Atlan—a Latin ‘spin-off’ of classic geometric sans typefaces. Remembering typefaces like ‘Kabel’ by Rudolf Koch, while paying attention to current design needs, was the starting point for ‘Atlan’—a simple, elegant and appealing font. This typeface is based on highly expressive sans-serif geometric fonts of the 1920s. We challenged ourselves to reinterpret these characteristics, without losing expressiveness, in order to create a functional and versatile design. This process resulted in a font with display features, well-suited for light, uniform-coloured texts. The family offers a variety of styles from the elegant Thin weight—ideal for publishing and corporate websites—to the Heavy variant (perfect for logotypes and packaging), which reveals the stylistic elements of the typeface.

Nucleometer is a very contrasting and at the same time elegant display font. It is ideal for large headlines and impressionable typography. A feature of the Nucleometer is the rounding of the lowercase letters a, b and r, as well as a funny "tail" in the letters t, g, j, f, t, y. This gives it a more lively and unique character. Chaparral is the work of type designer Carol Twombly and combines the legibility of slab serif designs popularized in the 19th century with the grace of 16th century roman book lettering. Mira is a playful, decorative Art Nouveau font, released by Roos & Jung Foundry in Offenbach AM, Germany about 1902. My latest book production group is quite conservative. I discovered my need for a pair of headline fonts with the same vertical metrics which are looser and more lively. Since the serif family is Biblia Serif, and the Sans family is Draetha [which is Welch for preach], Araldo [which is Italian for herald] makes sense to me. Narrow has my normal set of Opentype features with small caps, small cap figures, and the rest of the figure sets. Bold is too heavy for small caps, without messing with the metrics. So, it has the normal figure sets, plus a decent set of discretionary ligatures. They both work well, and are meeting my need for a headline family to add to the book production group.

Mariam is a traditional-style Arabic headline face designed by the famous Arabic type designer Ismet Chanbour, who also designed Al Harf Al Jadid - another highly successful typeface from Linotype. When I started working on this font, I had the radio on. Ed Sheeran was singing his song ‘Castle On The Hill’ and when I looked at this new font of mine, I couldn’t help but notice it had a bit of a medieval look. So I named it Castle On The Hill. COTH is a very lively, messy handpainted serif. It was made with a Japanese brush pen. I actually had a different look in mind, but this is what came out of the pen and I quite liked its looks. It is especially useful for children’s book covers, apps and posters, but be my guest and use it as you like. All it needs is a designers’ touch, a nice tune and a sunset.

In 1952, Charles Peignot made a bold and fortuitous move: he invited a young Swiss designer to Paris to be the art director of the Deberny & Peignot type foundry. This started the professional type design career of Adrian Frutiger; and since then he has designed an astonishing range of masterful typefaces. One of the earliest for Deberny & Peignot was Président, a sharp-seriffed Latin titling face. Latin" is a typographic designation for roman typefaces with wedge or triangular-shaped serifs, a stylistic form that Frutiger would return to later with his beautiful typeface Méridien. Président™ has wide, solid shapes; very little contrast between thick and thin strokes; and an air of assurance. Use this titling font for business cards, announcements, or artistic signage."

The term Old West conjures up memories of vintage movies and TV shows featuring saloons and dancehall girls. Old wanted posters and cowboys. Rowdy prospectors in the Goldrush, mountains and lots of wide open space. Many of the lettering styles of those days are still in use, reflecting the past, present, and probably the future here. Western style fonts appear in the signage of bars, restaurants, casinos and ski areas. It's a style that speaks of the way it once was in a nostalgic way. An Arabic font designed by a German living in Berlin’s Neukölln district, between Karl-Marx-Strasse and Sonnenallee. Stu is based on the penmanship of the late Raoul "Stu" Stuart. Raoul's penmanship was always admired by those who saw it; it was a first glimpse into the artistic and creative side of an otherwise easy-going, funny guy. The print variants exude a soft yet masculine feel, while the scripts evoke a sense of sentimentality and romance. Stu features dingbats which say something about Raoul: affectionate and romantic (heart), a big coffee drinker (coffee cup), a great cook (spoon and fork), a music lover (musical note), and a prankster (winking smiley). Once upon a time, in the days BC (that's Before Computers) there lived a very talented group of men and women whose job it was to render ads by hand. So skillful were these people that some say it was possible to actually identify the typefaces that the layout artists were emulating. Their renderings were swift and slick, no time for detail as it was necessary to do a whole bunch of variations, usually within ridiculous deadlines. Their only tools: bullet-tip markers and bond paper - often mistakes resulted but no time to re-do and white paint was totally unacceptable - just let the slipups be. Here's a simulation of their craft, we don't really know what typeface this was supposed to represent… any ideas?

Occam is an informal calligraphic script face. The letter forms were drawn and constructed rather than penned or brushed but reflect a definite flat pen influence. The ascenders and descenders incorporate an abstract implied loop form. Some curves that would normally be round are pointed and some transitions that would normally be sharp and pointed have been made round. A few exit strokes curve back instead of moving up and out for a little different look. This font could be put to good use as a contrasting style combined with sans and serif faces in applications such as newsletters, brochures, invitations and annual reports. It could be used for heads, subheads, pull quotes, drop caps and as a title font for covers.

Latvian designer and educator Gustav Grinbergs created Stencil Moonlight as an attempt to slightly lighten up the stencil type scene. Intended as a lively, semi-formal face, its shapes are smooth and compact. It leaves a very heavy feeling on the page, as its letters display a very fat bold design. Stencil Moonlight is available is two separate font styles, Regular and Small Caps. When used together, the Stencil Moonlight family can create the perfect combination for your next display need. Stencil Moonlight works best in larger sizes, where it is clear that its forms stem from an experiment with stencil design. Cell is a sturdy, geometric typeface with many potential applications. Though it is best suited to display sizes, its construction is simple enough for use in smaller settings. Its octagonal, almost mechanical design is softened by rounded corners. The face is characterized by a single thick stroke in each letter, lending it a unique appearance. It also features an oblique counterpart with several italic-style glyphs. Both members of the family also include small capitals mapped to the Private Use Area. Cell was designed to be at once simple and unique. Its grid-based structure is enhanced by slight adjustments for optical consistency. Glyphs which are normally round instead have 45-degree angles at the corners, sticking to the grid system without losing legibility.

Marita combines sternness with swing and, from this, develops its own, unique elegance. This makes Marita quite versatile, also and especially for headline settings. Apart from numerous ligatures, the font also includes old style figures. Marita is based on brush writing with drop-shaped serifs. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Manuel and Martin fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

Warning: works with contextual alternate-feature, which is not showing here. Covergirl is a script typeface that works all by itself. It has a very high contrast, but works also in smaller sizes. It is a display typeface. Covergirl is based on handwriting. The basic shapes are transformed to a very high contrast strict form and the hairline runs through the words in an amusing lively way that simulates the writing by hand. Its scandinavian designed handwriting, decorated, but also very minimalistic. While writing the letters will be substituted by one of the variations of the letter, that will make sure that the letters connect well. When writing in only UPPERCASE a much more simple letter shape will substitute the default.

PF DaVinci Script Pro is based on DaVinci’s own handwriting. He is considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. This great Italian artist left us with a unique writing (used to write from right to left), which we attempted to decode and simplify with PF Da Vinci Script Pro. Many of these letters are free interpretations and do not stick to the original forms. This typeface comes in 2 different styles: Regular and a more informal style called Inked. Heer Halewijn (The Song of Lord Halewijn) is a 13th century Dutch folk tale which survives in folk ballad. The story tells of a man called Halewijn, who lives in the woods and who lures pretty women with his songs (whom he then kills). One day a princess visits Halewijn, but when he wants to kill her, she requests he remove his robe, so as not to stain it with her blood. He obliges and when he is undressing, the princess seizes his sword and chops off his head. Halewyn is a handmade font, which was loosely based on my Languedoc font and Garamond. Use it for product packaging, books and posters. Comes in 4 weights (with italics) and a ballad full of diacritics.

Probably everyone living in Europe has heard of the (in)famous Route Du Soleil. The Route Du Soleil (Motorway Of The Sun) is a stretch of road from Paris to Lyon (in the south). It is THE route holiday makers take to reach southern France, so they can get there before everyone else does. The result: endless traffic jams, overheated engines and people and more toxic exhaust fumes than your average petroleum distillery. Route Du Soleil is also a very nice hand written font that comes with swashes and ligatures.
