Gundrada ML was inspired by the lettering on the tomb of Gundrada de Warenne. She was buried at Southover Church at Lewes, Sussex, in the south of England in 1085. The Latin inscription on her tomb, STIRPS GUNDRADA DUCUM, meaning “Gundrada, descendant of the Duke” may have led to the speculation that she was the daughter of William, Duke of Normandy and bastard son of Robert the Devil of Normandy and Arletta, daughter of a tanner in Falaise. In 1066 William defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned William I of England. More commonly known as William the Conquerer, he commissioned a string of forts around the kingdom and charged trusted Norman Barons to control the contentious Anglo-Saxon population. William de Warenne, husband of Gundrada, was one of these Barons. There has also been the suggestion that Gundrada may have been the daughter of William’s wife, Matilda of Flanders, by a previous marriage. According to the Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press, Oxford, England 1921-22), both of these contentions are in dispute. Searching the past of a thousand years ago is like wandering in a heavy fog: facts are only dimly in view. Regardless, I know that I found these letterforms immediately engaging in their simplicity. Unadorned and unsophisticated, they have a direct honesty that rests well in the company of humanistic sans serifs like Franklin Gothic or Gill Sans, appealing to a contemporary sensibility. The lettering on the tomb is in upper case only. Although Gundrada does not sound Norman French to me, her husband certainly and her father probably were Norman French. Nonetheless, the man that carved her tombstone was probably Anglo-Saxon, like most of the people. For that reason, we are quite comfortable with a fairly generic lower case from an Anglo-Saxon document of the time. The time was a time of transition, of contending language influences. Fontoddler Font Family, This font was created with the personality, in mind, of my two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter Chloe Bella. For the font design project, I had decided to make a typeface which would reflect the style architectural of Zaha Hadid. My purpose was the presentation of a font to her as Zaha Hadid was alive during my project process. But nearly at the end of the project we unfortunately received the death news of her. Her life wasn't long enough to see the project completed.

On the sheet music cover of the 1931 song "When the Autumn Leaves of Life Begin to Fall", the title is hand-lettered using a round tipped nib pen. The combination of both an Art Deco lettering style and the rounded ends of the characters creates an exquisite, yet simple type design digitally preserved as Deco Roundpoint JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

In the MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan type specimen book of 1892 are examples of Lining Gothic Extended, a wide sans serif typeface. A lining font has the numerals aligned with the capital letter height, rather than following the “Old Style” method of smaller figures that could also descend below the baseline. ITC Photoplay is another gem from Nick Curtis. Unearthed from the 1927 edition of Samuel Welo's Studio Handbook for Artists and Advertisers, the design's original suggested use was for title and caption cards for silent movies. A monoweight design that bridges the gap between turn-of-the-century decorative type and Art Deco, ITC Photoplay is both casual and stylish. And, yes, the cap S" is supposed to look that that. To expand this already handy typeface's versatility, a Black weight has been added to the original design. Curtis has also created an array of alternate characters, a couple of conjunctions, and a handful of "bishop's fingers" to help make your point. ITC Photoplay is eminently suitable for all those occasions when you need to say, "Unhand that fair damsel, you dastardly cad!", and really mean it."

Cordel Interior family draws inspiration from covers of 'cordel literature’, - small booklets of popular story-poems that played an essential role on the folk-popular cultural life of Brazil. Printed in coarse paper, usually with an woodcut illustration and lettering in the front, these booklets were sold on the streets, in marketplaces and town squares, hung in a cord - therefore the name ‘cordel’.

Gaudí ND was designed in 1962 by Ricard Giralt Miracle and awarded with a Delta d’Or from ADIFAD. It combines the constructive spirit of the lapidary Roman with the modern sans serif. The rectangular endings constitute a recurring rhythm, resulting in a futuristic character that refers to a digital context and the interior life of computers. Gaudí is a Trademark of BauerTypes SL.

On a cold winter's night, George Ryan, of Galápagos Design Group, began musing on the possibilities for a “truly original” sans serif typeface. What came out of his musing, and his always-present sketchpad, was ITC Adderville, a typeface whose visual impact is immediate and strong. Ryan explains how he did it: “The rounded ends of its strokes and their skewed baseline contact create an illusion of dancing feet. The tops of lowercase stems emit serif buds, suggesting transition into or out of the serifed form. Building a modular digital typeface is like playing with the pieces of a Lego. Possible combinations are induced by the shapes of the pieces. All designers must have tried something like this once. Bitmap is a simple unpretentious font. It is the first pixel font made by the Brazilian typeface designer Buggy in 2001.

Betula is the scientific name for Birch - I probably don’t have to explain that birches are my favourite trees! They always look like the ghosts of the forest with their papery white bark and dark blotches. Betula is a rough, crayon-like font. Very legible with a childlike appearance. Comes with a forest of diacritics.

Spinat is spinach in danish. I like all kinds of things with spinach: salads, lasagne, fish, burgers and even with spinach! Yes, I love spinach so much I can eat it without anything else! :) I hope you too like spinach or even Spinat - it has 5 different versions of each letter and multilingual support.

This is a blocky typeface with thick lines and no serifs. It's a modern design with a hint of vintage lettering with a thicker vertical line on one side of each letter. Most letters are square shaped. The two styles are regualar and hollow, with the hollow style having the thicker areas hollowed out.

The lettering for Fine Dining JNL was inspired by the opening titles for the 1940 Barbara Stanwyck-Fred MacMurray film "Remember the Night". A stylized Art Deco sans, the typeface conjures up images of elegant dining, being out on the town and all we warmly associate with the night life of the 1930s and 1940s.

Lettering on a vintage bottle cap served as inspiration for MVB Pedestria. Akemi Aoki’s design is simple and legible, yet full of life, thanks to its loose, casual forms. Two sets of irreverent Pict fonts take characters from ubiquitous public restroom door symbology to a new level, providing playful pictograms for invitations, advertising, and infographics.

The inspiration of the name of the font comes from a song by Smashing Pumpkins, but the real reason why I named the font "Krooked Teeth" is that the font has got a crooked look to it, almost like crooked teeth! Furthermore I like the handwritten look. It works great in small sizes, but also loveable at large sizes! I replaced the 'C' with a 'K' in order to make it look more Danish. Just like my name: Jakob with a "'k" !
