Looking back on my production to date, neither so little nor so large, it does not come as a surprise to find myself now introducing Lady René. A brief review of my career would read as follows: graphic designer graduated from Buenos Aires University, a 10-year professorship in Typography in the same institution, an illustrator in the making. For almost 15 years now my work has focused on the design of editorial pieces, predominantly books and CD sleeves. Typography proper has always been central to my research projects. All my obsessions eventually embodied as much the search for a perfect, spotless text as for a daring and provoking one. In my view, "how-to-say-something" ranks highest amongst a graphic designer’s responsibilities. It was in this vein that I called in the written word to illustrate, to draw, to narrate. Why not reverse the saying and proclaim that “a word is worth a thousand images”? If so, one single word could trigger endless meanings, associations, ideas, and memories in every reader’s mind. Language, we know, has a strong power and is a living expression of a culture. In my illustrations, letters and drawings reunite in one synergy said and unsaid, the finiteness of the message and the freedom of the free reading. And this is how and when, Lady René, my first born type font sees the light of day conceived out of a love of illustration and a reverence for the written word, recalling the whimsicality of the handmade drawing and reflecting its sensitive, warmth and spontaneity. Enabled by the characteristics of Open Type and the hard, outstanding work of designer Ale Paul, Lady René succeeds in composing texts in a simple, organic way by means of its contextual and stylistic alternates, swash characters, ligatures and connecting words. A bundle of decorative miscellanea completes the set of signs, enabling the user considerable freedom to create new typographic landscapes. The type design for Impecunious JNL comes from the 1939 sheet music for "You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer (Until You Fall in Love)". The name comes from another piece of sheet music, 1899's "Impecunious Davis" [a piece of late 19th century tripe demeaning Black Americans]. However, the word "impecunious" was intriguing. According to the website Merriam-Webster.com, the simple definition of impecunious means "having little or no money". Since we've all been in that spot at one time or another, it became a perfect font name. Impecunious JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A one-time co-worker of mine sometimes used a fanciful inkpen-style script in display-lettering situations. I liked it a lot. "Phil," I says, "why not do the whole alphabet, maybe a few little dingbats, and I'll make a font." Well, one day he presented me with a stack of posterboard; he'd done some letters, all right -- hundreds of 'em. I managed to boil these down into a typeface called Treefrog, a name that seems to match its organic jumble, its tall x-height, its left- and right-leaning stems, its thick and thin strokes. Full release has many dingbats.

Informal does not have to mean aggressively modern or casual. Helenium is inspired by some hand drawn capitals that I found added to a 19th century map. It's a great font for informal titles and headings that still keep an air or regularity and ever so slightly period elegance. It manages to be formal and casual all at once, as well as classical and modern. Helenium's range of different weights and drop shadow effects make it useful for hierarchical titles and headings. Helenium miniscule adds greater flexibility by extending the family with a fun range of rounded lower case forms.

Rahaf is my little daughter's name; the word 'Rahaf' means kindness, sensitive and loving in Arabic. Thus, HS Rahaf is an Arabic display and text typeface. It is useful for headlines, books cover and other graphic projects. It gives the feeling and impression of hand-lettering. So it can be used for text when hand writing is needed, like in caricature texts and children stories and books. HS Rahaf is characterized by simplicity, clarity of reading and beautiful flaunt. The inspiration for Mimosa comes directly from the packaging for “Moulinard Jeune”, a line of French toiletries from the 1920s. I created the 240-odd glyphs needed to make up a complete font based upon the style of a handful of hand-lettered characters that were used on the original items. Mimosa is a mono-weight, connecting vertical script with a fairly regular set of lower case and slightly more decorative upper case glyphs. As with any decorative script, if you set copy in all caps, you will be tracked down and severely punished by the type police.

Symbolum Croatian heritage awakened. Symbolum is the first ever contemporary interpretation of Glagolitic script. This rediscovered Croatian gemstone gleams again with its unique and glorious letter shapes that give this typeface an exceptional value and meaning. The letters of this contemporary slab serif are inspired with Glagolitic script, but it is not the revival. Some letters originally don’t exist, but are invented, so the font can cover the central European character set. It is suitable for branding, game design, art and conceptual projects, but also for longer texts and more complex designs. The italics are designed at an 10° angle.

Alles Kaputt means ‘everything’s broken’ in German. I always wonder why my stuff breaks so easily, especially my mobile phones (I have had 7 in the last two years). Maybe I am careless, but I believe that there is a more or less scientific explanation that chaos and destruction are far easier than harmony and creation. I am no scientist, so don’t take my word for it! Alles Kaputt is a nice script font. I made it with a felt tip pen I borrowed from the kids. Use it for texts on product packaging, book covers and websites. Or, whatever you fancy!

Every single character in Nipey is unique! Meaning that no characters is a copy of another. All accented characters therefore are hand-drawn and unique. For example, the letter "ñ" is not a copy of 'n' with a diacritical tilde - and this goes for all accented characters, as well as the ordinary ones! Besides that, Nipey has got autoligatures for doublelettered lower- and uppercase, as well as numbers. But that's not all! Nipey also has got a full set of alternate lower- and uppercase letters! Talk about a unique font, huh! You will need to use OpenType supporting applications to use the autoligatures.

The name Norden means “the Nordic”, as in the geographical area or its countries. Inspired by the simplicity of Nordic and Scandinavian design, the Norden fonts give you clarity of expression, beyond the usual geometric look and feel of traditional sans-serifs. Comma Base is a sans typeface for it has no serifs. No wait, it is a typical serif typeface because it has a high contrast. Strictly speaking, Comma Base is a missing link between serif and sans, offering the best of both worlds. Comma Base supports several OpenType features for advanced typographic control. It consists of 16 styles, 8 weights from Hairline to Ultra, in both roman and italic. Comma Base is a uniwidth font. This means changing a text from normal to bold doesn’t effect the set width, a professional feature that is highly appreciated by graphic designers.

Futuramano was the kind of typeface we scribbled in those old days, when I was an art-director in advertising agencies. We used it to simulate the headlines and the subheads, so the client could read what the copywriters had in mind. As Futura was the font of choice in those days (as it still is), our scribbled typeface looked much like Futura. The second half of the name “mano” means hand, so that is what it is, kind of a handwritten Futura. Futuramano is very practical if you want to have that unfinished touch! African fonts are characterised by design considerations that differ from those of Europe and the Americas. At one extreme we have a relaxed and casual approach to life that values the quality of each moment in life far more than people do in the west. In this approach each element of the font, while being part of a community, nevertheless stands on its own and has its own "character". An African font that characterises this approach is Ubuvila (the word means relaxedness or relaxation in Zulu). There is no strict adherence to a design format in Ubuvila nor are the characters constrained by resting on the same baseline. They wander up and down in the sentence and find a comfortable resting place.

Hard Rain is named after the torrential thunderstorms that occur in the subtropical regions on the east coast of southern Africa -- the land of the Zulu. During the two-month long rainy season the steamy downpour usually lasts for a few days, and is then followed by the welcoming sun. The diagonal stripes represent the heavy drops of water that drench everything they touch. The resulting font has something of a grunge look to it. As with other grunge fonts, Hard Rain is best used for posters and display work. However, the crisp edges mean that it can be very readable even if used at a small size. Unlike most grunge fonts, Hard Rain has a full character set and this greatly extends its usability.
