ZX Spectrum In 1982, a home computer came on the market that would launch the UK IT industry. The ZX Spectrum sold five million units and spawned thousands of software titles. It was the must-have gadget for every teen. FS Sinclair is inspired by the memory of Sir Clive Sinclair’s greatest creation: the experience of entering its clunky command codes and reading its simple, grid-placed type. Smart, switched-on, great in text and display, FS Sinclair is a modern grid-based font, drawn with the Spectrum in mind and brought to life by well thought-out design. Formula Having completed the font for Channel 4’s brand update, the Fontsmith team defined the formula for its next font: the creative essence of the C4 work but with more structural discipline, more rigid form and a little more seriousness. The new font wouldn’t look self-consciously retro but it would reference the past and, it was hoped, influence the future. Readability Like the ZX Spectrum, it took a while for the new font to do exactly what it was meant to do. Many of the early concepts by Phil Garnham and Jason Smith were too jagged – the result of an awareness of getting too close to existing fonts of the same ilk, such as Wim Crouwel’s Gridnik. Eventually, FS Sinclair evolved into a more readable, functional grid-based type design that answered Phil and Jason’s original, self-set brief. Idiosyncratic There’s a technological, systems feel to FS Sinclair but ultimately, humans are in charge. The lowercase “a”, “n”, “m” and “r” have clean-cut “ears”, and the square-ish design is softened by round joins on the inside of the letterforms. The idiosyncratic design of letters such as “g”, “j”, “k”, “v”, “w” and “y” bring the design up to date. This is a modular font with character, and a range of weights that allow varied application.

BAQ Rounded sets itself up as a simplistic and blocky font, but it hides a deeper form. With indents in all the right places, this font creates a double image in our mind, of the form we see and the form we know, letters that bulge into blobs and letters that are easy to follow. Meet Haggis! Inspired by the Insular Half-Uncial and Uncial typefaces that have long been associated with Scotland, Ireland, and their Celtic cousins, Haggis is an unusual creature. Unlike traditional Uncials, he's monoline, rounded, sausagey, and distinctly lighthearted! Use him for posters, signage (especially pub signs!), kids' stuff, and packaging — anyplace a little quasi-Celtic flavor is desired, but with a fun twist. Must we say it? He's a Funcial! Tongue-in-cheek though he may be, Haggis has some great features. He comes in Lean and Overstuffed forms, and has full true small caps, standard(ish) Roman alternates for the more out-there characters, lots of ampersand forms (including a true[ish] "Et" and a Tironian and), fun quasi-Celtic bullets, and lots of ligatures. This is not a brush font! This is an imitation of brushstrokes, done by pen. But I guess you've already noticed that - the brushstrokes are way too obvious, to have been made by brush. Although being a "fake", the letters leaves you with quite a good impression. Letters were inspired by an old horror movie poster, but is very useful for something less terrifying!

A long-set aside Art Deco typeface design begun (but not completed) may or not have been from a vintage source, but its roots go well back into Art Deco lettering. Taking the existing letters and thickening their weights, removing the counters and ending up with a completely new, solid alphabet design resulted in Deco Redux JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

“Grendel Regular” Evolved out of a hand lettering piece I designed for a record album (Royal Crescent Mob). Inspired by old gothic forms, my intention was to create a playful letter form that could be used in an antique as well as a modern context such as food product packaging or fun video projects, etc.

Stonecut JNL is an adaptation of a novelty display face found in one of the Dan X. Solo lettering books. Resembling letters made from cut stone, both the inline and solid black versions are perfect for themes encompassing outdoors, the Stone Age, "macho" events or anything where an unpolished or rustic look can be adapted.

Bold and squared with rounded corners, the hand lettering found within the November, 1936 issue of Radio Mirror magazine really stands out. Opake™ is an experimental typeface design that steps away from regular design conventions. Instead of basing the design on a calligraphic tool or geometric shapes, Opake™ is the result of the exercise of creating letters with a single continuous loop line. This unseen technique makes the overall design very unique. Though unconventional, the design resonates with some familiarity because of its calligraphic stroke terminations and some shape decisions that might resemble Cooper Black. In the end Opake™ is a cutting edge non-connecting script font, with a warm and happy feeling. Ideal for large headlines and general display use, but also branding, posters and apparel. If you like unconventional solutions and edgy design, Opake is the font to go for.

SomaSkript is a natural extension to the basic Somatype font design, adding more variety to the family, all of which have similar features. Basically, by widening the uprights and maintaining the thin cross-bars it takes on more of a script-like quality, hence the name. Slanting the letters reinforces the script illusion and consequently brings a broader application to the font’s original format. When designing the Somatype alphabet originally, I always envisaged maximizing on its potential by creating an incised version. This variation not only emphasizes the implied script qualities within the name but brings out the softer, feminine side of the typeface. This evolutionary process creates a different looking font altogether and in turn the slanted version emphasizes the elegant quality even more so.

Cosmic Turtle is the belief that the world is supported by a giant turtle. It is mostly found in Hindu and Chinese mythology and the mythologies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. I had to think of this, as the idea of the Cosmic Turtle is referenced to in the 1982 book ‘A Wild Sheep Chase’ by Haruki Murakami - my favourite author. Cosmic Turtle is a font that I made using a broken chop stick and Chinese ink. I was actually trying to create something scary for Halloween, but this is what came out and I quite like it. Cosmic Turtle is a fat display font with rough edges, wobbly glyphs and a set of double letter ligatures for you to play with.

One of those magazines turned out to be about fashion. When I opened it on a random page, I saw beautiful pictures. But you know what the first thing that catches my eye? The font! The font in which the headline or quote is written. After you read it, you look at everything else. And I wondered what my font would be in this case. Patsy is a quirky sans-serif font inspired by the titling sequence from the 1964 film, "The Patsy", starring Jerry Lewis. Heavyweight, yet fun and full of personality, it was a lettering styles that was so much fun to flesh out and make into a typeface. I've opened up the letter spacing lightly from the original film poster design for better readability at a range of sizes. With an alternating all-caps character set, and offbeat letter weighting, Patsy is fun to typeset with as the font auto-switches between Capitals and Lowercase (alternate capitals) no matter if you type all caps or all lowercase.

Drawn by George Ryan and named after Robert Givens, the co-founder and first president of Monotype Imaging, the Givens Antiqua™ typeface speaks with elegance and subtle authority. The design's open proportions, generous x-height and soft serifs lend Givens Antiqua a gracious quality that invites reading. I didn't work from any single design model," Ryan recalls. "The face grew out of my experimenting with several characters from a hand-lettered headline in a magazine. I worked on the shapes and forms for some time before I put the drawings in a drawer." At that point Ryan had finished the basic alphabet in two weights, but had not yet tackled the italics. A new project came along that demanded his full attention, and it was two years before he revisited the drawings. He liked what he saw and decided to finish the job. "The italics were the most problematic designs in the family," says Ryan, "but once I had their basic shapes and proportions, the rest was basically a production project." Another year of sketching, testing, editing and reworking characters ensued before Givens Antiqua was ready for release. The result is a four-weight family of roman designs and small caps, with complementary italics for the lightest three weights and a suite of swash caps for the italic designs. Givens Antiqua and Givens Antiqua Light show a modest stroke weight stress and a light, even text color. Givens Antiqua Bold is an effective emphasizer for text copy and an authoritative communicator at display sizes. The Black weight performs best at large sizes and makes a powerful statement without shouting, while the italic swash capitals possess enough vitality to serve as standalone initial letters."

CA Capoli is a fine script typeface with a vintage touch. Perfect for illustrative titles or logotypes. It comes in two styles, Regular and Stroke. The inspiration came during our trip to Italy, where we took a short rest in a bar during a hot day. We discovered a simple ceramic ashtray on the table. The word “Nido” was inscribed in a typeface that looked like it dated back to the 1950s. We made some investigations about the word, its meaning and origin but it still remains a big mystery. Was it the name of a hotel or a restaurant or some vintage Italian cigarettes? We don’t know. We were so amazed about the design of the logo that we decided to create a typeface out of it. A sophisticated endeavor because we just had four letters. How could the rest of the letters – if it ever existed – have looked like? Our hypothesis is CA Capoli. A typeface with a full Central European character set and some nice alternative letters to chose from. When we thought about “Nido” and its possible derivation of hotel business, we felt like creating a small side project for this typeface, a brand for a fictional hotel called Hotel Capoli with business cards, letterheads, a reception book, key fobs and embroidered patches for the service dress of the hotel service stuff. The Hotel Capoli is located at the wonderful beach of Cape Arcona on the fictional country of Arcona Islands where our type foundry is located.
