Bulletin Script was a style offered by several American wood type manufacturers in the late 19th Century. It may actually be one of the most iconic styles of the late 1960 Psychedelic era when Victorian revival was in full swing. Toward the end of the 1920s, Art Deco influences were starting to creep into modern design. The hand lettered title on the cover of the1928 sheet music for “Fascinatin’ Vamp” not only embraced the new Deco movement, but sent it on a wild typographic ride. I have always liked Scandinavian folklore, although I have to admit that I didn’t know about the Fossegrim. Fossegrim is a fiddle or harp playing water sprite - usually friendly, but he has been known to lure children and women in deep water with his music. Regular Joe was first delivered to the font world by Ron and Joe. Yes, the same Ron and Joe of the ArtParts fame. A few years of being so regular, Regular Joe became, well, just bored. In October 2010 I released a font called “Zanoix” It was based upon a an old horror movie poster. I looked through and old folder, and found the font that served as a base for this the grungy font. Zonaix is opposite to Zanoix, because it is super clean, pointy and is made entirely of straight lines! Two Cents Plain JNL is a simple sans design for titling, sign work, display ads and so forth. The name is derived from the way folks in the Northeast used to ask for a glass of seltzer water at restaurants and soda fountains decades ago: "Give me a two cents plain." It was always cheaper to order plain seltzer than to have flavored syrup added, and this was especially true in the years during the Great Depression when every penny made a difference.

Bluenote is a font based on Franklin Gothic condensed. In the 60s and 70s the record label Blue Note published all those classic jazz records of my youth. In a career spanning the early 1900s through 1940, George M. Cohan wrote and produced over 50 plays, 300 songs and was also an actor, singer and dancer. Many of his works honored his Irish roots, and the cover of one piece of sheet music called “The Irish American” (1905) had its title hand lettered in a condensed Art Nouveau type design with tiny spurred serifs. This is now available digitally as Dress Rehearsal JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.
