Marketing Strategy JNL was inspired by some display signage used in an episode of the classic "Alfred Hitchcock Hour". Evoking the early-60s feel of kitchy advertising, this display font has a limited character set and is specifically designed for creating retro ad banners and point-of-sale attention getters as well as period piece signage. Bocksay Mira is a text font family inspired by the manuscript Mira Caligraphiae Monumenta created between 1561 and 1596 by Georg Bocskay and Joris Hoefnagel for the Holy Roman Emperor. All shapes were taken from the original records in both regular and italic style: lower case (p. 5, 72), uppercase (p. 47, 121), small caps (p. 122, 7). The high contrast forms and the wide spacing makes this family suitable for long texts but also for titling uses, having always that calligraphic and stylish look. Find the original script here

The Delima font family has something of the Clarendon or Ionic influence but is distinguished by a lighter serif treatment. The contrast between thick and thin strokes is not pronounced, weight stress is vertical. Delima's serifs are short but strong, allowing close letter spacing to give good economy. Lowercase x-height is very generous, internal counters are open. This combines to give Delima excellent legibility in small sizes and an overall even colour when set in text. Delima works well for magazines, periodicals and display work in advertising, flyers and catalogues.

Roman-style stencil fonts have been around for much longer than most people realize - from the interlocking brass stencils of the 1880s to the laser-cut plastic stencils of today. A 1 inch Roman lettering guide [die-cut from oil board with spacing holes for correct alignment] made by the now-defunct Zipatone Corporation in the 1970s was a clone of an existing design of another company; but with variations in certain character shapes. This then became the working model for Classroom Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Manual is an 80 font super family formed of 10 weights in 4 different widths. The font is styled with a slight retro feel to give it a unique appearance. The Ehrhardt name indicates that this typeface is derived from the roman and italic typefaces of stout Dutch character that the Ehrhardt foundry in Leipzig showed in a late-seventeenth-century specimen book. The designer is unknown, although some historians believe it was the Hungarian Nicholas Kis. Monotype recut the typeface for modern publishers in 1937 to 1938. Ehrhardt has a clean regularity and smooth finish that promote readability, as well as a slight degree of condensation, especially in the italic, that conserves space. Ehrhardt is a fine text face, especially for books.

This family was inspired by the set of fonts used in Paris by Ponce Rosset, aka “Faucheur” to print the account of the second voyage to Canada by Jacques Cartier, first edition, in 1545. It is a Garalde set, the punchcutter is unknown, certainly it was not Garamond himself. In our two styles (normal and italic), fontfaces, kernings and spaces are scrupulously the same as in the original. This Pro font covers Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic) Baltic and Turkish, with standard and long-s ligatures in each of the two styles.

Roag is an industrial geometric sans paying homage to mechanical designs of the 1930s. A precise balance of modern geometrics, with a functional yet sparing style that effectively communicates without distraction. Roag is a straightforward, unadorned type family with efficient construction. Details include seven weights with matching italics and over 950 characters per style. Opentype features consist of eight variations of numerals, including inferiors, superiors, fractions, case figures and circled figures. Additional features include small caps, case-sensitive forms, stylistic alternates, ligatures, game symbols, arrows and language support covering Western, South, Central Europe and Vietnamese.

MVB Peccadillo is an interpreted revival of a metal typeface popular in the 19th Century, then known as Skeleton Antique. Highly condensed with extra short descenders, the face makes a big impact in a narrow space. Holly Goldsmith worked from letterpress-printed specimens of 96-point, antique metal type, deliberately retaining subtle distortions due to type wear and letterpress impression. Alan Dague-Greene, referring to printed samples of Skeleton Antique, adapted the design to create two additional optical sizes: “Eight” for smaller text and “Twenty-four” for subheads.

The inspiration for AlbertBetenbuch came from a typeface drawn by Albert Dürer and an interpretation of that face in Arthur Baker’s Historic Calligraphic Alphabets (Dover, 1980). It is not a recreation of either. The characteristic common to AlbertBetenbuch and the faces inspiring it is the decorative zig-zag with the upper-case letters. In late 2018 the inside of the shadowed style was separated out. It looks very much like the plain face but its spacing matches the shadowed version. It can be layered with the shadowed version to easily create two-colored letters.

Urbane is a versatile all-purpose sans-serif family of six weights plus italics. It explores the same idea-space as early geometric modernist sans such as Futura, Erbar, Spartan and Elegant Sans, with a single-story a, a contemporary high x-height and very slightly condensed bowls. Perfect for headlines and running text, it is clear, classic and authoritative. Unusually for a geometric moderne sans, letter-widths are optically balanced, giving an even colour in setting. Includes a full international character set, lining, tabular and old-style numerals.

The BrightIdeas family contains two novelty fonts that have letters on light bulbs. The fonts have some characters on standing bulbs and some on hanging bulbs and these two sets are made to alternate with the OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature. To use only one set of bulbs, this feature must be turned off and character spacing adjusted. The family contains a style with clear bulbs and one with filled bulbs. They can be used in layers to add color. Both are monospaced. The characters on the bulbs are derived from the font Myhota-Bold.

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is the tree of life, which grows right into heaven - maybe even space! It has deep roots, which grows into three different worlds. I made this font in hope that someone with a love to Norse mythology could use it - maybe even for something viking themed! I don’t think that the gods of Norse mythology ever heard of contextual alternates or multilingual support - but I added it, without even asking! - Yggdrasil has 5 different versions of each letter (in both Regular and Rough) and supports loads of different languages!

This variation of Tangential (see also the Standard & Semi Serif variants) continues with the angles that give the typeface its name; however, the square terminals are half-rounded to create a softer and slightly more fluid styling. The Tangential style I envisaged for the family is complemented by the prominent use of negative space throughout, most apparent on the drop-shaped ‘o,’ which is a key feature of the typeface and a letterform I'm particularly pleased with. Available in 2 weights, Regular & Bold, in both OpenType OTF & TrueType TTF formats.

Ingone is a slightly irregular sans-serif face. It was designed to complement PattyDay and HeyPumpkin, but can be used alone if you need an informal, friendly sans-serif font. It has only one weight, but the family includes a shadowed style. In 2018 the inside of the shadowed version was separated out and made a separate typeface. The letters have the shapes of the regular version but the spacing of the shadowed version and can be layered with the shadowed version to easily produce lettering with two colors.

This typeface is a new and improved (really!) version of one of my most popular freeware fonts, Team Spirit, which has made appearances in the Tank McNamara comic strip and on Blue Collar TV. Add the “nose” at the front with an open parenthesis -(- and add the tail with a close parenthesis -). To continue the bar beneath between words, use the _underscore in place of a space. No math operators and limited punctuation, but complete accented characters for the Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Mafuta is a round, happy font, named for the Zulu word for "fat". In tribal societies in Africa, where food was often scarce and almost never easily come by, it was considered desirable to appear "well fed". Roundness was a symbol of high status in the tribe, and a sign of wealth. The up-beat, bold outline of the font celebrates the confidence of people who feel comfortable being who they are. The font manages to be both contemporary and African. It is best used for posters and for headings.

The Xavier family of typefaces is based on the delightful deco typeface called Ashley Crawford, originally designed in 1930 by Ashley Havinden. After designing Xavier Black (Serif) and Xavier Sans Black, I added Bold Sans, Medium and Medium Sans and finally added lowercase to the medium weights. Although more manageable than Ashley Crawford, Xavier, due to its very playful nature (splayed A, M, etc.) needs to be used with care, especially in terms of spacing. Xavier is a playful typeface and I have been particularly pleased to see it used in children's books.

Loosely based on Bembo and Plantin, the Perrywood font family retains some old style characteristics which give the face a familiar feel, however much attention has been paid to optimizing the design to give good quality output at small point sizes and from low resolution output devices. The consistency of character shapes allows close letter spacing to give compact word shapes, excellent word recognition and an overall economy in text. Perrywood offers good legibility and, coupled with an even text color will be very useful for text setting, in correspondence, for faxes and reports.

Burdigala is a clean-cut, modern yet classic typeface inspired by Didones and Aicher’s Rotis family. The Semi Serif is ideal for larger amounts of (printed) texts in brochures, magazines and books. It is slighty narrow in order to conserve space, but spacious enough to faciliate reading and overall clarity. The expanded versions of the semi serif, being wider and more open, works equally well in media intended both for print and on-screen reading, e.g. in Pdf-documents etc. Burdigala is the ancient Roman name of the city of Bordeaux France.

An online reproduction of a trade ad circa the 1950s for comedian-actor Paul Gilbert featured his name in the hand-drawn lettering that serves as the basis for Stand Up JNL. While the style of the typeface is derivative of the Latin Spur faces used popularly since the 1800s, the playful – almost awkward angles create a casual design that evokes good times. It should be noted that the extremes of such angles might appear ill-spaced unless kerning is turned on within the application where the typeface will be used.

Hoxton North came out of the concept to create something distinctly British, drawing on modernist influences such as Edward Johnston's typeface for the London Underground and Gill Sans. A humanistic san serif typeface with a British modern quality. Open forms with subtle contrast promote good readability across a wide range of media in both print and screen. The compact letterforms give it a strong lateral dynamic that is space efficient across design layouts. Details include 620 characters, seven weights with true italics, small caps, manually edited kerning and Opentype features.

Inspired by a dark techno typography design style which tends to utilize space of a module. Designed for headlines, titling, large-format prints and posters. Huben is a wide extended width based, dense kern, a strong of a structures and heavy looks, make it more loud and on-point type of impression. Matched with basic sans serif typefaces as a body copy. Available regular and italic in standard and outlined version of styles with multi languages support. Ligatures, stylistic alternates, and some stuff like icons and symbols are added.

Copyman is an experimental one for the creative ones. Monumental & minimalistic, great for the contemporary & urban design, this font is a good choice for confident branding & logotypes as well as for brutal or futuristic interfaces. Copyman’s title is an anagram for a Company. First of all, this font was created for branding purposes of businesses, who want something as practical as a little bit different from what they already get used to. This chamfered typeface contains 8 styles, Regular & Italic, both Cyrylic & Latin, 287 glyphs, 8256 pairs, 119 groups, has well–balanced kerning & clever spacing.

A mid-1950s hand lettered ad for Stenso Lettering Guides provided the inspiration for Stencil Company JNL, now available in both regular and oblique versions. The Stenso Lettering Company of Baltimore, Maryland pioneered easy-to-use and inexpensive lettering devices with guide holes for accurate spacing. Originally designed by a school teacher (Ruth Libauer Hormats) around 1940, the company was family run until it was sold in 1962 to Ottenheimer Publishers. They in turn sold the line to the Dennison Manufacturing Company, and it was discontinued in the 1980s after Dennison merged with Avery.

Erich Fehrle designed this robust alphabet for headlines and titles in 1976. The constructed figures of Linotype Fehrle Display were built on the geometric form of the rectangle. Lines of text look closed and compact. The letter forms are the result of fine open spaces. Design-specific characteristics of Linotype Fehrle Display are its serif-like additions to the strokes of the figures a, c, G or M, and the alternating rounded and angular outlines of the figures a, e, s and others. My 9-year old son Sam asks a lot (a LOT!) of questions. Like: ‘what killed the dinosaurs?’ (probably an asteroid), ‘what is the distance to Pluto’ (about 7.5 billion km), ‘how big is space’ (93 billion lightyears - give or take). I am pretty sure he asked me about gravity as well. Gravitational Pull is a messy pencil script font. It comes with a whole bunch of double-letter ligatures and some really wonky glyphs. And no, in its virtual form, this font is not subject to the Earth’s gravitational pull.

Commercial Script is a sophisticated copperplate script design. Its capitals are elaborate initials, and the lowercase letters join together in the style of real handwriting. Commercial Script's elegant refinement makes it a classic and ever-popular typeface. The spark behind this typeface comes from centries-old English Spencerian copperplate calligraphy. In 1985, the American typefoundry Barnhart Brothers & Spindler released a typeface in this style. This was redesigned by ATF's Morris Fuller Benton in 1906, and ATF released Commercial Script" in 1908. In 1994, Letraset' released this digital version of the typeface."

CamingoDos SemiCondensed fills the gap between CamingoDos and CamingoDos Condensed and combines them to a homogeneous and versatile type family. The flexibility of the semi-condensed version makes it a typographic all-rounder. On the one hand CamingoDos SemiCondensed is perfectly suited for compact headline settings. On the other hand, it works well as an ergonomic, space-saving typeface for large texts. One of the odder things I remember from high school (50+ years ago) is the tile floor of hexagons in the bathroom. There is something fascinating with the way hexagons fill the plane. BakerHalfDozen is made of white letters that fit on black, hexagonal tiles. BakerHalfWhite switches the letters to black on white tiles, and BakerHalfBare eliminates the tiles. There are no true lower-case letters, but some letters have alternate shapes. To make the tiles line up right, alternate lines must be indented half a space. Use the {} characters (brackets) to do this.

The rustic lettering which also served as the model for Grist Mill JNL is the basis for Gristwood JNL. Another set of vintage wood type has the letters reversed out of blocks, making for a specialty titling font. Decorative end caps are located on the greater and less than keys and also on the plus and equal keys. A blank block for regular word spacing is on the underscore key, along with a wider blank box on the backslash key. This typeface has a somewhat limited character set.
