There is no doubt that the 1941 version of “The Maltese Falcon” was superior to the prior two attempts by Warner Brothers at filming Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel. Sam Spade was perfectly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, and the supporting cast of Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr. rounded out the main players in a great suspense film that is considered to be the first (if not one of the first) of the film noir genre. The title cards for the production and cast credits were hand-lettered in a spurred serif type style strongly reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, so instead of naming the digital version with some “tough guy detective” moniker, it was decided that Detective Client JNL was more appropriate. After all, this is a reasonably attractive font, and in this kind of film it’s usually the “attractive damsel in distress” [be she the victim or the actual perpetrator] that gets the story rolling… Detective Client JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Mayonez is a typeface with rational structure and axis but softened with rounded contours and cupped serifs, getting as result a balance between seriousness and friendliness. The shapes have a soft appearance but without lacking definition. A more fluid structure influenced by calligraphy is proposed for the italic variants, in this case the uppercase letters adopted a simplified semiserif structure that works better with the lowercase letters. Also the figures are very different from the roman version and follow more faithfully the italic style. In an attempt to give Cyrillic lowercase romans a fresh look, symmetrical serifs inherited from the versal tendency are mostly avoided thus getting simpler structures closer to the latin forms. This type is good for commercial and editorial uses like advertising, packaging and pages with showy headlines where a warm touch wants to be given. The character set includes a group of figures and currency symbols with standard height and another suited to match better with lowercase letters. Mayonez was selected to be part of the Communication Arts Typography annual in 2015.

Bold, black and square. But was first drawn as a logotype for the magazine "BUT – Bilder und Texte" (pictures and texts) which was published by an experimentally-oriented non-commercial initiative. In consideration of the unusual dimensions of the magazine (6 x 14 cm / 2,4 x 5,5 inch), I decided to fill as much space as possible with the body of type. This formal idea refers to the meaning of the title by blurring the border between legible letters and abstract shapes. Because of its origin, But is ideal for short messages in headline point size. Despite its blocky shapes, But creates a friendly atmosphere. The details are as playful as the restrictions that are given by the concept allow them to be. Punctuation marks and other special characters contrast the boldness of the design since they are matching the thin parts of upper- and lowercase letters. Khatt tries to mimic the concept behind the meaning of the Arabic word Khatt: a straight horizontal line. The word Khatt is also the word for calligraphy in the Arabic language. Even though Khatt is a cursive style font it offers clearly distinguished and visually unified letter shapes in every position of a word. Khatt supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with five weights, regular, medium, bold, light, and ultra-light. Each weight has normal and left-slanted “italic” styles. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style and utilizes varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter in an Arabic text. Khatt includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Katts’s soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are positioned with most of them appearing on similar lower or upper positions to emphasize they are not part of letters.

Neue Jugend is an art nouveau typeface orientated on letter shapes of original Jugendstil fonts. The shapes are reduced to a straight modern look, so one could say it is the 21st century art nouveau. Neue Jugend supports all latin languages and their is a little ligature to bring P and Y closer together, if wanted. It is an uppercase typeface, so it is suggested to be used in headlines. I had to work with only a couple of glyphs ('Thermal Badehaus' to be exact) and tried to capture their beauty in the remaining glyphs. The result is a font called Badehaus (Bath House in German). It is a bold, all caps typeface, with some unique glyphs.

For decades, the Greenwich Village area of New York was a home for artists, poets, writers and free-thinkers of their time who were labeled "Bohemians" because of their non-conformist approach to life and the arts. Greenwich Village JNL is an Art Nouveau-influenced typeface with a Bohemian approach in its double crossbars on the A and H; all the while being a nice example of hand lettering found on a vintage piece of sheet music.

Fucha is a typography inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, and by the lettering of Alphonse Mucha's posters. Fucha is a decorative display font in the Art Nouveau style that originated over a century ago. The style showcases in its elaborate, lightweight curves a bold approach to organic lines and luxurious decor. A complete repertoire of Latin Extended-A characters is contained in the font. Periodical JNL is based on one the many stylized titles from the cover of the 1920s Spanish magazine "Nuevo Mundo" (New World). Each cover displayed a beautiful piece of period artwork along with the magazine's name in different lettering styles of the time (Art Nouveau and early Art Deco). The original design features an "engraved" look and now has an oblique counterpart. Also available are solid versions (without the inside lines) in both regular and oblique styles.

A font by Christian Acker (2003), based upon the practice of the Americana folk art tradition of tattoo design.
