Decutto is a neo-grotesque that packs the Marionette formula and some blackletter ideas into a low-contrast sans serif design. Its name plays on the phrases “off cut” and “cut to” which express the key feature – the contemporary legible letter shape is decorated with cut carved edges and counters, giving the typeface crisp and simplistic look, like that of an old minted coin. Penitentiary Gothic is a digital recreation of the letters used on California state license plates, designed in order to make props for movies and television shows. The regular style is meant to be used on its own, but the other four styles are meant to be used one on top of another in different colors to create an embossed 3D effect. For best results, use the fill style in a dark color on top of a light colored background. Put the lolite style directly on top of the fill style in 10 - 30% of the background color. Put the hilite style directly on top of that in 10 - 30% of your fill color. Put the shadow style directly on top of that using your background color plus 50 - 80% black.

Mentone is a new general purpose typeface, an attempt at extending the line of the great sans-serifs of the previous century, Frutiger - Stone Sans - Myriad. The font has round corners and subtle chamfers, which are all but invisible at text sizes, but add an upbeat, irreverent expression at display sizes. The typeface is named after the beautiful bayside suburb of Melbourne, Australia, where the designer lives. This new version (2.01) was spaced and kerned by Igino Marini of iKern. Stanzer is an interpretation of wood type combined with the idea of modern stencils. Instead of cutting every letter, we are presenting an example of how a modern stencil typeface could look like, as we have come to the conclusion that almost every letter works without cutting it. Stanzer is a Unicase typeface, available in three OpenType weights: Black, Shadow and Block. Stanzer first started as part of our diploma 2010 (it was called Stanley at that time). The basic idea behind this typeface is that it is fully stencil usable, and, unlike other stencil fonts, does not require any bridges (except for the O and Q). Almost every letter can be sprayed without inserting planks. However, Stanzer also offers the display weight Block, which is only suitable for print or online usage.

The Cholla typeface family was designed by Sibylle Hagmann in 1998-99 and named after a species of cactus she encountered in the Mojave Desert. Cholla was originally developed for the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. There, art director Denise Gonzales Crisp and associate designer, Carla Figueroa, collaborated with Hagmann to create a series of fonts that would offer a great deal of variation. The variety was needed to echo the school's nine different departments, yet together the fonts had to exude a unified feel. It was first used in the radically designed 1999/2000 Art Center catalog which won a honorable mention in I.D. magazine and was featured in Eye No. 31. Originally Hagmann set out to design a typeface that, as she recalls, "I could feel comfortable making, first of all, and one that would serve a purpose and had a clear idea behind it, and something that I would want to use myself." Stylistically Hagmann set out to create "12 cuts with slightly different personalities, with different ideas applied. For example the bold weight isn't simply the Regular with weight gain, but has bold letterforms with their own peculiar details. What all weights share and what is the necessary unifying detail is the tapered curve - marked out, for example, in the lowercase b's left top and bottom of the bowl." Gonzales adds: "The forms seemed classical as well. This combination could have a long life, and be timely. I also saw - at least in the beginnings of Cholla - forms that connoted hybrid, of inter-connection, of human and machine growing together. Shesek is an informal, loose, handwritten font without any frills. It is deceivingly plain, but when you use it, you will find out that Shesek has a distinct taste, not unlike its namesake, the Japanese plum, or Loquat. The Loquat is a soft, oval, yellow fruit which is grown mostly in Japan and Israel (where it is called ‘Shesek’).

A style of die-cut cardboard letters and numbers used for signs, displays and show cards was the basis for Haute Couture JNL, an Art-Deco flavored typeface from Jeff Levine. Road Stencil is a font based on painted street markings. The letters are stretched roughly six times their normal height so that when viewed from an angle, the text is seen as proportional. If you're looking to Photoshop a street scene, this is your font. This is an all caps font, but the letters were copied to lower-case for convenience. In these forms, I've preferred to use horizontal and diagonal dividers instead of verticals which can weaken the fonts readability. This font embodies a pleasant aesthetic while maintaining a coherent and believable feel. Check out the 'Rough' version of this font, which has more of a 'drawn on asphalt' look. The rough version's lower case letters have eroded alternates.

I happened to mention to the proprietor of an antique barn near here that I'd be interested in any old typewriters she happened to come across. A conversation ensued, the proprietor withdrew into a back room, and she re-emerged with an old handwritten letter, dated 18 Sept. 1825 and spanning nearly three pages. The letter, penned by Samuel Clarke, a Princeton, Mass., pastor, sought donations for the victims of an accident at sea. I thought his script unique, stylistic, and definitely something worth digitizing, so I bought the old letter and took it home. Had to come up with several uppercase characters to round out the set, but the results seem good and proper. Full release has complete character set.

Bakery Script is the Argentine duo's nod to the high spirits of the 1970s. Angel Koziupa used his ever popular wild brush to draw the outline version, and Alejandro Paul refined it, expanded it, then extrapolated the solid version. While the outline version makes the letters seem like they're growing out of each other's shadows, the solid version presents a wilder version of the casual dancing letters Koziupa's brush has entertained us with during recent years. Sharp in places, perfectly curved in others, and with many letter alternates and ligatures included within the fonts, Bakery Script would be at home in packaging design, outdoors and adventure literature, and everywhere a display design needs that sharp but friendly touch to reach its goal.

ITC Ironwork is the work of Serge Pichii, who was inspired by a piece of decorative lettering done by Jan Tschichold in the early 1920s. Tschichold had interlocked a series of rough sans serif letters and embellished them with scattered decorative elements. The original was of only capital letters, touching and overlapping like an ironwork gate made of letters. Pichii completed the typeface with lowercase forms and smoothed the edges. The scrolls of the capitals were extended to the lowercase and Pichii based them on iron scrollwork he found in Vienna and Prague. A lot of attention was paid to the elements of the typeface in order to 'smooth out' and balance proportional relations between the elements," says Pichii. To design Mr Black, we used old ('70-'80) dry transfer lettering sheets that were used by my grandfather who was a military cartographer. We had only two almost used-up sheets. The letters didn't transfer so well but we liked the way they were damaged. All of the characters have a very high resolution so they can be used in a large scale. Mr Black doesn't have lowercases but has up to three alternate uppercase for each letter. Checkout Mr Tiger if your looking for lowercase letters with the same distortion effect. When Baka and Baka Too did very well commercially (Baka was named the Best Cursive Rough Script in 2005), I shied away from doing rough, handwritten scripts in fear as being seen as a one-trick-pony. A few years have passed and some early sumi-e brush ‘doodles’ kept appealing to me. I initially thought this new font would just fall under the Baka mantle and just become a new sibling, but as brush hit paper over and over again, the letters took on a different personality from Baka. This new font was turning out to be far more expressive, smooth and rough, tasty but sticky. This dichotomy demanded a new name. The rough and smooth texture suggested the name Fugu—oddly delicate while rough and functional.

Terpentijn is Dutch for Turpentine. If you say it out loud, it actually sounds quite similar! Here you thought you were just buying a font, but you get to learn some Dutch too! Terpentijn is a handmade typeface with a serious twist. It is very uneven, very unusual, and, if I may say so myself, very adorable. Terpentijn has that ‘eroded’ look, which will make your designs stand out. It comes in a regular and an inline version, plus a handy shapes pack, which will add that extra wow to your work. Besides Dutch, terpentijn speaks a lot of languages!

Stamen is the answer to a big question: What would happen if one tried to create a typeface that was ‘out of time’? If a type designer was to turn off the internet and put away the type specimens and just try to explore limbic, phantom history, what might that look like? No slavish explorations of the past. No gropings toward the future. No exhaustive core sample of the contemporary. Instead, using what one remembers of history and our collective vision of the future (usually a future imagined from the past) and channeling that into something that is, hopefully, new… The Bentons meet Frutiger for a Manhattan on a space station while Matthew Carter sways to the sweet sounds of the chorale that occasionally played through the halls of Stephenson Blake. This smear of implicit history expressed without explicit reference—this is Stamen: a family of 12 typefaces with a ton of alternate characters. The bold weight was designed for the LP “I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler” ( http://ittfwbc.com/ ) by the band YACHT in response to their request for a typeface that was ‘lost in time’, and refers to neither strict historical models nor purely futuristic forms. I built a small family out from there. It works well in text, but just as well for display setting. I think you’ll enjoy using it.

Mein Schatz's (in English: Darling) characteristic feature is the availability of ligatures in the expert set. The font offers – among others – the ligatures sh, sp, st, tz and alternatives for f, l and z. The expert set’s majuscules have curved elements in addition, thus allowing designers to put the typeface to highly individualistic use for displays and logos. Another feature of the font are the two different figure systems. Further to the normal table figures, Mein Schatz also offers old style figures, mainly for use in continuous text. Table figures as well as old style figures are available in all four cuts, i.e. regular, bold, italic and bolditalic. Furthermore designers will enjoy the additional curved ornaments. The curved ornaments and ligatures don’t only add a playful character to the typeface but also hence the name.
