American graphic designer William Addison Dwiggins' (W.A.D. for short) first typefaces were the Metro family, designed from 1927 onward. The project grew out of Dwiggins' dissatisfaction with the new European sans serif typefaces of the day, such as Futura, Erbar, and Kabel, a feeling he expressed in his seminal book Layout in Advertising. Urged by Mergenthaler Linotype to create a solution for the problem, Dwiggins began a professional relationship that would span over the next few decades. The first Metro family typeface to be released was Metroblack, brought to market by Linotype in 1929 (Metroblack #2™ the only one of the two versions that Mergenthaler Linotype eventually put into production which is available in digital form). With more of a humanist quality than the geometric styles popular in Europe at the time, Dwiggins drew what he believed to be the ideal sans serif for headlines and advertising copy. Metroblack has a warmer character than the Modernists' achievements, and the type is full of mannered curves and angled terminals (Metroblack also has an astoundingly beautiful Q). The other weights of the Metro family, Metromedium #2™ and Metrolite #2™, were designed by Mergenthaler Linotype's design office under Dwiggins' supervision. Despite having been created more than three-quarters of a century ago, the Metro family types have aged well, and remain a popular sans serif family. Although spec'd less often than other bestsellers, like Futura, Metro continues to find many diverse uses. The typeface has appeared throughout Europe and the North America for decades in newspapers and magazines, and can even help create a great brand image when used in logos and corporate identity. Dwiggins ranks among the most influential graphic designers and typeface designers of the 20th Century. He has several other quality fonts in the Linotype Originals, including the serif text faces Electra™ and New Caledonia™, as well as Caravan™, a font of typographic ornaments."

Quirky and irregular FS Split is no ordinary typeface. Its irregular proportions make it unique, with round letters appearing wide, and straight letters narrow. Other quirks include its eclectic crossbars – the uppercase ‘A’ has an unusually low bar, while the bar on ‘G’ is particularly long. The uppercase has many interesting features in fact, including large counters, closed terminals on certain letters like ‘J’, and a cap-height that lines up with ascenders. The lowercase also holds surprises – the dots on ‘i’ and ‘j’ are unusually large, and some characters, such as ‘g’, feature double-storey counters. An extreme but stylish italic The italic versions of FS Split Sans and Serif are particularly striking. While similar in style to their upright, Roman versions, they take on a larger-than-usual 18-degree angle, making the forward-slant more dramatic. Although the main purpose of any italic is to help words and phrases stand out, this unique execution helps to make the italic variants of FS Split stylish fonts in their own right – they would work brilliantly on magazine covers, in titles and headlines, pull quotes, and even used commercially in logos and corporate branding. Serif and sans: a split personality FS Split Sans and Serif have their differences but also their similarities, contrasting and complementing each other perfectly. This ‘love hate’ relationship inspired the name of the typeface family, and means the two variants provide a versatile, typographic palette for use in graphics and branding. While its proportions are similar to the sans, the serif has a bigger contrast between its weights of bold, regular and light, bracketed serifs, and different styles of terminals, some being straight and others ball-shaped. FS Split Sans has more subtlety and simplicity, with a smaller weight contrast, less flamboyant terminals, and more consistent counter sizes. The two variants are distinct yet alike, so can be used successfully either in isolation or together.

Conversation Hearts are inspired by the sweethearts and conversation hearts that can be found all over the US and Britain, but not in Germany. A source of endless fun and surprise. As a typographer to me they are also a surprising document of written communication. Most people complain that nowadays the inscriptions are not as sweet as they used to be. While they used to held romantic and promising inscriptions like “Be True” “Sweet Talk”, today they carry “Tweet me” “Ur Hot” and “Party Girl”. So i took this as a motivation to work with conversation sweetheart on a conceptial inspirational and typographical level. The obvious: every letter pressed on the keyboard brings out a conversation heart that starts with the letter - i.e. L = Loverboy, H = Heartless but what to write? Since i didn't want to reproduce the old “Fax me” and “Email me” I had to come up with something new. Something with a personal relation and of course something that I Love - what else could i write in the shape of the heart? So I tried to access my upper subconsciousness and looked for two words for every letter in the alphabet. One for the capital letter pressed and one word for the lowercase letter. Resulting in a Kurt Schwitters worthy assemblage of vocables "Post-office" “Internship” “Zebra” “Answers” etc. It is not easy to read a text set in Conversation Hearts but easier as a text set in Zapf-Dingbats. To sparkle the visual appearance uppercase letters are filled hearts with “carved” inscription, while lowercase letters are an outlined heart with written inscription. Conversations Hearts is a part of the Light Hearted Font Collection that is inspired by a recording of Jean Baudrillard with the title, "Die Macht der Verführung" (The Power of Seduction) from 2006. Further inspiration came from the article, "The shape of the heart: I'm all yours". “Kindah” is a Yemeni ancient tribe with evidence of its existence going back to the second century B.C.E. The kings of Kindah exercised an influence over a number of associated tribes more by personal prestige than by coercive settled authority. The Kindites were polytheistic until the 6th century CE, with evidence of rituals dedicated to the gods Athtar and Kahil found in their ancient capital in south-central Arabia. It is not clear whether they converted to Judaism or remained pagan, but there is a strong archaeological evidence that they were among the tribes in Dhu Nuwas' forces during the Jewish king’s attempt to suppress Christianity in Yemen. They converted to Islam in the mid-7th century CE and played a crucial role during the Muslims' conquests of their surroundings. Among the most famous figures from Kindah known as Kindites are Imru' al-Qays (526-565?), al-Ash'ath ibn Qays (599-661), Hujr ibn 'Adi al-Kindi (?-660), al-Miqdad Ibn Aswad al-Kindi (589-653), and Abu Yusuf Yaíqub ibn Ishaq as-Sabbah al-Kindi (805-873) known as the Philosopher of the Arabs. "Kindah" font is a modern Kufic font comes in three weights (i.e., bold, regular, and thin) which is mainly designed to be used as a display Arabic font. The main feature of this typeface is the mixture of curves and rectangular shapes used in the designed Arabic characters. Kindah font was inspired by the design of the Yemeni modern windows of houses in which only top part of the arc is used for building such windows which reflects the originality of the architecture preserved in this part of the world. "Kindah" font is extremely outstanding when used in printed materials with big sizes especially for headline, titles, signs, and names of brands. Hence, it is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. It has also a Latin character set and it also supports several Arabic character sets which makes it proper for composing alphabetical and numerical words in Arabic, Urdu, and Persian.

Derived from a photograph Rian Hughes took in Hong Kong, the Roadkill family of typefaces is a literal interpretation of rough and worn road lettering. The original provided almost all of the key character shapes, with the others being designed to keep the unique hand painted feel intact. Most of the letters have alternate versions provided. This font works equally well at wider letterspacing settings. Roadkill Alternates provides curved versions of the 2 and the S, a G with higher crossbar, and less worn versions of several other characters. The heavy version packs even more gritty wallop in a non-condensed and blacker weight. Roadkill Heavy packs even more gritty wallop in a non-condensed and blacker weight. RoyalBavarian was comissioned by King Ludwig the First of Bavaria about 1834. He was probably the greatest king Bavaria ever had, but he fell in disgrace for a short affair with the infamous Lola Montez and subsequently had to resign. He died in 1868, peaceful and happy in Nice on the French Riviera. I happened on an original etching of his type-guidelines for official writers of those days about 20 years ago. I always thought it was a very nice Fraktur (Blackletter), not a sturdy militaristic one as most of them are. Being me, I started with first tests immediately and then just forgot the font on my computer. When I was sorting out old stuff a couple of months ago I happened on the etchings once again and kept on working intermittently on the letters. The Plain cut is pretty much like the king wanted it. Designed in 1950s Japan by Okanao & Kushiro, the perfect partnership until artistic temperaments drove them apart. The duo spent years crafting the font with the working title “Messenjā”, Okanao bringing technical expertise to craft letterforms, while Kushiro made it his life, obsessively working late into the night to check pages for errors. For him the project was never about making money, it was an artistic endeavor to reprint the great Western works of literature. When he found out Okanao had secretly sold the rights to the font for use as a logo for a major Japanese manufacturer, Kushiro burned all evidence of the designs in a fit of passionate fury. The two reportedly never spoke again. “Messenjā” was thought lost forever until a type specimen was discovered in a vintage typewriter box bought on eBay. Now redrawn and available as 57-nao, a faithful and beautifully crafted monospace characterized by what is considered Okanao’s defining moment, the angular loop on the lowercase ‘a’.

We have grown a new flower in our Garden, but this time, in a more emotional way, capturing its vibrations and using them to create a fresh handmade typeface: ‘Bach’, a display type system inspired by the new lifestyle trends that look to go back to basics and increase the value of old natural healing methods. Bach comes in two styles: a 6-weight Serif font in regular and italic versions, and a 2-weight Script in regular and bold versions. Ornaments are also included! I am (trying to) learn Danish using an app on my phone. The grammar and vocabulary are not that difficult, as the Danish language is very close to the Dutch language. The pronunciation, however, is quite tricky. Words look simple when written down, but when pronounced, they sound very different. Take ‘pige’ (‘girl’) - it reads ‘pee-guh’, right? Well, it is pronounced ‘pee-uh’. Or how about ‘brød’ (meaning bread)? If you keep in mind that the o-slash is pronounced as the ‘i’ in bird - almost like ‘uh’, it should be br-uh-d, right? Wrong again. It is pronounced br-uh-l. Aaargghh! I will succeed, hopefully! Utroligt is a Danish word meaning ‘incredible’. It is a nice, uncomplicated all caps font. I made it with a cheap rollerball pen and some nice French paper. Comes with double letter ligatures and all the diacritics you’d like - including the danish ones.

In the year 1791, the 20th of June, the king of France Louis XVI attempted to flight from Paris to the Luxembourg. He was intercepted on the road and taked to Paris again on the 21st. A few month later, in September, the first French democratic constitution was promulgated, transferring the sovereignty from the king to the French people. This font was created inspired from the steady hand of a lawyer writing a farm renting contract a few days after the advent of the new French regime. It is a "Pro" font containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. The numerous alternates and ligatures allow to made the font looking as closely as possible to a real hand. Using an OTF software, the features allow to vary the characters without anything to do but to select contextual alternates and standard ligatures and/or stylistic alternates options.

The flower children of Canada Type are at it again. This time we went above and beyond the call of duty and right into the land of reconstruction in order to make this font. When we saw a few letters from an early 1970s film type called Jefferson Aeroplane, we had the sudden urge to bring their beauty to digital life. But since further research revealed no more letters or information, we just had to "wing" the rest of this Aeroplane. Now this Genie is out of the lava lamp, and it's nothing short of groovy. A few symbols and alternates come within the font, so make sure to check out the very full character set. We love this font so much that we couldn't help but play with it for a week. Many years ago I studied American Sign Language in an effort to better communicate with some friends of mine within the deaf community. I found ASL to be a beautifully expressive language from a vibrant and active culture. Out of that attempt came this stylized depiction of the manual alphabet used in finger-spelling. Until recently it had only existed in analog form, born of pen and ink on paper. So now I'm glad to say it’s turned digital. Typing a period (.) will reveal the sign for “I Love You” (a combination of the letters I, L and Y), which fits nicely within the shape of a heart. Holding down the shift key while again typing period (greater symbol) will reveal the heart in its filled-in form, which can serve as an underlay. Use these in an application that supports layering in order to create different color combinations. There’s a stylistic alternate letter “S” and an “OO” ligature which can be accessed in OpenType-savvy apps.

The idea of this typeface outlines arrived to the authors exactly on the viewing platform, under the impression of the waterfalls, which are escaping from the dam womb, falling from almost 50 meters altitude and becoming white-haired during this flight. There are planetarium, circus, some theatres, many museums in Volgograd. One of football matches of Euro-2004 qualifying round took a place in the "Rotor" stadium in Volgograd. Volgograd holds the longest - above 50 km - park in the world. Its avenues, squares, embankments are beautiful, Volgograd central districts are built in unique architecture style called the Stalin Empire.
