“A couple of years ago, when I was designing a package for a marmalade range, I started having a go at creating a typeface that would suit the package I had in mind. The whole process was intensely appealing to me: from merely using typefaces as an intricate part of my work as an art director, I started exploring the function of each and every element that a typeface consists of. The two things on my mind in designing a typeface for a marmalade brand were firstly, that I wanted it to have a hand-written feel, so as to exude that old-fashioned, homemade quality, and secondly, that it ought to have a certain sweetness and gentleness that would match the product. However, PF Scandal managed to outgrow its original inspiration. As I continued working on it, I toned down some of its elements to make it more versatile. And so, PF Scandal evolved into a typeface that has a contemporary, and yet handwritten look, which makes it suitable for a wide range of uses. The ‘Pro’ version comes with the full array of European characters including Latin, Greek and Cyrillic as well as 120 matching pictograms". -A.S.

When the original Aaux was introduced in 2002, I intended to go back and expand the family to offer more versatility. Years went by before I was willing to pick it up again and invest the proper time into building a viable and useful recut. Just putting a new designation and tweaking a few glyphs here and there would not do the designer or the typeface justice; instead, I chose to redraw each glyph's skeleton from scratch for the four main subsets of the super family along with their italics. Each glyph across the super family is 'connected at the hip' with each style—each character carries the no frills, simple architecture that endeared so many users to it. The new recut expands the family to an enormous 72 typefaces! The original has spawned Compressed, Condensed and Wide subsets—all with corresponding weights—for complete flexibility. Additionally, all of the original weight variants have all been incorporated within the OpenType shell: Small Caps and Old Style Figures are there along with new tabular figures, numerators and denominators, expanded f-ligatures and a complete Central European character set.

Created by Swedish designer Bo Berndal in 1999, Linotype Dala Text can best be described as a softer, friendlier blackletter. Blackletter refers to typefaces that evolve out of Northern Europe's medieval manuscript tradition. Often called gothic, or Old English, these letters are identified by the traces of the wide-nibbed pen stroke within their forms. Linotype Dala Text most resembles the fraktur type of blackletter. Fraktur types were popular text faces in Northern Europe until the 20th century. Inspired by Swedish folklore, this fraktur is much softer and rounder than most examples. Its connection to the Scandinavian folkloric tradition makes Linotype Dala perfectly suited for such texts as fairy tales, medieval stories, and other things that might appeal to a child's sense of adventure. To strengthen the medieval fairy tale look, use Linotype Dala Text together with other elements of the Linotype Dala family: Library's Linotype Dala Pict and Linotype Dala Border. FF Cocon’s designer, Evert Bloemsma (1958—2005) described it as a “serious typeface”. Despite first impressions, the description holds up well. Since its 2001 release, FF Cocon has been used in an astoundingly wide variety of design applications. At large sizes, FF Cocon works as a display face, with beautiful detailing. And at small sizes, it remains surprisingly readable. The lowercase letters a, b, d, g, h, m, n, p, q, r and u, were drawn without spurs, as Bloemsma made an attempt to erase every trace of handwriting; even “normal,” neutral sans serif typefaces still retain elements in their letterforms like this. Bloemsma wanted none of it. Although a difficult starting point for a typeface, this proved successful. Bloemsma’s design is a family of rounded yet rather asymmetrical forms with details reminiscent of brush-strokes, but that were not made with a brush in hand. In spite of its claim to seriousness, FF Cocon is a family of seductive, voluptuous styles. The original FF Cocon had two widths—normal and condensed. Later, a more compact Extra Condensed version was introduced, as well as italics.

Edgar No. 9 is an original design by Alex Kaczun. Edgar No. 9 is a derivative work based on his Big Boy typeface series. It was designed specifically for display headlines, logotype, branding and similar applications. Primarily a display, this extremely versatile font has generous proportions, large counters and loose fitting which also allow the font to work well across a wide range of text sizes. Edgar No. 9 is a heavy baroque slab serif and although it shares the underling skeleton of 'Big Boy', it is a much more compact in overall proportions and spacing. A handsome bold headline font that works well in text as well as display sizes—ideally suited for publications and advertising. Alex plans to expand the font series to include a large range of weights along with corresponding italics numbering 1 thru 9, as well as, true small capitals and old style figures. In 1925, at the request of Barnhart Brothers & Spindler, the foundry he worked for, Oswald Bruce Cooper designed a wide selection of "screamers", oversized exclamation points used to grab attention in display advertising. The foundry rushed the screamers into production, much to Cooper's dismay. Cooper was disappointed with the final form of the screamers– they were designed in assorted weights to match the assorted Cooper series of typefaces, as well as in a variety of other formal solutions- squaredoff, incised, wavy, Tuscan, and rounded. Cooper's working design methodology was to re-draw his projects a number of times in order to refine the formal results. However the screamer project was hastily cut by the head of BB&S's matrix engraving room in fourteen sizes from the initial sketches, causing Cooper to fire off a fiery missive stating, "Everything I draw is bum the first half-dozen times I draw it; the trouble with these is that I drew them only once!" This typeface is the result of researching Cooper's original drawings and series of engraved proofs for the screamers, as well as the original Screamer type specimen. Cooper Screamers have never been available before in digital format.

Antonietta is Mauricio Astete Brito's first typeface, which is inspired by the eccentricity of the rococo style and Queen Marie Antoinette's wild personality. This project, supervised by Latinotype Team, was born from the idea of turning lettering into a digital typeface. Antonietta is based on the Copperplate style and inspired by the works of, among others, Hermann Zapf, Ricardo Rousselot and Herb Lubalin. The font comes in the following variants: Antonietta Script, Antonietta Caps, Antonietta Caps Illuminated, Antonietta Caps Shadow, Antonietta Caps Inline and Antonietta Ornaments. Antonietta Script is characterised by a big x-height, condensed proportions, and short ascenders and descenders, which can be modified by using the contextual alternates included in the set. Aeris™ typeface is a contemporary book face created by the American designer Tom Grace. It combines the proportions and rhythm of a sans serif font with the high contrasts and flexed strokes of script faces, while the open counters also ensure optimal legibility. Tom Grace focuses on providing subtle differentiations in his cuts and, as a consequence, this font family has its own individual structure: there are A and B variants of the basic forms regular, italic, bold and bold italic, and a display version for use in titles that also comes in A and B variants. It is advisable to use the A variant for larger font sizes, while the slightly more emphasized B variant can be recommended for smaller font sizes. Yakout is an Arabic text face that was developed by Linotype & Machinery in 1956 for hot-metal typesetting. Similar to the typewriter fonts created during this period, it utilises a limited range of letterforms to represent a full Arabic characer set, thus forming a style of type design known as Simplified Arabic. The skilful reshaping of letterforms demanded by the constraints of the original restrictive technology has given Yakout a very dynamic effect, and has helped to produce a design whose overall pattern works particularly well in newspaper setting. Digital technology has enhanced the original design by permitting the introduction of wide characters and some additional letterforms, and by improving the joining of the strong, slightly curved baseline. The HWT American Chromatic set is a multilayered font set that will allow for thousands of possible color and pattern combinations. The original 19th Century Chromatic upon which this font set is based included two fonts. The HWT digital version includes eight. The alignment is configured to allow any combination of the eight fonts to all align when identical text is set and arranged, one on top of the other. Due to the highly decorative nature of this font set, the character set is limited to upper case only with basic punctuation. Five of the eight fonts in the set can be used individually as variations of the classic Tuscan style of wood type, which is defined by its concave stems and serifs. There are no accented characters due to the ornate nature of the design and because there were no accents originally intended for this design. More precisely, we based the construction on broadnip textura, with lots of broken, edgy, interrupted strokes – try to sit on a nail bed and you’ll know why fakirs like to read just these kind of fonts! After being abandoned for some time (not accepted, nearly forbidden), we would like to give our generation a blackletter from here and now. So Fakir is not a revival, but an all new 21st-century blackletter. Fakir is a set of edgy text and display fonts, ranging from tight and heavy to light and wide.
