Bauhaus is a style of art that was born in Weimar Germany in the early part of the 20th century. The font that bears the bauhaus name was constructed in accordance with this style by making use of spheres and squares with little or no added flourishes. Since this typeface was already minimalistic in appearance, it was difficult to produce a similarly styled font. So I went back to bauhaus’ architectural roots for inspiration. Chef Lorenz about the TpKurier recipe: “TpKurier is the second redesign we did of Courier. The first redesign in 2000, although based on a five-unit grid, was drawn completely by hand. Six years later we designed another grid version of Courier, and the TpKurier family was born. This version is completely constructed up till its last detail. We didn't want to correct ‘mistakes’ deriving from the use of the grid, but instead make them visible (see “S”). TpKurier is based on a very simple grid, composed a proportion of four units high by two units wide. A series of other links between them make it possible to form a font from this grid. We felt it was important to consistently work within these limitations so that any unexpected asperities would help provide the font with its character. Even though it is a rough constructed typeface it was important to us to design real italic lower case letters and not just a sloped roman (see “a”, “g” or “s”). The first family published contained a serif and sans-serif version of the TpKurier, with italic and bold.”

Born in 1831, Hermann Berthold was the son of a calico-printer. On completion of his apprenticeship as a precision-instrument maker and after practical experience gained abroad in galvanography, Hermann Berthold founded his "Institute for Galvano Technology" in Berlin in 1858. Very quickly he discovered a method of producing circular lines from brass and not, as customary at that time, from lead or zinc. The soldering normally necessary could also be dispensed with. The lines were elastic and therefore highly durable. They produced outstandingly fine results. Most of German's letterpress printers and many printers abroad placed their orders with Berthold. His products became so popular that the print trade popularized the saying "As precise as Berthold brass". In 1878 Hermann Berthold was commissioned to put an end to the confusion of typographic systems of measurement. With the aid of Professor Foerster he succeeded in devising a basic unit of measurement (1m = 2,660 typographic points). This was the birth of the first generally binding system of typographic measurement. It is still used in the trade. Hermann Berthold served as the head of the Berthold type foundry until 1888.

Every morning, after the kids have gone to school, I vacuum the floor and remove about half a kilo of breadcrumbs… No, not really have a kilo, but any given bird could probably survive on the leftovers. When it was time to name this font, Breadcrumbs was all I could think of! Breadcrumbs and children seem to go together well, as they are featured in Hansel & Gretel and Hop-o'-My-Thumb. Born into a world of serif fonts, where beautiful styling and script-like italics abound, Alexandar has neither. His appearance is, dare we say it, Spartan. For decades, the Persian-born Naghi Naghashian has been working as a graphic designer and illustrator in Germany. Arian™ is his first commercial Arabic typeface. Named after his mother, Naghi created the Arian typeface family after years of systematically analyzing the Arabic script. The Arian design is sought to fulfill the many needs and was developed for multiple languages and writing conventions. It's extremely legibilitable not only in small sizes, but also when the type is filtered or skewed. This typeface offers a fine balance between calligraphic tradition and the contemporary sans serif aesthetic now common in Latin typography.

Some unusual hand lettering was found on the cover of the 1924 edition of a Spanish language novel by Joaquin Belda entitled “La Hora del Abandono” ("The Time of Abandonment"). The title was created as all lower case characters in a semi-serif style reflecting the dawn of the Art Deco movement. A new set of capital letters was created for this digital revival, along with the numbers, punctuation and other necessary glyphs. Mantequilla JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. High Fidelity is our funky new variable font that was inspired by an incredible vintage poster we saw at the NYPL (sadly, the designer wasn't credited.) First we developed the ultra wide top-heavy style. Then, unable to resist the dynamics of variable type, we added the narrow width and violà our first variable font was born. The family of Tipografia Maracatu was born in 2020 when we could not leave the house because of the coronavirus epidemic. I had no idea how it would turn out. I just wanted to draw letters. When I finished the regular version, I thought it looked a lot like the art and music from the Northeast of Brazil, and that is why I came up with the name Maracatu. Maracatu is a musical-style original from the Northeast of Brazil. After I had the font style and the Regular version, I thought it would be nice to have Bold and Light.

Australian typographer Harry Pears continues to explore ancient type forms while maintaining his consultancy business Typeface Research Pty. Ltd., of Lake Cathie, Australia. Drawn by master German calligrapher Hermann Zapf in the 1970s, Noris Script captures the magic of the irregularities of pen strokes. The idea behind Noris Script was to bring the spontaneity of a quick handwritten script using a broad-edged pen into the modern typesetting environment. Noris is the Latin name for the German city of Nuremberg, where Hermann Zapf was born and raised. Nuremberg has something special about it, aside from Hermann Zapf, it has a great tradition of writing masters, such as Johann Neudörffer (1497-1563), Wolfgang Fugger (1515-1568), and Rudolf Koch (1876-1934).

A roughened and worn version of Daily Tabloid JNL was originally created as a non-exclusive custom font for a client. The design emulates the look of old letterpress wood type and has now been released commercially as Regional News JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. A special acknowledgement goes to Michael Hagemann of Font Mesa Fonts who partnered with Jeff Levine Fonts for the original project. Guapa was first born from a personal experiment: transforming a geometric sans serif 'à la Futura' into a charming postmodern deco design. After readings and reflections about the process-poem,“anti-literary” movement, contemporary of concretism, a font of simple form that could provide directions and sense of reading demanded its creation. So we have done the labor of the processual, modulate by consequence and not by option, born with autonomy and authority. The process demanded soon two things: first, to not be one more “hard to read pixelfont” used only by its creators; second, to attend to the requirements of the poem-process, not like a good daughter but like a modern and comprehensive grandchild (the generations understand themselves to the jumps).

Hello Buena - From Wood to Digital Type Buena is the first word I read on a letterpress paper, printed by my colleague and friend Wolfgang Wick. I was fascinated by the power of this fat wooden letters at first glance. So I started to create a digital version of it and »Buena Black« was born. Due to the fact that the original punches had only upper- case glyphs, I created the lowercase characters by myself. After that it was time to design the family... Buena is full of OpenType features. Alien UFO is a particular display font born from the fusion between raptor claws and an alien appearance. The standard characters have been conceived to look more aggressive, to wonderfully fit the atmosphere when tension is needed, to highlight the sense of unknown, mystery, fear. A lot of alternative glyphs are included to give you more aesthetic options and cover a wider spectrum of emotions to convey to the situation. The outline version can be mixed with the regular one to create contrast with the filled glyphs. It results particularly eye-catching after applying a mesmerizing neon effect. ITC Juanita is the work of Argentinian-born designer Luis Siquot and was inspired by a text set only with woodcuts which he was reading during a long international flight. ITC Juanita is a series of six distinct typefaces which Siquot sees as a personal reinterpretation of designs that originated in the 1930s and 40s and were still popular during his childhood in the 1950s. For me, Juanita is like a toy, charming, expressive, and also dramatic," says Siquot. The ITC Juanita series offers designers a range of variations based on similar structures, each variation with its own look."

Karol was designed in 2011 as a project in the MA in Advanced Typography from EINA/UAB, in Barcelona. It was born as text typeface inspired by the work of East European type designers. Two years later, Karol is ready for public release, in a collection of eight styles (four weights and matching italics) with high readability, strength and character. A few days before its publication, we received the news that Karol had been awarded the Certificate of Typographic Excellence (Judges’ Choice) of the Type Directors Club. XPawnShop is a typographical chess font; the pieces are letters. The Pawn is an awkward letter P, the knight is a horse in the shape of an h, the bishop is a decorative letter B, the rook is an elephant with an R shape, the queen is a Q, and the king is an ornate K. Two other XPawnShop fonts are made of very simple pieces, but as a bonus, both have the set of dominoes from the unicode block 1F030 to 1F093.
