MVB Gryphius is a digitization of uncommon type from an era normally associated with the work of Nicolas Jenson. Produced by Otto Trace, the fonts come from types used by Sebastian Gryphius in Lyon in the early 16th century. The italic appears in a book from 1524 and the roman and small caps appear with the same italic in another book printed by Gryphius in 1541. On February 15, 1926, the Display Material Company of St. Paul Minnesota patented a sign making outfit consisting of a series of stencils in various sizes and styles, paints, brushes, instructions for use and all stored inside a convenient wooden case. Sold to any business in need of making many signs at low cost, this versatile stencil set enabled many a merchant to produce posters, show cards and price tags for pennies over what a commercial sign shop would charge. One of the most enduring type styles of the Art Deco era is Huxley Vertical. Its clean lines and stylish appeal have transcended changing times and tastes. Many typefaces have been inspired by the original, including the model used to create this font. The design was found in the book "Lettering and Alphabets", first published in 1946 by J. Albert Cavanagh. By re-drawing it from scratch, the missing numerals, punctuation, special characters and accents were added. Janice is a revival and expansion of a 1960s Mecanorma film type called Putty Bold. It’s thick, flowing, happy and oozes psychedelia. Linotype Not Painted is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font from German designer Robert Bucan grabs attention immediately. The forms are made up of multiple layers. The upper case’ alphabet forms, numerals and punctuation are two different styles of the same character, one over the other, and the lower case’ letters are composed of the lower case and upper case of the same letter superimposed. Malaguena Stencil JNL was derived from hand lettering found on an Art Deco-era piece of vintage sheet music for this familiar tune. According to Wikipedia: “Malagueña is the feminine form of the Spanish language adjective malagueño/ malagueña, ‘pertaining to Málaga’, a Spanish port city.” Additionally: "Malagueña", is a song by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona; written in 1928 it was originally the sixth movement of Lecuona's Suite Andalucia, to which he added lyrics in Spanish. The song has since become a popular, jazz, marching band, and drum corps standard and has been provided with lyrics in several languages.

Sheet music at the beginning of the 20th Century reflects both the musical and artistic tastes of the times in often colorful ways. It seemed to be a favorite thing amongst songwriters of that era to come up with very wordy song titles. The cover of the sheet music for 1907’s “Every Little Bit Added to What You’ve Got Makes Just A Little Bit More” checks in at fourteen words, but the hand lettered title (done in an Art Nouveau style) made it worthy of transposition into a digital type face.
