The long awaited and much requested revival of Robert Hunter Middleton's very popular classic is finally here. Mayfair Cursive was an instant hit for Middleton in 1932, and it went on being used widely until late into the 1970s, in spite of it never having crossed over to film type technology. Like a few of its contemporary designs, most notably the work of Lucien Bernhard, Mayfair is a formal script that is somewhat based on traditional italic forms with swash uppercase, but also employs subsidiary hairline strokes in some of its lowercase as an emphasis to the script's cursive traits. Why these gorgeous letters never made the leap into photo typesetting is a mystery to us. But here they are now in digital form, almost three quarters of a century since they first saw the light in metal. Mayfair was redrawn from original 48 pt specimen. It also underwent a major expansion of character set. Plenty of swash characters and ligatures were added. An alternate set of lowercase was also made, in order to give the user a choice between connected and disconnected variations of the same elegant script. Mayfair ships in all popular font formats. While the Postscript Type 1 and True Type versions come in two fonts (Mayfair and Mayfair Alt), the OpenType version is a single font containing all the extra characters in conveniently programmed features that are easily accessible by OpenType-supporting software applications. We are quite sure today's graphic designers will be appreciative of having access to the face that all but defined menus, romance covers, wine and liquor labels and chocolate boxes for almost two 20th century generations.

Youthful Fontsmith received a brief to develop a font that would form part of the broadcast identity for the UK’s first digital Freeview channel – E4. It needed to work seamlessly in text and display, both in print and on-screen, and please the eye of the target audience, 18-34-year-olds. So, young, fresh and informal. No problem. Clementine, from Okaycat, is a font designed to be expressive. First, we wanted Clementine to be uplifting, friendly and warm. Secondly, we wanted it to be familiar, but neither staid nor boring. To make Clementine more warm and friendly, 90 degree corners and cubic forms were not allowed. All straight edges are either subtly curved or lightly tapered (with the small exception of the serif foundations, to create a secure base). To add an uplifting feel, all tapering flows towards the apex of the forms and the ascenders were allowed extra rising freedom above the capital height, similar to the effect intended in the architecture of old European churches -- to point all elements gently upwards towards heaven. To keep Clementine familiar, traditional type setting shapes were used throughout the font. To avoid the usual coldness of typical typewritten fonts, all forms were opened up, calligraphic touches were introduced, and any unnecessary serif elements were omitted. The result is a look that brings a touch of nostalgia or a "retro" feel. Clementine is highly appropriate anywhere a soft and friendly feel is desired. Can work well as a body text, or as ad copy. Clementine is extended, containing the full West European diacritics & a full set of ligatures, making it suitable for multilingual environments & publications.

Isabelle is the closest thing to a metal type revival Jim Rimmer ever did. The original metal face was designed and cut in late 1930s Germany, but its propspects were cut short by the arrival of the war. This was one of Jim's favourite faces, most likely because of the refined art deco elements that reminded him of his youthful enthusiasm about everything press-related, and the face's intricately thought balance between calligraphy and typography. Not to mention one of the most beautiful italics ever made. Jim's early 2000s digitization included mathematical corrections to the original metal cut, as well as some functional improvements for digital use. In 2013, during the remastering of the entire Rimmer collection, Isabelle underwent a considerable rethinking/expansion and was rechristened Isabelle Pro. The new revisions include small caps, ligatures, seven types of figures, automatic fractions, extended Latin language support, stylistic alternates that include lowercase serif angle options in the roman and looped ascenders/descenders in the italic, and plenty of extra OpenType features like caps-to-small-caps substitution, case-sensitive positioning, ordinals, and extended class-based kerning. Now each of the Isabelle Pro fonts includes over 680 glyphs. 20% of this font's revenues will be donated to the Canada Type Scholarship Fund, supporting higher typography education in Canada.

Freundschafts-Antiqua AR is based on a 20th-century German type design. Freundschafts-Antiqua (which was also called Chinesische Antiqua) was designed by the Chinese calligrapher Yü Bing-nan when he was a student at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst at Leipzig in 1960. It was cast in 1964 by VEB Typoart, Dresden, in 9-pt and 28-pt (Didot). The design combines the best German traditions with the Chinese bamboo pen. It is a unique, wholly modern, yet quiet and dignified typeface which is well suited for text-setting in many sizes. The original design was carefully crafted with all non-kerning letters (none of the letters overhangs its side-bearings); the lower-case f was designed so that no ligatures were needed. The AR fonts include the type's ch and ck logotypes, monetary signs and all the standard accents. The letterfit of the original design is retained and, as can be seen in the attached printable .pdf, text composed at normal sizes is very agreeable indeed. Bo Berndal, the master Swedish typographer, is the eponymous designer of Berndal, a contemporary text family with five different styles. This family represents a new achievement for Bo Berndal, who has spent many years working to optimize text legibility in the printed media. Several small tricks make the Berndal family an interesting milestone in legibility. Berndal's letterforms contain large x-heights. Large x-heights open up the counterforms of letters, making text appear lighter on a page, but their correspondingly shorter ascenders and descenders can hinder legibility. This does not occur in Berndal at all! Coupled with this experiment, Berndal's various font weights display a certain softness and roundness. The letterforms themselves are relatively wide, with an overall consistency in width. The calligraphic nature of the strokes has been minimized, yet a contrast stroke-thickness is still to be noticed within the alphabet. Berndal's five styles offer almost everything that one could want from a good text family. The Regular weight may be paired with Small Caps, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic. All styles ship in the OpenType format, and include tabular and old style figures. The two italic weights are made up of true italics, not obliques. The Berndal family is a part of the Take Type 5 collection from Linotype GmbH."

The origins of Bembo go back to one of the most famous printers of the Italian Renaissance, Aldus Manutius. In 1496, he used a new roman typeface to print the book de Aetna, a travelogue by the popular writer Pietro Bembo. This type was designed by Francesco Griffo, a prolific punchcutter who was one of the first to depart from the heavier pen-drawn look of humanist calligraphy to develop the more stylized look we associate with roman types today. In 1929, Stanley Morison and the design staff at the Monotype Corporation used Griffo's roman as the model for a revival type design named Bembo. They made a number of changes to the fifteenth-century letters to make the font more adaptable to machine composition. The italic is based on letters cut by the Renaissance scribe Giovanni Tagliente. Because of their quiet presence and graceful stability, the lighter weights of Bembo are popular for book typography. The heavier weights impart a look of conservative dependability to advertising and packaging projects. With 31 weights, including small caps, Old style figures, expert characters, and an alternate cap R, Bembo makes an excellent all-purpose font family. Karmina is a text typeface developed mainly for pocket books and budget editions. It was built to withstand the worst printing conditions: low quality papers, high printing speed with web presses and variations in the ink level of the printing press. Some of Karmina's most representative features are the rather large serifs, intended to work perfectly in small reproduction sizes, the sharpness of the shapes, including some calligraphic reminiscences, and the large and yet graceful ink traps in the acute connections. Structurally, Karmina combines a significantly large x-height with relatively compressed letterforms. The result of these features grants Karmina outstanding legibility and economy. Karmina features four weights and 800 characters per weight, including small caps, discretionary ligatures, fractions and a complete range of numerals for every use. It also supports over 40 languages that use the latin extended alphabet. Karmina was selected in the text typography category at the Letras Latinas exhibition 2006 and won a merit in the European-wide ED-Awards competition 2007. Karmina Basic is a reduced version of Karmina. It is still an OT-font but without any particular features except of a set of ligatures, class-kerning and language support including CE and Baltic.

Introducing Promenade – a calligraphic serif that started on paper with a flat nib pen (see the 6th image), and blossomed into a full serif with italics. At its core, this font is just... beautiful. It's elegant, it's crisp, it's delicate, but can still hold its own. As I was creating the graphics, I just couldn't get over the flow of the letters – especially the italic. It's got class, but also isn't afraid to rock a pair of Doc Marten's. Funny enough, Jen from Tonic (they make beautiful websites) saw a preview of this font and said, "I'd take that font to prom." Which of course spurred a conversation about how this font would take a Mercedes G-Series instead of a limo, and wear Doc Marten's instead of heels, but still wear the most gorgeous dress, and that is 100% Promenade (and inspo for the name – thanks, Jen!). I've also been loving combining the regular and italic, especially for logos (see the "Friendfolk" logo) One thing to note about Promenade is the letter spacing. It was spaced for clean reading and intentional balance, so I recommend setting the spacing a little tighter if you want to create the display look found in many of the logo mockups(around -20 to -40 should do!).

Camille was designed with exaggerated emphasis on letter vertical characteristic, by virtually eliminating the typical Arabic horizontal line look. This font glyph weights and look and feel are heavily influenced by early Kufic Quranic calligraphy style. Camille supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. This font family includes two letter spacing flavors: isolated for small text and overlapped for large or display text. The two spacing flavors have one weight each with a normal and a left-slanted Italic version. Neacademia is a Latin and Cyrillic type family inspired by the types cut by 15th century punchcutter Francesco Griffo for Venetian printer Aldus Manutius. Beyond the letterforms themselves, however, the digital fonts themselves are based on the techniques and methods Griffo employed. The family comprises four distinct variants optimised for specific point sizes, as was traditional in metal type. While the display sizes maintain a visual link to calligraphic roots, text sizes exhibit more typographic qualities, following the hand of the carver. Likewise, Neacademia maintains its even colour on the page by carefully employing alternative letterforms, rather than leaning on a multitude of kerning pairs. A geeky little detail you’ll likely need to point out with a magnifying glass to your type friends, but creating a neat texture that works in readers favour nonetheless. Neacademia’s historically sensitive eye is put to work for modern typographers’ needs. Ladoga — one of the most beautiful Russian designs from the soviet period. The type family was developed in Polygraphmash in 1968 by Anatoly Shchukin on the base of his own lettering for book covers and titles. It was one of the first attempts in Cyrillic typography to create text face in a style of renaissance antiqua. Stylization to broad pen calligraphy resembles early forms of Latin types that were based on handwritten humanistic minuscule. Unique in its character set digital version of Ladoga was designed by Viktor Kharik on the base of artworks of Shchukin for ParaType. The family consists of roman and italic styles in text and display versions. Character set includes characters of original shapes as well as more modern alternatives. Besides there are a set of additional characters, old style figures and small caps. The fonts cover all modern languages based on Latin and Cyrillic scripts, Greek alphabet (including polytonic extension), Hebrew and historical Cyrillic letters.
