The sources of inspiration for the Atyp typeface are spread out widely both stylistically and chronologically. The basic proportions of the uppercase refer to the elementary geometric constructions of the Bauhaus. The subtle details in the drawing of the characters and the microscopic adjustments, which evoke the illusion of uniformity and mechanical purity, pay homage to the rationalism of the typefaces popular in the International Style. The increased contrast of the joints of the bowls and shoulders in the Display weight, which in certain diagonal curves transition into almost deconstructive permutations. For a change these take delight in doing things on purpose, teasing readability and breaking the rules of the new millennium's typography. Atyp was created by adapting a typeface originally made for a commercial television station. The potential of the neutral grotesque, proven by its excellent readability on screens, gave the impetus for its preparation into an extremely wide character set. Coherence across all eight key masters lays the groundwork ideally for using the variable font format. Bauhaus is a style of art that was born in Weimar Germany in the early part of the 20th century. The font that bears the bauhaus name was constructed in accordance with this style by making use of spheres and squares with little or no added flourishes. Since this typeface was already minimalistic in appearance, it was difficult to produce a similarly styled font. So I went back to bauhaus’ architectural roots for inspiration. The result contains a more detailed composition, but is still focused on the basic aesthetics that continue to make bauhaus a popular art form. Why Baka Expert? There’s actually a simple answer. The original Baka was done as an experiment of sorts. I wanted to quickly capture a rough, frenetic handwriting style that broke normal conventions. Commercially, it was successful, received some accolades ... but I wasn’t completely satisfied, so I went back to the master art and the lettering explorations and produced Baka Too. This addressed some of the line items I wanted to refine in Baka. I liked it. Each font has been out for a few years now, and I have seen them in use. I’m very critical of my work, and I could still see things—modulations of strokes, angle of the nib, ink swell, and so on—that I wanted to change, refine, and reorder. For me, it is typographic indulgence, but I wanted to take this handwriting ‘font’ and turn it into a robust ‘typeface.’ So I did just that and a bit more by adding back more of my initial flourish concepts; attaining tighter, consistent control of the modulation; optimizing points; adding titling options; and expanding the character language set. Baka and Baka Too had to exist to produce this entirely new re-envisioning of an old friend ... and they all play well together :)

The most exciting new feature of DynaGotesk is the Vintage Italics stylistic set, which activates the decorative forms. It includes the looped "w", curved ascenders and descenders of many lowercase letters. These can significantly change the feel of a poster or invitation. DynaGrotesk may look like a revival of an old typeface, but it is not. It uses only some historical reminiscences, sharp edges and curved shapes, but it’s completely original design aimed at ease of use. The bigger the size, the more evident and pronounced are the spicy details. In smaller and even smallest sizes it’s appearance is qieter, very well suited even for long portions of text. DynaGrotesk was created in 1995 with the use of Multiple Master interpolation. But the MM fonts never achieved the desired application in industry, so designers returned back to single fonts. Over the following decades, the font was modified several times as an old house, and the present re-animation includes the Variable font format. Since its first release in the mid-nineties, it is widely used in all areas of graphic industry from small publishing to international corporate identity. The warm character of DynaGrotesk derives from early sans-serif typefaces, those which appeared before Helvetica. It can be tricky to find typefaces that can convey the feeling of personal warmth that comes from a handwritten note, custom brandings, special series of products, especially as we type more and more and write with a pen or pencil less and less. To add some more of that warmth to a font, I’ve made Ronet. A duo font based on the my handwriting. Double eponymous styles of the font —Ronet and Ronet Alternative— each have a unique flavor with its own rhythm and character. These fonts just ooze Christmas and holiday spirit from every curve of every letter! If Kingthings Willowless Pro is a Christmas font, well... then Kingthings Willow Pro is a Christmas tree complete with decorations and lights! This font is sooooo ornamented - but still quite readable. I have cleaned up all the outlines, redesigned the F (which looked more like a J), tweaked some more letters and then expanded the font with the usual multilingual glyphs. I loved this font when I first saw it, but was very nervous that it would be difficult to design the accents - but it was a breeze! It has been one of the most enjoyable fonts to rework so far. I loved this monster font the second I saw it - it reminded me of Franquins Idées Noires... Reworking it and adding the missing glyphs and diacritics was quite time-consuming - but a lot of fun! Lots of details. The Lupineless variant is Lupine with eyes, decorations and stray hairs removed - which leaves just a very usable fuzzy font for your monster-related headline. The Palatino™ typeface was first designed over 50 years ago by Hermann Zapf, and is probably the most universally admired and used of his type designs. In 1950, it was punchcut in metal by August Rosenberger at D. Stempel AG typefoundry in Frankfurt am Main, and then adapted for Linotype machine composition. Zapf optimized Palatino's design for legibility by giving it open counters and carefully weighted strokes, producing a typeface that was legible even on the inferior paper of the post-World War II period. The font was named after Giambattista Palatino, a master of calligraphy from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Palatino is a typeface based on classical Italian Renaissance forms. It has become a modern classic in itself, and is popular among professional graphic designers and amateurs alike. Palatino works well for both text and display typography. The new Palatino™ Linotype typefaces are OpenType format fonts, which include many newly designed characters in four large character sets; including extensive support for the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets, as well as for Central European and many other languages. Early in my career as a graphic designer I purchased a book on Japanese packaging. With it, I came to notice that Japanese characters used mostly a modicum of strokes. This font was my attempt at trying to balance the familiarity of a Latin alphabet with the unfamiliarity of Kanji and Kana. It was more of a typographical challenge than usual; since going too much in either direction would defeat the purpose. I would like to think that, for the most part, I got the balance right. Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass. I designed Conium to be a sister font to Nightshade. It was meant to have the appearance of the hemlock plant without being too derivative; it’s thin drooping stems conjure images of Hamlet’s mad Ophilia clutching sickly weeds while thinking them to be flowers. It also projects the appearance of an ice cold, wrought iron, cemetery gate. The sort that one might pass on a damp overcast day. A fitting compliment to an Edward Gorey illustration from top, right down to the frigid ground from which it sprang. Despeinada, which means "uncombed" in Spanish, is a loose script, perfect for when you want to convey informality. It'll look good in a long text, or when a few rough and spontaneous word are needed... Being a packaging designer, my faces are mostly oriented toward that sector, although they won't look in any way out of place in the editorial world or in advertising, for example. This face was generated in the University of Barcelona Master of Typography, in 2010, where I dictated the “Practicum” It's a very versatile design that can be used in small sizes or enlarged as needed. It won't deceive you! I think that this particular face is halfway between Mistral and Zapfino: rough but clean at the same time. None of its glyphs follow any order, nor do their weights... In short, if you start writing with Despeinada you won't want to stop.

The Sabon® Georgian design translates the original Sabon typeface into Georgian language. Its old style Latin-based design traits and proportions have been carefully and beautifully interpreted as Georgian script characters. In the early 1960s, a group of German master printers wanted a typeface family which would provide them with consistent and predictable results, whether it was used as machine or hand-set composition. They approached one of Germany’s most distinguished type designers, Jan Tschichold, to undertake the design task. The end result of the design commission is a typographic tour de force, and the face that establishes Tschichold’s reputation as a type designer. The completed design, released in 1966, not only solved the imposed design problem of the early 1960s, it is also an exceptionally beautiful and useful digital design. Shàngó is CastleType’s beautifully-rendered interpretation of Professor F.H.E. Schneidler's elegant titling typeface released in 1936 with the name 'Schneidler-Mediaeval mit Initialen'. This latter design is usually referred to as Schneidler Initials. Although early on Medium and Bold weights were added to the somewhat delicate design of Shàngó, it seemed there were other possibilities that might be useful for display use. So, for the last couple of years I have been working on and off on a monoline version of Shàngó. This new design maintains the classic letterforms of the original, but its relatively even strokes gives it a more solid appearance, making it useful where a more modern, masculine look is needed. This new family is called Shango Gothic and is available in four weights: Regular, Medium, Bold, and Extra Bold. Shàngó Gothic is a member of the extended Shàngó family (Classic, Chiseled, Sans, Gothic).
