Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1925, FontHaus's 1995 revival is based on a design named "Novelty Broadway". Characters were referenced from "Commercial Art of Show Card Lettering" by James Eisenberg, published by D. Van Nostrand Company in 1945. This Broadway is classic Broadway but with some charming differences such as a slanted lower case "f" a remarkable lower case "g" and a high-waisted upper case case "R", as only a few examples. It was named "Novelty" because the alphabet incorporated a concave design feature in the tops and bottoms of each letter. These differences allow this version to possess much more personality than that of all other Broadway designs on the market. It looks almost hand brushed, has soft edges and is no where near as sterile looking as all the other digital versions. It feels very 1925!

For decades, cereal companies have included premiums [promotional gifts] inside their packages, printed on the cartons or to send for with a special coupon and redemption instructions. During the 1940s, Pep cereal [a long-discontinued Kellogg's brand] offered a series of water-applied decals within its boxes. Most likely made by the Meyercord Company (one of America's largest transfer decal manufacturers at the time), one decal in particular had an alphabet in gold letters with black outlines. (One can only presume the marketing strategy was to have kids bug their parents to buy more Pep cereal if the child needed more than one letter of the alphabet for his or her initials!) The "Tichy" typeface is intended for use in titles, headlines and in short text blocks, like citates. However, the typeface is legible even in larger text blocks. It's strong appeal allows the typeface's usage mixed with other graphic elements of the layout without compromising it's readability and it's presence. The typeface's simple initial module (double braked at 135 degrees straight line), the strict rules of forming the letters lead to an unique typeface - masculine, strong and still legible. The Cyrillic glyphs are influenced by the work of the great Bulgarian typographers Boris Angelushev, Vassil Yonchev and Alexander Poplilov, who developed Cyrillic further in 60-s and 70-s of the XX century. Western, East European, Cyrillic, Baltic and Turkish codepages are supported. The font file contains all the basic ligatures, alternate glyphs and kern pairs. It can be used both on Windows and MacOS based computers. The history of "Tichy" typeface began many years ago with a project for logotype design for a small company. It was a kind of designer's game to try making some letters just using one single module. Development of the other glyphs of the latin alphabet was for many years a mandatory exercise for the young colleagues in our studio. Suddenly we realized that this project matured and creation of a new typeface started.

Here’s a design inspired by the work of Dave West and infused with a plethora of pleasingly plump letterforms, with swashes reminiscent of 60s and 70s types. But here’s the twist: where you might typically expect to find ball terminals, you'll experience some sensuous curls; and some playful letterforms such as lowercase h, k, m, and n, may even call to mind that groovy look of ’60s bell-bottoms. Spread across its capitals and lowercase are swash variants for beginning, middle and ending letterforms —candy for your eyes. Petals BF is where Didone style happily marries the organic and curvaceous forms of Art Nouveau. Strange I know, but so is a duckbill platypus —and somehow they all seem to work surprisingly well.
