Frederic Goudy designed National Old Style Roman in 1916. It is loosely based on a logo he lettered for the National Biscuit Company in 1901. Steve Matteson expanded on Goudy’s original by designing a bold, semibold and matching italics. While much of Goudy’s work is strongly influenced by Venetian types of the 15th and 16th centuries - this design has a truly American quality about it. The design is useful for text or headlines that captures a sense of Americana.

Falena is a type family designed by Gianluca Boffito. This simple, easy-to-read, geometric-style sans serif family is published by Typoforge Studio and consists of 18 weights (together with italics). It has more than 300 glyphs per style (including special characters). Falena works equally well in long form type settings and for titles, headings, posters. It comes with two sets of original dingbats (set 1 contains 52 ornaments, set 2 contains 52 truly distinctive and stylish icons).

This font was inspired by one of Antoine Augereau's three roman typefaces: the Gros Romain (±16 Pts) size, used in 1533 to print Le miroir de l'âme..., a religious poetic compilation by Marguerite de Navarre, sister of the French king François the first. It seems possible that Augereau may have also engraved italic styles. This alphabet, with its complete small caps collection, is covering all West, East and Central European languages (including Baltic and Celtic) and Turkish.

Interbellum is an Art Deco inspired font family which contains 3 display fonts, 2 modern-looking text fonts and 4 AllCaps fonts. Euroque is the 23rd font family from Cozyfonts Foundry, a California Foundry established in 2012 by designer and typographic illustrator Tom Nikosey Euroque began with pencil sketches, as all my fonts trace their beginnings. Influenced by European poster art of the 1920s and 1930s Euroque takes its name almost literally, European Style. These fonts are designed as a Small Caps Family, where the lower case mirrors the Upper case in design but its weights are compatible and consistent.

VLNL Jelly Donuts’ Jelly Donuts is the round sibling of VLNL Donuts. Equally funky, just round. Sicret Mono is a monospaced and geometric typeface family. It was drawn by Måns Grebäck in 2020, and was created by following a strict mathematical pattern consisting of only two basic shapes, in four different combinations, set on a 2 by 3 grid. The resulting product is a font with a serious and solid character, with an official look while yet going towards sci-fi because of its digital nature. The family consists of nine weights: Thin, Extra Light, Light, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold, Extra Bold and Black. The range of weights makes it very adaptable, and all the weights works very well together to give a sentence or graphic tone and emphasization. As Sicret Mono is a font with over 850 glyphs, it is guaranteed to contain all characters you'll ever need, including all punctuation and numbers. It has a very extensive lingual support, covering Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew as well as European and American languages.

The Bitstream version of Trump Mediaeval of Linotype, 1954-60, by Georg Trump, a prolific German type designer. It seems to be his best typeface. It has a vigorous and assumed oldstyle roman and italic that is the sloped roman, except for the letters a, e, f. With its crisp angularity and wedge-shapes serifs, Trump Mediaeval appears carved in stone. It is a strong text typeface that is highly legible and especially useful for low-resolution output. It is useful in display work too. Cyrillic version developed for ParaType by Vladimir Yefimov and Isabella Chaeva and released in 2010. Cyrillic italics maintain the main feature of Trump Mediaeval to be the sloped roman, except for the letters г, д, и, й, n, т. There are old style figures, additional ligatures and fractions available at all styles and small caps at the Roman 55. Black style was added in 2011 by Vladimir Yefimov.

Weaving is a family in which the letters fit together so that wavy lines separate them both horizontally and vertically. It creates this effect by alternating letters on upper-case keys with those on lower-case letters and this alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt). (The upper-case can be used alone but it unlikely that the lower-case characters could be used by themselves.) The family is a thinner and condensed version of the typeface Woven, but in condensing it, the tessellation properties that a were in Woven are lost. It is a decorative display face but because there are few typefaces similar to it, it is hard to predict what uses it may have. Be creative!

Playland is a monoline script typeface designed by Oscar Guerrero exclusively for Monotype. It was inspired by the lettering in Italian urban signage. The Playland typeface has a copperplate calligraphy structure and its letterforms explore different endings in some letters which gives it an informal and fresh touch to words. Playland has a unique and fresh appearance. Unlike similar typefaces that are lighter and more spontaneous, the design of Playland features careful and deliberate curves that give it a slightly more formal and firm look. From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. Current versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illlustrator, InDesign) do contain support for the randomization feature. After doing this for so many years, one would think my fascination with the old history of writing would have mellowed out by now. The truth is that alongside being a calligraphy history buff, I'm a pop technology freak. Maybe even keener on the tech thing, since I just can't seem to get enough new gadgets. And after working with type technologies for so many years, I'm starting to think that writing and design technologies as we now know them, being about 2.5 post-computer generations, keep becoming more and more detached from what the very old humanity arts/tasks they essentially want to facilitate. In a world where command-z is a frequently used key combination, it’s difficult to justify expecting a Morris-made book or a Zaner-drawn sentence, but accidental artistic “mutations” become welcome, marketable features. When fluid pens were introduced, their liquid saturation influenced type design to a great extent almost overnight an influence professional designers tend to play down. Now round stroke endings are a common sight, and the saturation is so clean and measured, unlike any liquid-paper relationship possible in reality. Some designers even illustrate their work by overlaying perfect circles at stroke ends, in order to illustrate how “geometric” their work was. Because if it’s measured with precise geometry, it’s got to be meaningful design. And once in a while, by a total freak accident, the now-cherished mutations prove to have existed long before the technology that caused them. Rolling Pen was cued by just such a thing: A rounded, circular, roll-flowing calligraphy from the late nineteenth century seemingly one of those experimental takes on what inspired Business Penmanship, another font of mine. Looking at it now it certainly seems to be friendlier, more legible, and maybe even more practical and easier to execute than the standard business penmanship of those days, but I guess friendliness and simplicity were at odds with the stiff manner business liked to present itself back then, so that kind of thing remained buried in the professional penman’s oddities drawer. It would be quite a few years before all this curviness and rounding were thought of as symbolic of graceful movement, which brought such a flow closer to the idea of fine art. Even though in this case the accidental mutation just happens to not be a mutation after all, the whole technology-transforms-application argument still applies here. I'm almost sure “business” will be the last thing on people’s minds when they use this font today. One extreme example of that level of disconnect between origin and current application is shown here, with the so-called business penmanship strutting around in gloss and neon. Rolling Pen is another cup of mine that runneth over with alternates, swashes, ligatures, and other techy perks. To explore its full potential, please use it in a program that supports OpenType features for advanced typography. Afternoon Tea is inspired by a lettering specimen featured in Letters and Lettering by Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring published in 1938. The striking features are the elegant balance between thick and thin strokes (demonstrating its obvious ink pen influence) while maintaining a sturdy presence which is ideal for titles and headings. Afternoon Tea is caps only.

Quixley was designed by Vince Whitlock, who was inspired by an old Zoltan Nagy typeface. The capitals can be used alone or combined with the lowercase and should be set with close letter and word spacing. Quixley is an eye-catching, condensed display typeface whose unusual angles and marked stroke contrast lend it marvelous visual appeal.

Woolwich is a jolly fine display font, named after a district in south-east London. Woolwich, somewhat inspired by Futura condensed, was completely made by hand and comes in a clean and an eroded version. It is highly legible and will certainly make your designs stand out. Woolwich speaks a lot of languages, including the language of doodles.

Dew is a script font with blobs on the stems that according to author’s imagination resemble dew drops on the caules. This font was inspired by the embossed lettering on cigar boxes. The letters, or entire words, are often surrounded by raised dots, and that was our idea here. We drew this about 1997, and have been refining it ever since. All letters are on the lowercase keyboard; the end pieces and spaces are on the caps.

Oxford was designed by Arthur Baker for Agfa Compugraphic in 1989. A calligraphic typeface with a slight incline, fine lines, and delicate serifs, Oxford is easily identified by its quirky lowercase b. Oxford is a functional display type for headings, announcements, and brochures that also works for setting small amounts of text, such as ad copy.

Onthel is a bold-script with a touch of rhythmic brush that is very charming and has character. It was inspired by Onthel Bicycles, which is a Dutch design bicycle that is characterized by an upright sitting position and has a very strong and high-quality reputation. This font is a good choice for your logotype and lettering craft.

Unicorn is a super-condensed Display font with a subtle dramatic flair that works especially well in titles, headers and editorial design.
