The ITC Stone Sans II typeface family is new from the drawing board up. Sumner Stone, who designed the original faces in 1988, recently collaborated with Delve Withrington and Jim Wasco of Monotype Imaging to update the family of faces that bears his name. Sumner was the lead designer and project director for the full-blown reworking – and his own greatest critic. The collaborative design effort began as a relatively simple upgrade to the ITC Stone Sans family. As so often happens, however, the upgrade proved to be not so simple, and grew into a major design undertaking. “My initial intent,” recalls Sumner, “was to provide ITC Stone Sans with even greater versatility. I planned to add an additional weight, maybe two, and to give the family some condensed designs.” As Sumner began to look more closely at his twenty-year-old typeface, he decided that it would benefit from more extensive design improvements. “I found myself making numerous refinements to character shapes and proportions,” says Sumner. “The project scope expanded dramatically, and I’m pleased with the final result. The redesign has improved both the legibility and the overall appearance of the face.” The original ITC Stone Sans is part of the ITC Stone super family, along with ITC Stone Serif and ITC Stone Informal. In 2005 ITC Stone Humanist joined the family. All of these designs have always offered the same three weights: Medium, Semibold, and Bold – each with an italic counterpart. Over time, Stone Sans has emerged as the godfather of the family, a powerful design used for everything from fine books, annual reports and corporate identity programs, to restaurant menus, movie credits and advertising campaigns. ITC Stone Sans, however, lacked one attribute of many sans serif families: a large range of widths and weights. “These fonts had enjoyed great popularity for many years – during which graphic designers repeatedly asked for more weights and condensed designs in the family,” says Sumner. “Their comments were the impetus.” ITC Stone Sans II includes six weights ranging from an elegant Light to a commanding Extra Bold. An italic counterpart and suite of condensed designs complements every weight. In all, the new family encompasses 24 typefaces. Toronto Gothic was developed from a headline in a 1920s issue of the Toronto Star. In a previous life, it was probably Condensed Titling Gothic #11, but in this form its rounded corners and irregular lines are meant to make it look worn from years of use.

Sherwood is a reproduction of an unusually small wood type font from England, dating from the last years of the 18th century. Somewhat reminiscent of Caslon Old Face. The original wood type is used at Sherwood Letterpress and can be seen on the Sherwood home page.

Australis is a hybrid roman font that won first prize in the Morisawa International Type Design Competition in 2002. After 10 years the family is finally complete and its release coincides with the reopening of the competition in 2012, in Japan. Designed by Francisco Gálvez Pizarro.

This came from a shop near Munich, Germany, and was a very poor proof with no font name on it. Never did identify it. When we cleaned it up, we liked it pretty well. We think it is typical of some early twentieth century art nouveau fonts.

Ornella is a very typical art nouveau typeface that perfectly fits into the series of URW++ Jugendstil fonts released in the last couple of years. Ornella was reworked, redesigned, completed and digitally remastered by Ralph M. Unger for URW++, based on specimen taken from old font catalogues.

A movie poster for the 1952 Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis comedy “Sailor Beware” had the text rendered in a casual style of brush lettering similar to that found on store show cards. This inspired Show Card Brush JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A small x-height typeface, originating with engravers near the start of the twentieth century, appearing in type in the 1923 ATF specimen.

Most of the letter keys are from animal drawings done by a six or eight year old child who has now grown up.

A vintage booklet from the Japan Tourist Bureau entitled "How to See Matsushima and Environs" had the title hand lettered in the Art Deco style which is the basis for Travel Brochure JNL. For those who prefer a more traditional 'E', it is located on the broken bar keystroke.

Vivian Script was designed from the study of typeface references like Doyald Young. It has optical adjustment in the details and funny contrasts to get an amazing result. It can used to be applied on different commercial topics like street wear, food and traveling for tourism. This is Vivian Script, the love of my life.

Stonecrop is a font unified by bold, imposing lines as well as its use of rounded rectangles as the central stylistic shape. Stonecrop loosely conforms to the monospaced font style, with near-equal widths for all letters and numbers (but not all symbols/punctuation), however it does incorporate kerning for all types of glyphs where appropriate to aid in legibility. A perfect font for usages that demand consistency and precision, while still maintaining a quirky and stylized handwritten effect.

Rustic Stamp presents gritty lettering produced by unknown and ancient mechanical means. Perhaps it was even meticulously hand-crafted. The effect is a near-magical quality laid over Rustic Stamp's jittery baseline, giving this font a unique character intensity. That experience left a mark on me that over the years mixed up with my practice as a type designer. “Caligrafía Inglesa” is, basically, the spanish translation for the copperplate calligraphic style. This was the initial idea that led the spirit of the project, but from the beginning it started to develop a typographic personality of its own. The new Inglesa font comes in 6 weights –from a skinny monolinear to an elegant black– with a companion set of roman caps. Rudolf Koch’s personal form of the geometric sanserif started at the Bauhaus in 1926; this typeface was designed for Klingspor in the following year.

Sports Wave is a specialty font that can be used for sports-themed projects. Previously available as a free version with only the pictograms, Sports Wave has been a popular download. Now we offer you the added usability of a full and extended character set. Some glyphs have been provided to extend the height of the shorter “banner” glyphs. These glyphs are negatively kerned and appear near the end of the set.

For years, the print ads for the Hickok Jewelry Company [renowned for their line of men's belts, suspenders, wallets, cufflinks, etc.] featured its name and related main line ad copy hand-lettered in a condensed monoline with Art Deco styling. This has been reproduced in Fashionable JNL, available in both regular and oblique versions. For those of you who are wondering: yes, the founder of the company was a distant relative of "Wild Bill" Hickok.

Spirodelic is a funky pop-art font with a sassy vintage vibe. This all-capitals design incorporates coiled spirals into the letters, and will add a lot of swirly psychedelic fun to your designs. It's great for retro seventies looks of course, but really also works well on anything modern that needs a loose and lighthearted touch, like kids books, toy packaging, flavored drinks, clothing lines, surf gear, logos... you name it.

Bold Fashion is a heavy slab-serif font of the disco era. Its funk-style design, coupled with soft, rounded serifs, embodies the soul of retro, bringing forth memories of neon lights, bell-bottoms, and roller discos. Each letter is profoundly heavy, yet they prance with a bouncy, comfy rhythm, akin to catchy 70s beats. The swashes adorning the uppercase letters add flair, reminiscent of iconic burger joint signs and groovy vinyl covers.

Wroxeter is Greater Albion Typefounders' customary Black Letter release for Christmas 2013. It's a typeface family for all times of year though, a good clear traditional black letter re-creation offered in a family of four typeface:- regular, wrought (a hand-tooled look a la Mr F Goudy), oblique and narrow forms. The tradition of typefounders' black letter revivals which don't over-burden themselves with historical precedent continues in this highly refined and polished family.

This contrast serif typeface is good for display use. Bandera Display Cyrillic has six weights with original italics. It catches attention in headlines of posters and magazines. It works well with Bandera Cyrillic (slab serif), Osnova Cyrillic (sans serif) and Bandera Text Cyrillic (serif) fonts. Bandera is Spanish for 'flag'. And Bandera is a symbol of Ukrainian fighting for freedom for many years.

Aranjuez is the latest Koziupa and Paul adventure. This time, they max out on calligraphic art deco, then add a healthy dose of the thick-and-thin mantra that's been so trendy for quite a few years now. The result is neo-psychedelia in an upright cross-breed of pseudo-wood deco and ornamental calligraphy, complete with alternates, swashes, endings, playful contrast treatments, and even background possibilities. This font is quite expressive, and its elegance is meant to be shown prominently. So use it for packaging, book covers, or wherever the message needs to be delivered clearly and with a precisely controlled touch of class.

Stay Gold Script is a highly usable, powerful typeface. Perfect for everything from street wear brand to wedding invitations, sports team logos to band logos. Use it however you see fit. Just one thing - it’s not designed for all-caps settings.

A freeform linking script that uses OpenType programming to replace beginning and ending characters with uniquely designed variants. Also includes ligatures and an extended t-bar carefully designed to not collide with ascenders. (Note: Please view the image above for correct versions of the end and beginning letters, as they will appear in Indesign, Illustrator, etc. The Myfonts previews below are not Opentype savvy, and so these specially designed versions do not substitute themselves.)

Modesto Initials had existed as a single font for several years. I recently added a fill font to put color in the Inlines. The Inline font still works by itself. The Fill font works alone too, as an ultra Modesto on steroids. They work best together. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. In 2014 seven new Italic fonts and two Chromatic families were added. There is a downloadable MODESTO USER MANUAL PDF in the Gallery section for this family.

Years ago, by happenstance, designers Nancy Mazzei and Brian Kelly found an old decrepit typewriter in an abandoned lot with tall grass in Brooklyn. They kept it around their apartment for two years. Then one day they decided that it was time to move and they planned to throw the old typewriter away. But it was so beautiful they wanted to keep at least a part of it. So they decided on keeping the keys. They kept the keys in a brown bag until one fine day the keys were introduced to a camera. It was a match made in heaven that resulted in some beautiful quirky images of typewriter keys. These images were the inspiration for Backspacer. They were scanned, traced and turned into a working typeface by Zuzana Licko.
