Once upon a time, Mestre Patau, the «Black» magician, concerned about children´s typefaces historical ugliness, decided to settle the matter and using his vector powers, made letters embellished to be used in that stories so that they were according with the great genius all children have inside. Well done face but happy, goodness is not incompatible with joy. A solid construction, smooth, rounded, vibrant, generous curves and even more generous x-height and general proportions, give to the letter the vitality and freshness needed for use in projects where formality is not a requirement. Naughty but welldone, although not heeding the overshoots or the formal alignments, no symmetry in the horns is, despite this, or because of it, a fresh, cheerful but perfectly legible type. A Trollkatt in Norwegian myth, is the cat associated with witches. The last few days a stray ginger cat seems to have adopted us - she comes into the house, lies down on the carpet and loves the cat food we bought her. We have posted some ‘found a cat’ messages online and hung op some flyers - just in case someone is missing a cat. Because of the stray, I decided that I should name this font something cattish, so Trollkatt is what popped up. The font is quite nice; I made it with my Chinese ink and a brush, from which I cut most of the hairs. This font won’t catch mice, but it will put some magic into your designs! And the stray cat… well, if she isn’t chipped and no one comes to fetch her, we will keep her. #happyending

Schlange is a rich typeface with rounded terminals. The family includes five sans serifs and five slab serifs in weights from ultra liight to bold. Schlange’s personality is determined by an open aperture and quite large lower case characters in comparison with the upper case set. Schlange’s personality is open and friendly, giving a text it’s used for a soft, warm appeal. Schlange will work well as a display type (think titles, short magazine call-outs, ad banners, and such), but it’s not a good choice for extensive bodies of academic text. Available in numerous weights, the typeface provides rich opportunities for mixing and matching and is great for typographic compositions. These qualities make Schlange a dream type for a packaging designer. It will feel at home in design for cosmetics or sweets, postcards, children’s books and menus.

Quiroga Serif began in 2007 with the name Quadratta Serif. This typography was designed for continuous text, legible at medium and small sizes, with great saving of space, optimized for 6, 8, 10 and 12 points. The morphology is a mix between tradition and innovation; it has a vertical axis, thick serifs, tall x-height, light modulation and a lot of internal space between letters: key to improve legibility at small sizes. Formally, my idea was to make a serif type that had a unique color, this is visible due to the light modulation. This is also complemented with the incorporation of not common, alternative signs. Some parts of the letters that are usually curb or diagonal where made horizontal (for example: a, q, p, etc.), this makes the eye of each character to be wide and unique. The serifs (wedge type) suffered diverse variations during the process. At the begining they where thicker and ended vertically, but this caused a great deal of printing errors. And so we decided to modify them by giving them an angle to avoid visible errors in medium and small sizes. The ch, and ll ligatures where rescued because they are a part of our current spanish alphabet. The historic ligatures and stylistic alternates give different options to users who want different alternatives within a text. The accentuation signs were composed in a middle line above all signs to avoid visual shock. We also gave plenty of importance to small caps numbers, mathematical signs and currency signs so that the could interact well.

Welcome Amica Pro, a workhorse sans designed to give your branding a friendly, approachable look. What is it that makes a typeface friendly? Eclectotype undertook extensive research* in this and the results are in! To cut a long story short, friendliness in sans serif fonts can be summed up in two words – short and fat. Basically, think Danny DeVito in letter form. The shortness in Amica Pro is achieved (somewhat counterintuitively) by pushing up the x-height. This, coupled with short ascenders and descenders, gives the text a squat appearance. For the fatness, that's easy in the bolder weights, but how to carry this through to the lights? Here, the fatness equates to roundness, so the letterforms, even if the stroke weight is light, have a rotund appearance from the wideness and roundness of the circular glyphs. When thinking about friendliness, we think about inclusiveness. To this end, Amica Pro supports a super wide range of latin-based languages, as it uses Underware's Latin Plus character set, as well as extra support for Vietnamese. Amica Pro is best used for branding, logos, infographics etc. It will give your UI a friendlier feel, but that doesn't mean it's not serious. There are many useful typographic features, including alternates, numerous figure styles, automatic fractions and case-sensitive forms. The italics are carefully optically corrected "sloped romans" and as such they are the same width as their upright equivalent, so changing your copy to italics will not mess around with the spacing. *I looked at a few fonts and drew some lazy conclusions.

Castile is a central region of Spain that formed the core of the Kingdom of Castile, under which Spain was united in the 15th and 16th centuries. "Castile" is a Kufic modern Arabic typeface. It is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. It is very distinctive when used in black and white printout. It decorates colored pages and makes artworks more attractive. This font comes in three different weights. I adore Spain and the historical achievements of the Islamic civilization existed there in the past. By designing "Castile" Typeface, I wanted to refer to the Islamic civilization that Muslims had in Spain and especially in Andalusia. Today the name of Castile survives in two autonomous regions of Spain: Castile-La Mancha (capital city is Toledo) and Castile-Leon (capital city is Valladolid). The main characteristic of "Castile" Typeface is in its modern open-end style for some of its Arabic characters such as "Sad", "Dad", "Seen", "Sheen", "Qaf", "Faa", "Yaa" and others. The shape of the characters' "dot", "dots", and "point" is innovative; a triangle with a semi-circle shape. "Castile" Typeface is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. Its charactersí modern Kufic styles give the typeface more distinction when it is used also in posters, greeting cards, covers, exhibitionsí signboards and external or internal walls of malls or metroís exits and entrances. Burford Rustic is the weathered and textured alternative to the Burford Family. It works the same way as Burford as a layer-based font family, but with some style variations and new layering options. Transport New is a redrawing of the typeface designed for British road signs. In addition to the familiar Heavy and Medium weights, Transport New extrapolates and adds a previously unreleased Light weight font originally planned for back-lit signage but never actually applied. Version 3.0 of Transport New features significant improvements including numerous outline and spacing refinements, and a full complement of Latin Extended-A characters. Also, to align Transport New with the 2015 release of Motorway, the other typeface used for UK road signage, Italic fonts for all three weights have been added. Originally designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert beginning in 1957 and first published on the Preston bypass in 1958, the original Transport font has subtle eccentricities which add to its distinctiveness, and drawing the New version involved walking a tightrope between impertinently eliminating awkwardness and maintaining idiosyncrasy. The Grotesk roots of the glyphs were investigated and cheekily fine-tuned – uncomfortably close terminals of characters such as 5, 6, C, G, and e were shortened, the S and s were given a more upright aspect and their protruding lower terminals tucked in, overly wide glyphs like the number 4 were narrowed, and some claustrophobic counters were slightly opened up. The question mark was redesigned and parentheses given some stroke contrast. The x height was edged fractionally even taller. The Heavy font is actually more of a Bold, and the Light is pretty much a regular weight, but the original nomenclature has been retained for old times’ sake.

Michael Hoffmann manufactures digital fonts for 30 years. At URW++ he contributed to the technological progress. Over the years, he also specialized in the ideal representation of fonts on screen and the complex assembly of international fonts with scripts of all countries. In his latest project he put the emphasis on developing a highly readable typeface. Less interested in the design as in the functionality of this typeface, he designed Arsapia which he has now installed as a system font on all his computers. Michael Hoffmann studied Japanology at the University of Hamburg and traveled in the early years of his professional activity frequently to Japan, there to train the IKARUS font production tools to Japanese customers. In his spare time he plays guitar or golf depending on the weather. The typeface Arsapia has been designed in such a way that all three font styles Light, Regular and Bold have the same width. When a user therefore opts for the use of Arsapia Light, even though he has already written his text in Regular, nothing changes with respect to the letter tracking. When choosing the Bold for emphasis: Nothing changes except the blackness of the letters. A font change does not engender unwanted line and page breaks of itself. All letters can be clearly distinguished from each other. 1 l I O 0 are all different. For programmers and lovers of monospaced fonts Michael Hoffmann has developed a fourth typeface: Arsapia Mono. This is the perfect terminal font.

A gentle breeze on a warm summer's day. A cozy gathering of friends and family around a crackling fire. The sweet aroma of freshly baked cinnamon bread. A slow walk in the autumn woods, light sparkling down through the multi-colored leaves. Billowing white clouds against a stark azur sky, leisurely floating past the tops of palm trees. What do these idyllic scenes all have in common? A: Most people can never find the time to enjoy any of them. B: These are just some of the things you would never try to describe using a crankish font like Spleeny Decaf GD. Just as ITC Fontoon was designed to be used with the many critters that populate the "Toonie" series of fonts, Spleeny Decaf GD was created by Steve Zafarana for use in the balloned dialogue portions of a new panel cartoon feature currently under development. Spleeny Decaf GD is the first completed font in a family that ranges from the jittery san serif Spleeny Espresso GD to the sedate and serifed Spleeny Asleep GD. Each font in the series appears a little more relaxed and staid than its predecessor. None of them however, will find themselves being used for the text of any legal documents. This family was created/inspired from the well-known Baskerville Roman and Italic typefaces created by John Baskerville, the English font designer. We were inspired by the original family sent by Baskerville’s wife after his death. The full Baskerville collection was bought by the French editor and author Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais who used it to print - in Switzerland - for the first time the complete works of Voltaire (known as the “Kehl edition” from the "Imprimerie de la société littéraire typographique"). We have used this edition, with copies from 1785, to reconstruct these two genuine historical styles. The font faces, kerning, and spacing are scrupulously identical to the original. This Pro font includes characters for Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic) and Turkish, with a complete set of small caps, standard and “long s” ligatures in each of the two styles.

This font is mainly inspired from the engraved characters of a German Map depicting Germany's roads and parts of surrounding lands, edited in Berlin probably in the end of 1700's. The engraver was Carl Jaeck or Jaek (1763-1808). The Map was bought by the French napoleonic general Louis Pierre Delosme (1768-1828) probably during the Napolenic campaign against Germany, circa 1805 or at least 1806, his sole staying in Germany. The font (with two styles, Normal and Italic)is containing standard ligatures and a few alternative characters. It is a "small eye" or "Small x-eight" font, as the Maps' characters are most often very small (some Italic lower cases of the map are 1mm hight, upper cases 2mm) The standard English characters set is completed with accented or specific characters for Western (Including Celtic) and Central European, Baltic, Eastern Europe and Turkish languages.

Prêt-à-porter is a project developed as part of a series of type experiments appearing on the blog ‘Letritas’. If you were a grotesque in mid-20th-century Switzerland, you were expected to be serious and proper, if a little dull. Unlike its dogmatic Modernist predecessors, Formular is a hip Swiss sans serif of the new generation. Inspired by the utilitarian 19th-century grotesques, its precision and and versatility are combined with a slightly eccentric character. A child of its time, it scoffs at the ideology of ‟ideal” forms, yet it is every bit as functional for all its idiosyncrasies, as any self-respecting Swiss sans. Formular comes in five weights with corresponding italics and a monospace companion to the regular weight. Drawn by Tony Stan, ITC Garamond was first released in 1975 in Book and Ultra weights only. These were intended as display faces to complement existing text designs from other foundries. (In fact, many of ITC’s interpretations of traditional typefaces began as display counterparts for existing text designs.) These first weights of ITC Garamond became so popular, however, that ITC released the Light and Bold weights and a suite of condensed faces in 1977. Now, the complete ITC Garamond family features sixteen members: four weights of roman and italic in normal width and four weights of roman and italic in companion condensed versions. The Lina typeface family was designed by Roy Cole and completed in 2003. The roman font, Lina 30, was drawn originally by hand and later its character set extended and digitally redrawn with the aid of Fontographer. The five additional fonts, 60, 90, and the italics 33, 66, 99 followed and were all produced digitally from scratch. Lina is characterized by economy, lightness and evenness of weight. The capitals and figures are not as tall as the lower-case but retain the latter’s weight, and the figures are designed to provide enhanced recognition. The characters are relatively large on the body and text and benefit from additional leading. Lina is essentially a typeface for text composition. Roy Cole's other typeface families are Zeta, Colophon and Coleface.

Displace Serif is a continuation of my Displace fonts. Adding serifs allows you to see the font in a new way. There is a more pronounced charm of Italian monumental fonts, but in an expressive way. The appearance of the serifs allowed the font to move to the antiqua class, but this is purely a formal matter. The proportion of serifs changes markedly from weight to weight, allowing the font to retain its decorative character. In the Light drawing the serifs are barely visible and delicate, while in the Black they are in superposition. The font is catchy, noticeable, which makes it suitable for graphics requiring instantaneous spectator emotions. Displace Serif is suitable for editorial design, as despite the modern image it retains the classic concept.

Moonless is a charming handmade font duo, designed for texts, with a matching display font for titles in four different styles. DecorateTheTree is a festive novelty font family containing two styles designed to be used in layers. Each style has letters on Christmas-tree lights. The regular style has clear bulbs and the bold style has filled bulbs. Some characters are on standing bulbs and others on hanging bulbs and these two sets are made to alternate with the OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature. To use only one set of bulbs, this feature must be turned off and character spacing adjusted, though why anyone would want to use only one set is a mystery. These fonts are monospaced. They are useful to display a holiday message not just in words but in the lettering itself. (The characters on the bulbs are derived from the font SansduskiMono.)
