Dulcinea is the title of Ramiro Espinoza’s in-depth look at Spanish Baroque calligraphy’s most extreme tendencies, and especially at some of those produced by the writing masters Pedro Díaz Morante and Juan Claudio Aznar de Polanco. These 17th and 18th centuries alphabets with their plentiful calligraphic flourishes represented a marked break with the harmonic and angular Renaissance Cancellaresca style. It was Morante who first introduced and popularized the use of the pointed quill in Spain, and although his famous text entitled “Arte Nueva de escribir” – first volume published in 1616 – contains alphabets that have much in common with traditional broad nib Cancellaresca calligraphy, most of the examples therein are outgrowths of the new models put forward by the Italian master Gianfrancesco Cresci. The writing’s swashes are complex and intricate, but at the same time they feature a profusion of defects. Many of them sometimes come close to ugliness. However, these pages contain an artistic essence that bears a relationship to the ironic and sometimes somber character of Spanish Baroque. That’s why the name of the font pays homage to “Dulcinea del Toboso”, the fictional beauty from Miguel de Cervantes’s ‘Don Quixote’, a work that reveals many of the period’s conflicts, such as the contrast between utopian ideals and reality, uncertainty and madness. But Dulcinea is far from being just a revival. Its forms are not careful tracings of the outlines of Morante and Polanco’s letters, nor are they attempts to reproduce them digitally. In fact, the author of the letters says that had the font been created that way it would have been too archaic to serve as acceptable contemporary typography. However, he believes that there are myriad interesting details that can be rescued and preserved, along with the playful spirit of the original. The work of designing Dulcinea consisted of combining original historical elements with the creativity and calligraphy of the font’s author in order to produce a modern typography that isn’t based on the same traditional sources as many recently created scripts fonts. Dulcinea offers attractive options for the setting of texts and headlines: abundant ligatures and swashes along with intricate alternate characters. It sophisticated forms make it an ideal option for women’s magazines, recipe books, lingerie products or perfume packaging.

Farmer's Marker is an ode to the hobby-farmer and their honest and hardworking (but not too serious) lifestyle. The font reflects a vision of a farmer who quickly scrawls down her produce (72 Eggs + 20L of Milk + 2kg Honey) before she heads off to the market to do her best to sell what she has farmed. It is a casual, freehand, marker script that doesn't take itself too seriously. It is hand drawn by me, then meticulously perfected in Illustrator while leaving in just enough small imperfections that the font retains it's humanistic, hand-drawn and personal feel. Rosewood font, like its relatives Zebrawood, Pepperwood and Ponderosa, was created by the designer trio K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly, and has its roots in the slab serif style. The tendency toward display and ornametal typefaces began with the English Industrial Revolution. Neon Love was designed originally for a circle coaster design with a quote by the Beatles’ “All you need is Love, Love is all you need”. The inspiration of the lettering was a neon sign style where a cursive script is kind of bended from those glass wires. The idea was to get the overall look and feel of neon signs into a font, as well as creating a good raw material to use for some further photoshop effects to enhance the visual presentation. On the one hand Chateau is almost palatial but at the same time it has a quite earthy personality as represented by the stenciled strokes. However, this stencil effect serves to refine the strokes by creating the illusion of a completed thin stroke. Chateau is more of a hybrid roundhand script with its contrasting ornate capitals. Originally a fortified residence in France was called a Chateau. Today there are many estates with true Chateaux on them in Bordeaux, but it is customary for any wine-producing estate, no matter how humble, to prefix its name with "Chateau". This is true whether the building itself is a magnificent palace or a shack. The distinctive chateau architecture was in inspiration for the name of this script. Pompeijana is a part of the 1990 collection Type before Gutenberg 2’, which includes twelve contemporary typefaces each representative of a particular era. Pompeijana is Adrian Frutiger’s contribution to the project Type before Gutenberg’. He based the forms of this capital typeface on the writing of the Romans in Pompei. The decorative look of the alphabet is achieved by purely graphic means, placing the emphasis of the top and foot of the letters with heavy horizontals and diamond-shaped serifs. Frutiger completed his typeface with the weight Borders, a font consisting of numerous ornaments true to the style of the alphabet. The ornaments can be combined to form different borders and offer an optimal addition to the elegant Pompeijana. Pompeijana is best combined with modern sans serif typefaces.

Franko Luin, Odense's designer, on this typeface: With Odense I entered the field where Optima reigns in royal majesty. The first question I received was, in fact, why I designed another Optima. Look closely: Odense has as much in common with Optima as Garamond with Baskerville. Am I right? Odense Neon is a special variant that can be used for logos or single words. I had the idea for it when I noticed that the neon tubes in a sign over a store only partially followed the characters. The name comes from the Danish town Odense, the town of the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, author of, e.g., 'The Little Mermaid.' Odense is also the place where the first book in the Nordic countries was printed, the 'Breviarium Ottoniense', in 1482.

Duvall is an idealization created from the Edward J. Duvall lettering. Mr. Duvall was a teacher in lettering, who was well known for his book “Modern Sign Painting” in the late 40s and early 50s. Duvall cursive script is presented in five weights, Duvall 1, as a light version, to Duvall 5 as a bold version, and Duvall Style a decorative typeface with Inline, ideal for set in color layers combined with Duvall 5. Duvall is a Script font with low contrast, not intended to be used as a type of reading, but is however well adapted to small sizes because its simple form is easy to read. It is advisable to use this font for large to medium sizes. Duvall is ideal for composition, ordinal, superior and inferior numbers, and thanks to the OpenType features you can compose with alternate characters, old style numbers and with a complete set of glyphs for Eastern and Western European languages. The Duvall set comes with a font called Duvall Ribbons, a dingbats font with which you can create interesting headlines with the taste of the advertising of the 50s. Duvall FunWords is a dingbats playing with funny words in English, French and Spanish phrases. Duvall is ideal for packaging, signs, banners, branding and graphic design in general and can be combined harmonically with your favorite sans fonts.

Multicolored Fonts Many years ago, when Xerox Corporation still had its own font department, I came to Los Angeles in 1985 to train the IKARUS program. One day Bill Kienzel, head of the Xerox font department at the time, said we should go to the Hollywood Hills together; he knew people there who were experimenting with multicolored fonts. After a little wandering through the winding streets of the many hills, we reached a somewhat overgrown, simple family house standing under trees. A group of very inspired designers were waiting for us there. They immediately showed us the works they created using photomechanical tricks. They were fascinating. The American colors and the whole look seemed noble and enchanting. The problem was that this process was very difficult to implement and required a lot of effort on individual letters. They dreamed of a colored font that could be used for normal typesetting. We thought back and forth about how to save the individually colored letters in a common font, but soon gave up because we didn't see a technical option. So this idea and the memory of the time in Hollywood lay dormant in the back of my mind for many years, until at the beginning of this year 2023 I received an order to produce an outline typeface and the story came back to me. Suddenly I knew how to solve the problem from back then: if only the areas that should have the same color in all letters were saved in their own separate fonts, they could be colored independently of each other and later placed on top of each other. I implemented this in the 5 fonts that are now available with the 3 variants “Outside”, “Middle” and “Inside”. Together with the background, 4 colors can be combined with each other. This method works in text programs such as Word or InDesign. In Photoshop or Illustrator, the individual surfaces can also be colored by converting them into paths if the additional “Complete” variants (which contain all 3 contours) are used. There is also a “Basic” variant that can be used to achieve special effects such as overlay, bleed, etc. The first 5 fonts in this series are all based on the principle of contouring. Anyone who claims that you don't need any special fonts because they can be created automatically from any font using common programs is wrong or is only telling only half the truth. Anyone who has ever dealt with this knows that many individual adjustments to the design are necessary after contouring. This has happened in the 5 fonts that are now available and have very different styles. The dream from back then has come true. The user can set any text, long or short, in multiple colors, freely design the color scheme and apply all the usual typographic settings. Volker Schnebel, November 2023

There is a lot of fonts that overall look good but if You take a closer look, You can clearly see they have mistakes. That's why I made Dudu.
