The economy is a philosophy and accountants carry ambiguous but very sophisticated-sounding titles. Thousands of words and expressions are reduced to initials or monosyllabic sounds. Synthesizers are very refined and the music is very catchy. The Macintosh and MTV are making waves. Brands are lifestyles. "Yuppy," Yummy," "Bobo," "Dinky" and "Woopie" are standard consumer categories in advertising lingo. The Volkswagen identity, only 5 years old now, is all the rage in design. VAG Rundschrift, by all appearances a rounded and slightly condensed Futura, is everywhere. Tube design is king. Fast forward two dozen years. Replay, but bigger and much louder. Fab. Let's dance. Fab is Canada Type's tribute to the Eighties. It's a five-font unicase family that brings tube design into the 21st century. Since my first contact with blackletters in 1999, I became more and more fascinated by these artistic looking typefaces. It all started in the USA at the age of 16, when I took an art class. I decided to trace some blackletter typefaces because they looked very interesting. From this point on I was intrigued by blackletter fonts from all over the world. I studied their different body structures and their cultural background as well as the type designers behind it. Full of information and inspiration I started to draw my own blackletter typeface in 2006. While studying in Hamburg I got in touch with the studio of URW++, where I got skilled in type software and development. Creating a type takes an eye for detail and patience but also lots of time and so it took almost 4 years until the project was finished. And so Ruca was born. Ruca is a refined and expanded typeface. When you look at the spines, the tails or the flags you can see the detailed drawing, which makes the font also extremely good looking in very tall letters. The full character set contains over 400 characters, many ligatures, two number sets and all important currency symbols. Over 300 kerning pairs and many OTF-features make the font easy in use for professional type applications. The typeface is very well applicable for strong headlines and mastheads. A FEW THOUGHTS Indie is a trendy script, result of the wide range of possibilities that can be achieved using a pointed brush. (1) “You Only Live Once” say The Strokes, (to me, symbols of indie music) so, what would represent that sensation of volatility better than a brush? As you may already know, this time inspiration came from hipsters and indies around us: We may sometimes criticise them, we may sometimes want to be like them, but the truth is that the universo gráfico they generated these past years is gigantic, full of colour and variations. (2) Brush lettering and Sign painting are fields I've been fond of since I started as a designer. Nowadays, these styles are getting a lot of attention and maybe it’s due to the undeniable mark of life that is materialised when using a brush. This tool is so expressive that shows the passions and fears of the artist, and materialises that idea of “living the present”, so popular in this era. When you see Indie, you think of skaters, rollers, surfers, hiphop dancers, street artists, summer, and why not? California beaches. So if you feel life is only one, it’s high time you got Indie into your fonts' collection! STYLES Indie comes in 4 styles plus another one which consists only in capitals. Released by Intertype in the 1930’s, Vogue was a geometric sans serif rival to Futura and Kabel. Vogue had many unique quirks such as its distinctive G, that striking Q with a vertical tail, and many others. Almost ninety years later there has been no decent digital revival of this wonderful typeface... until now. Intervogue brings this classic to life in the modern age. Seven weights complete with true obliques and an alternate cut give Intervogue the versatility to be a true workhorse.

Approach is a modern approximation to the early grotesques. An utilitarian low contrast font, a bit mechanic but plenty of character. One of its characteristic elements is a kind of ‘elbow pipe’ shape that is present in many letters like the tail of the a, f, j, t, R, Q or 1 among others.
