After exploring tessellations for several years, I decided to see how many ways I could tessellate puzzle pieces. I began with a square template and used the same asymmetrical shape for all four edges. By flips or rotation each edge could be fitted in four ways. Eventually I discovered that, given this way of forming tiles, there were 15 distinct shapes that tessellate and these shapes can take a total of 96 orientations. (A note in the November 2016 issue of Mathematical Gazette has the proof for the 15 shapes.) This typeface contains those 15 shapes and 96 orientations. A pdf note here shows some of the tilings possible using only one shape in a pattern. An unlimited number of patterns are possible if shapes are mixed. There are two members of the family, a solid style that must have different colors when used and an outline style. They can be used separately or they can be used in layers with the outline style on top of the solid style. For rows to align properly, leading must be the same as point size. (Earlier tessellation fonts from IngrimayneType, the TessieDingies fonts, lack a black or filled version so cannot do colored patterns.)

Linotype Ergo was designed by American Gary Munch, and was a winner in Linotype's Second International Digital Design Contest in 1997. Conceived as a blend of traditional and modern type concepts, it works as a legible text family as well as a lively display or headline font. The word ergo means consequently," but it also comes from the Greek word "ergon" for "work." Consequently, Munch sees this family as full of energy -- an ideal font for working hard to make a point, and able to get it across with friendly vigor. The strokes of the characters are carefully designed to accommodate the tendency of the eye to enlarge horizontals and perceive verticals as lighter. The lowercase forms have open, friendly counters and are enhanced by small quirks, such as the slightly leaning s and the wide t. The deep branching of curves from main strokes helps this humanist sans to be very readable at smaller sizes. Linotype Ergo has four normal-width weights, five condensed weights, and two compressed weights - all with companion Italics! The family also includes a clever "Sketch" font for use in headlines, bringing the total number of font styles to 23. Ergo is available with Greek and Cyrillic and as W2G fonts with Hebrew."

Helsa is a slim and eccentric serif for headings and short texts. It’s a modern interpretation of the narrow Elseviers of the early 20th century. The letterforms are based on Dutch samples, and in the details there are references to both American type catalogs and letters from the foundries of Wolf and Herbeck. Due to the compact proportions of characters and the high contrast of strokes, Helsa doesn’t take up much space in the line and allows you to increase the type size freely, drawing the viewer's attention to the text. The typeface is suitable for branding museums and exhibitions, alternative music bands, independent clothing and perfume brands, and for any topic related to design or history. Helsa’s character set has more than 1600 characters. The design of Cyan was inspired by features found in classic Roman and styles like Trajan and Bodebeck. The characters stay true to the same features as the capitals, resulting in an unusually distinctive style. The Capitals version contains Roman numerals. Cyan's weight is similar to Trajan's but the horizontal strokes are slightly bolder resulting in better legibility for small sizes, especially for lowercase characters. Cyan Sans evolved out of the hugely successful Cyan Serif family. Cyan Sans retains the same geometric Roman proportions with open centers in B,P,R b, d, p . This helps create a thick and thin stroke illusion since the actual strokes don't vary much. There are many subtle details in Cyan Sans that become more interesting in larger sizes. Hydrargyrum is the Latin form of a Greek word meaning "liquid silver" - mercury. The Hydrargyrum typefaces are designed with characteristics both of a metal and a liquid. The basic shapes of the letters are generally rigid and rectangular (particularly in style C), but the forms are enhanced by fluid curves and gently rounded corners. Hydrargyrum is not recommended for use at small sizes or in lengthy passages of text. It performs best in display-sized settings. Hydrargyrum consists of three styles, each in medium and semibold weights with matching obliques. The A style features solid, standard letterforms including the two-story a and g. Style B substitutes the a, g, M, and N (and related glyphs including numero and trademark symbols) for alternate shapes. The third subfamily takes the rectangular theme to an extreme, eliminating as many slanted strokes as possible from the letterforms. This makes some C-style letters ambiguous with one another, such as the U's and V's. As such, the C style is best used carefully even at larger sizes. The Hydrargyrum fonts are style linked within each style subfamily with, for example, Hydrargyrum A Medium as the regular style, Hydrargyrum A Medium Oblique as the italic, Hydrargyrum A SemiBold as the bold option, etc.

The purpose of this monospace font is to display braille in an original although rather steganographic way. Its glyphs are built from a flat hexagon which can be read as 3 rows of 2 vertices (i.e. regular braille glyph grid). The initial design is illustrated by glyphs 'ç' (no dot) and 'û' (6 dots) as shown by poster 5. Glyphs are connected to each other, thus 6 connections for each hexagon (2 on left/right and 4 on top/bottom). In the final design many diagonal segments of the hexagon were removed for esthetical reason. Text is displayed not as a honeycomb but as a lattice instead which mixes hexagons, squares and "irregular convex octagons" (mostly unclosed), the design favored squares over octagons. The whole slightly resembling a PCB. Text can be framed with 3 sets of Frame glyphs (as shown in Poster 4): Octagonal: { €, °, £, µ, §, ¥, ~, ¢ } which can be mixed with Rectangular High Rectangular Low: { è, é, ê, ï, î, à, â, ä } Rectangular High: { Â, ù, Ä, Ê, Ë, ô, õ, ë } which can be mixed with Octagonal NB: When using Frame glyphs, it is advised to show Pilcrow (¶) and Non Breaking Space, which are replaced by empty shapes (e.g. in Microsoft Word, use CTRL+8 or use [¶] button in the ribbon).

About Molhim: I first designed Molhim in 2016 as a personal project to digitalize my handwriting. Molhim 2016 was a static typeface, including two weights, and supported basic Arabic only. Since it was my first typeface to design, it had several issues regarding letterform design and aesthetics, good curve drawing, proportions, font programming, and correct OpenType features. So, in 2019 I started redesigning my handwriting font from the beginning to produce a neat Multi-lingual typeface suitable for diverse purposes. Arabic letterforms are redrawn with a focus on proportions and unity. Molhim Variable characteristics: Supports basic Arabic, and Arabic script-based languages, such as Persian and Urdu. Supports Basic and extended Latin characters. Includes 200+ ligatures and alternate styles for a natural flow of letters. Latin small letters have both separated and connected script forms. The variable font comes in two axes, Weight (wght) and Softness (SOFT): The Weight axis ranges from thin to bold, while Softness changes the stroke's cap from a round cap to a sharp projecting cap. Although I see the new Molhim Variable as a different typeface, I decided to keep the name 'Molhim' for the new typeface with the addition of 'Variable'. Molhim is an Arabic word that means 'inspiring'; this is how I hope people would perceive my handwriting.

Introducing Promenade – a calligraphic serif that started on paper with a flat nib pen (see the 6th image), and blossomed into a full serif with italics. At its core, this font is just... beautiful. It's elegant, it's crisp, it's delicate, but can still hold its own. As I was creating the graphics, I just couldn't get over the flow of the letters – especially the italic. It's got class, but also isn't afraid to rock a pair of Doc Marten's. Funny enough, Jen from Tonic (they make beautiful websites) saw a preview of this font and said, "I'd take that font to prom." Which of course spurred a conversation about how this font would take a Mercedes G-Series instead of a limo, and wear Doc Marten's instead of heels, but still wear the most gorgeous dress, and that is 100% Promenade (and inspo for the name – thanks, Jen!). I've also been loving combining the regular and italic, especially for logos (see the "Friendfolk" logo) One thing to note about Promenade is the letter spacing. It was spaced for clean reading and intentional balance, so I recommend setting the spacing a little tighter if you want to create the display look found in many of the logo mockups(around -20 to -40 should do!).

Fazeta Sans is a perfect companion to serif typeface Fazeta. Two light weights were added, so the complete typeface consist of 14 fonts (7 weights + matching italics). The fine gradation lets you choose perfect weight for any type of project. Every font have 1140 glyphs – just like the serif version and contains the same features, so use and combining of whole typeface is very comfortable. Also fixed kerning allows better comfort for eyes by reading and shortens the length of the text. I tried to preserve sharp and cold impression from serif version, but some straight lines had to be curved due to the natural limitation of sans typefaces (for example the upper arch of “f” is shaped more smooth). However it keeps extremely open form. A little playfulness was left at the end of letters “k, K, and R”, but if you want, this can be eliminated by using a rigorous SS01 feature. Serifs were here transformed into a small yaw from main stroke and so enlive the monotony of sans kind of types. Also slight cutting the top of the letters helping to surprisingly vivid final impression. Fazeta Sans is therefore suitable for wide range of type sizes – from small marginalies to huge poster sizes. To see more please check the PDF specimen.

Preto is an extensive type family, which explores the function of serifs on readability and legibility. Preto consist of three subfamilies: Sans, Semi and Serif. Preto is designed for multilingual typesetting. All of the subfamilies have equal gray value but different texture which can be use to differentiate languages. Preto sub-families have two text weights and two bold styles (Regular -> Bold, Medium -> Black). Every weight has a companion Italic style as well. The serif version has been designed to work best at small point sizes (around 8, 9 points). You will not achieve calm, boring or invisible look of your text with Preto Serif. Its long, spiky and sharp serifs contribute to give the typeface a distinct and energetic character. It is very suitable for magazines, corporate identity, brochures or other print materials where a typeface for continuous reading is required. The ligatures in Preto Serif are very special. You can set them in different tracking values and spacing will increase/decrease consistently in the ligatures as well. Alternative characters in the font files allow you to change the feeling of the text from typical to more special (J, Q, g , &). Each font contains a full set of small caps and many alternative characters for complex typesetting.

Ralf Herrmann, the designer of Wayfinding Sans, started this project with extensive field studies, driving tens of thousands of miles to explore the legibility of road signage typefaces in dozens of countries around the world. After building his own theoretical framework of relevant legibility parameters, the design process used a unique custom real-time simulation software, which could simulate difficult reading conditions (distance, fog, halation, positive/negative contrast) while the letters were actually being designed. This process made it possible to optimize even the tiniest details of each letter for maximum legibility. Being made specifically for wayfinding purposes, this type family does not compromise on any aspect of legibility — and yet, the typeface is a beautiful, clean and modern sans serif. With its broad language support and the large number of available styles it is perfectly suitable for any possible signage project anywhere in the world. In an independent empirical study at the University of Applied Sciences “htw” in Berlin different typefaces were recently tested when used on signs and Wayfinding Sans Pro was the winner in all conducted tests, being significantly more legible and therefore superior to all other styles of the tested typefaces. Metal Cry is a font family that was inspired by countless hours spent playing video games, watching old movies or reading comic books. And even more hours closely analysing the design of all these things. The art of creating beautiful letters has slowly declined with the rise of the digital age and its solid-colour, 2D fonts. And most of the time, the care given to typography in cultural products just isn't what it used to be anymore. A complete figurative alphabet was published by one Peter Flotner (ca. 1485-1546) in 1534. In Flotner’s alphabet, naked or nearly-naked figures are posed singly or disposed in pairs to form the various letters. Unlike de Grassi’s alphabet, we find only human figures here, no other animals. And unlike Tory’s illustrations, these letters seem an end in themselves, rather than the means of demonstrating a design strategy. Flotner’s alphabet was imitated by other engravers. The letters G and N are reproduced from an alphabet published by one Martin Weygel in Bavaria in 1560. Peter Flötner , c.1485-1546, German medalist and artisan, possibly Swiss by birth. He was active in decorative sculpture, wood carving, and other crafts, making medals and plaques and furnishing designs of classical motifs for silversmiths. He was in Nuremberg by 1522 and did most of his work there, although he made two trips to Italy. Flötner is now regarded as a pioneer of the German Renaissance. His Kunstbuch was published in 1549. In the Metropolitan Museum are five of his bronze plaques illustrating biblical episodes. FF Signa is a typically Danish typeface, rooted in architectural lettering rather than book typography. Philadelphian is a revival of a MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan font from 1867 by the same name. The regular version with shadow outline was the only style that was offered in 1867. We've taken the original design further by creating two additional weights of medium and bold plus plain black versions. The medium and bold weights are unique because only the horizontal strokes increase in thickness while the vertical strokes remain the same in each weight. Philadelphian Nite is the plain black version of this font family, Nite is the casual spelling of the word Night meaning dark or black. Between geometry & shapes inspired by nature, in 4 fonts Audace was born as a response to a simple brief: how to visually express human interaction and technology with abstract forms? The starting point is a humanistic sanserif, to which are added external references: design pieces, furniture, buildings. Architects shape our world with the intention to reconnect nature, human and address a perfect functionality. Not so far to typeface design which combines a personal vision and ensures good legibility in a certain context. Audace — like the works of those artists, designers, architects — is clearly influenced by the tension of the line, the play with negative space, the dynamics, the surprise, the nature that will influence the shapes of the letters. So if a v is asymmetrical, and the y based on similar asymmetry but in reverse, these two shapes help to distinguish from one to the other. This is a consequence of the influence of forms from design and art in the design of the Audace. And this small example illustrates the confrontations of the designer’s influences: the search for the most unique shapes, but without compromising on function: to be read, to be legible, even at very small size in the worst conditions.
