Soon after the introduction of webfonts, I began to see Insigne's Le Havre used frequently for web headlines, not so much for its Art Deco look as for its more compact proportions. There seemed to be a need for a font that was designed to be used solely for the web's unique constraints. Enter Coegit Sans. Coegit is built specifically for web applications. Its highly Condensed forms range from thin--offering the greatest number of uses--to the attractive, accenting black. With three widths--Compressed, Compact, and the widest, Condensed --the family holds a total of sixteen fonts. A mediterranean style sanserif in 4 styles The original idea of Costa was to create a contemporary mediterranean typeface style. Costa is a synthesis of the purity, as found on Greek capitals, and softness, found in Renaissance scripts. First thing was the design concept that take its roots on the Chancery script. Such writing style appeared during Italian Renaissance. Later few typefaces have been developed from such cursive models. Today most serifed typeface italic take their roots on such triangular structure we can find on gylphs like the n, p, or d. The Costa capitals remains close to pure sanserif models when the lowercases features an ending serif on many letters like the a, n, d, etc. This ending serif being more like a minimal brush effect, creating a visual contrast and referencing the exoticness of the typeface. Knowing that the Costa typeface family began life in the 90s as a bespoke typeface for Costa Crociere, an Italian cruise company — it suddenly makes sense and explains well why Jean François Porchez focused so much on Italian Chancery mixed to a certain exotism. The curvy-pointed terminals of the Costa n can obviously get find on other glyphs, such as the ending of the e, c and some capitals. So, the sanserif looks more soft and appealing, without to be to pudgy or spineless. The general effect, when set for text, remains a sanserif, even not like Rotis Semiserif. Costa is definitly not a classical typeface, or serif typeface which convey past, tradition, historicism as Garamond does beautifully. Because of the Costa crocieres original needs, Costa typeface was designed to be appropriate for any uses. Anytime you’re looking for good mood, qualitative effects, informal tone, cool atmosphere without to be unconvential or blowzy, Costa will convey to your design the required chic and nice atmosphere, from large headlines sizes, brands, to small text sizes. It’s a legible typeface, never boring. A style without neutrality which doesn’t fit comfortably into any typeface classification! Barcelona trip Originally not planned, this need appeared because of a trip to Barcelona at the time of the project, where Jean François was giving a lecture. He wanted to pay an homage to that invitation to create something special. So, he designed during his flight some variations of the Spanish Ch, following ideas developed by the Argentinian type designer Rubén Fontana for his typeface called Fontana ND (published by the Barcelona foundry Bauer). Another of my hand drawn originals now digitized. It started out as a very bold, decorative initial capital letter - a 'font within a font' - but got extended to the full alphabet.

Exo Soft. Technology meets humanity. The geometric design got organic with carefully crafted smoothed edges. Exo Soft is a contemporary sans-serif font with a warm and humane feeling. It has an extended language support (both in Latin and Cyrillic) and an handful set of Opentype features. The 9 weights plus correspondent italics give Exo Soft a huge versatility. Because aesthetics are not everything Exo Soft was fine tuned in order to perform well both in screen and in print. Karisans is a hand drawn, layerable sans serif font. By layering the various styles differently the user can achieve many different effects.

Since I designed Mommie you can see a lot of script typefaces with big contrast for big sizes. With Narziss I created a roman interpretation with the very expressive Swirls version. Glenda is again an italic script like Mommie. In the Regular the characters join and it looks like a neatly written sprencerian handwriting. But like Narziss it has got a Swirls version too. Every glyph and swirl is carefully designed to work in every connection. Use Glenda at only very large sizes.

Need to cram a zillion words on to a single page? Nicotine is your vice. Cram it. Nicotine Jazz is a bit more musical as it trades uppercase and lowercase letters for an interesting unicase effect. Italic can be used for extra emphasis. The condensed nature of the Nicotine fonts allows for impressive use at larger, poster sizes. Another interesting tidbit? The I in Nicotine is a silhouette of a traditional filtered cigarette; that's how the font got its name.

Houschka Alt Pro is a carbon copy of the Houschka Pro family with one key difference: the rounded signature glyphs A & W on the default positions swap places with their straight alternates. Houschka was named after Georg Houschka, a sadly defunct confectioner’s shop in Salzburg, Austria, which had a wonderful 1930s frontage and distinctively rounded letterforms in the sign above the door. The first photo-typesetting machine in operation, the Uhertype, was introduced in 1925. It was a combination of manual phototypesetting machine and make-up machine. The machine’s typefaces were designed by Jan Tschichold. The patents on Uhertype were bought up at the time to prevent the invention of filmsetting spreading. Jan Tschichold has been very influenced by Gill Sans (1928) for this humanistic sans serif drawn in 1933/36 for Uhertype.
