A collaboration based on lettering by Vermont illustrator/artist Mary Trafton and brought to typographic life by Charles Gibbons, the Full Moon Suite is a collection of casual typefaces called after folk names for full moons. A winner of the TDC2 2003 Type Design Competition. Family members include: Falling Leaves, Rustling Branches, Black Cherry, Black Cherry Alternate, Black Cherry Ligatures and Black Cherry Doubles.

A vintage matchbook advertising the New York Liquor Mart – oddly enough, located in Chicago, Illinois – featured a pen and ink line drawing of the store’s exterior. The Art Deco lettering on the mansard was portrayed with a straight left shadow (as opposed to drop cast or extruded), making for an interesting multi-line typeface design. This is now digitally available as Packaged Goods JNL.

Fragment Pro is a part of a larger OpenType font family (see also Fragment Pro Inline). It is an elegant, soft and decorative typeface built on classical proportions. Its outlines have been carefuly crafted with a high attention to detail, so it could be used even at very large sizes. Fragment Pro is derived from the separately sold layered Fragment Pro Inline, however it has been significantly optimized for standalone use. Fragment has been conceived to be used as a display typeface in publications, titles, logotypes etc., but it is surprisingly legible even in smaller print sizes. Thanks to its strictly onefold oulines, Fragment can be also used as a stencil typeface. The history of Able’s connection with the Harry Potter phenomenon is really up in the air. It’s a catch-22 in this business - you either promote your own work and negotiate expensive exclusive licenses, or you work with a promoter and sell your designs to anyone and everyone. It could have been an in-house designer at Rowling’s publisher, Scholastic, or a freelancer who proposed Able for the headings and such. The responsible party licensed it from T26, and JK Rowling’s storytelling made it a star. (I suppose it’s ironic that there’s a whole lot of unwritten history in the typography business.) Able’s rise to fame really is a classic love story between reading and type design. If the books weren’t so popular, Able might still be waiting for some Mexican fast food chain to pick it up for packaging design. The movie deal certainly made the font all the more recognizable, what with its merchandising campaign. Popularity can also cripple a great decorative face. It’s always being recognized as “The Harry Potter Font.” It might just have to wait a few decades for the Potter phenomenon to subside to be freed from the “Chamber of Pigeonholed Fonts.” In the meantime, I’m sure that a lot of fledgling graphic design apprentices are reading their new Potter books, being charmed by the idea of type design when they’re not turning the pages too fast to notice.

At home, we don’t drink soft drinks at all. Maybe sometimes, when one of the kids has a birthday party, but we normally don’t have a stash of the stuff. We have cordial, or, as wel call it in Holland: limonadesiroop (‘Lemonade Syrup’). There you go, another font name xplained! Today Syrup was made with a marker pen and a lot of paper! It comes with a frizzy, sticky goodness to give your designs that extra kick.

Steve Jackaman has refined and optimized Jolly Roger for digital release. The original design was created in 1970 by the legendary American type designer Phil Martin, founder and creator of the Alphabet Innovations and TypeSpectra type collections. This growing family of friendly faces is based on the typeface Bravour, designed in 1913 by Martin Jacoby-Boy for the D. Stempel AG foundry in Frankfurt am Main. Louise font was based on the art of Louise Marie (lou) Loeber, a Dutch painter. She was born in Amsterdam in 1894 and flirted with several styles like De Stijl, Cubism and Bauhaus.
