HGB Memento was designed to replace 12 bronze plaques with the names of those who died in World War I. The 12 plaques were stolen in 2016. Stone tablets were made on which the original writing was engraved using sandblasting. Memento is therefore suitable for commemorative plaques and for texts of a sacred nature. Extremely short ascenders and descenders allow very narrow lines. The design language of the Memento comes from the 1920s with echoes of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Playing with old rub-on letters led to this alphabet. On the Letraset sheets (the older ones still remember...) there were always letters left over that were never or rarely used. I sometimes let interns play with it. To explain, I first rubbed an example myself. Two y's from a Helvetica made a pretty shape. Looking closely, you see a contoured, italic N. I developed the HGB Ypsilon font from this N. A purely decorative typeface – it could be interesting for some logo.

As usual, I stumbled upon a great 1971 Italian movie poster when looking for something else. The poster for “La Morte Cammina Con I Tacchi Alti” (directed by Luciano Ercoli), was made by an unknown artist and comes with a great font. Cortese was based on this movie poster font, but as I started working on the glyphs, I figured they would even look better in ligatures. So here it is: Cortese font - complete with 135 ligatures, accents and even Greek and Cyrillic!

Stefan Hauser designed the fun font F2F BoneR in 1996 for the trendy German techno magazine Frontpage. Morris Fuller Benton's Hobo [designed in 1910] is one of a number of fonts which have been so over-used that many designers shy away from it altogether. Popular music of the early 1900s included a genre called two step; round dances utilizing a sliding step with a tempo in either march or polka time. 1911's "Daughters of the American Revolution" was one such march/two step. Faithfully reproduced from my father’s design drawings made at The Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, Wolverhampton in 1939. Strong nostalgic influences of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. What caught my eye was the consistency with which each particular character was formed: every ‘R’ like every other, every ‘S’ the same. Tight letter spacing and loose word spacing characterised his titling but he didn’t trust himself to print without first ruling guidelines, a hint of which remain in this font.

This humanistic sans serif design was inspired by a conversation that David Quay had with renowned type designer Hans Meyer, during ATypI in Paris, 1989. The A.B. Dick Company was a manufacturer of mimeograph duplicating machines which produced copies by the process of transferring ink through an etched wax stencil onto paper. Customers had the option of purchasing various size and style lettering guides in order to create eye-catching headlines or announcements on their print projects. Bungehuis font was modeled on the lettering found on an Amsterdam art deco building from 1931. This building on the Spuistraat, also called "Het Bungehuis", used to house offices, but is now part of the University of Amsterdam. In 2015 it had its brief moment of fame, when students, demanding more democracy at the University, occupied it. Bungehuis is a heavy art deco font and would look great on posters and in headlines.
