antique 26, released in 1909. The name of the typeface is an oxymoron because Modern conflicts with Antique. Despite many critics of the "mechanical" look of the font's design, it has developed a bit of charm with age and the passing of time. Available in both regular and oblique versions, Antique Slabserif JNL can be used as both a text and headline font.

Mechanikschrift, roughly German for “mechanical writing”, is a typeface from Noah Rothschild and Victory Type. The aesthetic of this font is just what its name points towards: machine-like structure with a German flare. Minimalism is often associated with German design, and Mechanikschrift is a minimalist typeface. Furthermore, the designs of the characters, outside of the general theme of squared-off corners and angular appearance, are related to Herbert Bayer’s work at the Bauhaus.

Moron is a distinctive and idiosyncratic display typeface: a winsome-but-nasty, old-and-yet-new drawing of Victorian sans-serif letterforms (with some 1970s sausage fonts thrown in). Moron started life as a sans-serif redrawing of Nylon but developed into a unique typeface with a character all its own. It is based, very loosely, upon Victorian Tuscan and Grotesque type found in the churches and cemeteries of the city of Glasgow. These letterforms originated before the dawn of modernism and at a time when the Arts and Crafts Movement was flourishing. In this age of early mass production and mechanisation, the Victorian ability to balance functionality with ornamentation had fascinating results. The typography of that period displays a unique combination of industrial heft and romantic decoration.

Apres is a clear and comfortable typeface from David Berlow, originally designed for the Palm Pre smart phone. This humanist geometric design projects a friendly and forthright familiarity, without being static or mechanical. This version of the family is part of the Reading Edge series of fonts specifically designed for small text onscreen, having been adjusted to provide more generous proportions and roomier spacing, and having been hinted in TrueType for optimal rendering in low resolution environments.

Rigid Square There is a rule, Octagonal shape and 45 degree cuts. Very geometric shape but designed especially for body text, long sentence such like a mechanical instructions. Capital I and lower l have distinguishable shape. Neo-humanist shape on lowercase b.d.g.p.q is for further smooth readability. Book Country first appeared on a poster for "New York is Book Country". It was inspired by the lettering of Ben Shahn protesting the 1927 execution of Italian radicals Nicolo Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. The letterforms effected an urgent and powerful message. The font includes a derived lower case and an OpenType contextual feature which maintains the rhythm of the uneven baseline when characters repeat to mitigate the stiff, mechanical feeling that occurs when casual lettering is typeset.

Brody’s fonts borrow elements from both Art Deco and non-Western styles. His designs received international recognition for their innovative, computer-oriented style, reaching almost cult status. Menco was inspired by the lettering of engineering, found on blueprints, mechanical drawings, stencils and templates. BlackWhite is a titling typeface created by Ferdinay Duman in 1989 styled after the designs of the late 1980s. Like the name says, the figures emphasizes the play between dark and light. To this end, most inner spaces have been deleted. The constructed outlines of the robust figures draw the attention. In some weights, Duman split the figures horizontally, giving them a unique look. The technical and mechanical BlackWhite is perfect for generous headlines on fliers or in trendy magazines.

Creating Halla was a bit unusual for me since I started out creating the italic version first and that inspired the name Halla, meaning to tilt in Icelandic. It is also a fairly common female name in Iceland. “Halla” is derived from old Norse word “hallr” = 'flat stone, rock' or 'sloping, leaning to one side' Halla is a true italic inspired by handwriting and mechanical type. The combination of Light and Italic makes Halla ideal for advertising, branding, signage, packaging and editorial design.

ITC Belter was designed by Andreu Balius in 1996. Out of a purposely limited form repertoire Balius created a constructed typeface with a cool and technical character. A distinguishing characteristic of this font is the cross at the ends of many strokes. The figures seem to be products of mass production, which heightens the mechanical feel of the font. Belter is meant for point sizes of 10 and larger in headlines and shorter texts and must be set with generous spacing.

TDL Ruha Crown is a decorative, modern and mechanical display typeface and it results from the development of the stencil RUHA. Being the first typeface of the family, sets the basic concepts to be developed further, on each version to come. There is an rigid geometrical connection with the Roman du Roi design approach, since the letterforms are imposed by the constraints of the RUHA ruler. The main typographic proportions are connected with the modern typefaces, like Didot or Bodoni.

-OC Revolt is a variable display font made for the protest graphics of the NYC based T*#@p Brexit era Non-Complicit project who initially made guerrilla type with masking tape applied directly in situ or to silk screens. An uppercase only font there are alternate versions of each character on the lowercase keyboard. Double letter ligatures are used to prevent direct mechanical repetition of letters in the static styles and the Shift axis can be used to make each letter variably unique.

Linotype Grafilone is part of the Take Type Library, which features winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. In creating his font, Bo Berndal combined elements of the constructed and Art Deco styles. Slender and angular, Grafilone is mechanically exact and coolly resesrved. A distinguishing characteristic is the combination of angular and sloping strokes, which give the font a dynamic feel. Grafilone is particular good as a headline font and for initials when combined with constructed sans serif fonts.

Werdet Script is a calligraphic typeface, inspired by the samples of the calligraphy “Batarde” created the first half of the 19th century by the French calligrapher Père Werdet. It has expanded on the original samples, creating a complete typographic family with five weights. The typeface explores the power of Opentype to simulate a manual writing. Thanks to the "contextual alternates” function, ligatures, alternate figures, initials and final forms, are automatically configured to offer an aspect with human decisions to mechanically written texts.

The extremely narrow Robotik was created by the British typeface designer David Quai and appeared with ITC in 1989. The figures are robust and strong and form tightly packed, bar-like lines. The characters' slim, narrow and angular forms suggest mechanical exactness and cool distance. The similarity of the forms are also reminiscent of machinery and the letters form chains of words. The form principle shows parallels with the constructivism of Moscow after the First World War. Robotik is best used for headlines in large point sizes.

Knul is an elegant modern typeface with a subtle mono-line appearance. Balanced engineered geometry with delicate hand touches allows for practical typesetting without complications. Approach is a modern approximation to the early grotesques. An utilitarian low contrast font, a bit mechanic but plenty of character. One of its characteristic elements is a kind of ‘elbow pipe’ shape that is present in many letters like the tail of the a, f, j, t, R, Q or 1 among others.
