Gustav Jaeger's Becket typeface embodies a retro-medieval aesthetic. Base letterforms that might have been at home with a writer of Irish uncials have been streamlined according to late 20th century tastes to create a timeless effect. Harpsichord (as I have named it) is from the late 1940s and was designed at Lucian Bernhard Studios in New York for Bernhard's Magnetype Collection. It was originally published as 'Community Low' along with 'Community Condensed'. Many of his Magnetype Fonts have been dormant which I hope to revive in the near future.

You will see this in the old type catalogs as Dainty. Late in the nineteenth century, type founders developed a number of fonts with a "pen-drawn" look. They wanted to complete with the work of the hand lettering artists who were coming into their own, thanks to the new art of photoengraving

Hexide JNL was modeled and modified from an original design created by the late sign artist Alf R. Becker for Signs of the Times® Magazine. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Publications, Inc. and the American Sign Museum of Cincinnati, Ohio for providing the reference material used to make this font.

A sales catalog sheet from the American Decalcomania Company circa the late 1940s-early 1950s provided some hand lettering that served as the inspiration for Sign Painter JNL. Emulating the look of characters made with a round pen nib, this Deco-style typeface conveys nostalgia and charm seldom found in advertising of today.

Mixed Drinks JNL derives its look from a set of gold foil self-adhesive letters made by a company called Cameo for the Schenley distilling company circa the late 1950s or early 1960s. The letters were used to personalize bottles of whiskey for your own bar or to give as a unique gift.

Oakland is a Streamline era design inspired by some hand-drawn lettering on a 1930's French poster advertising a certain brand of Car (Automobile for our American cousins). My family and I are stuck in quarantine for a week; my eldest son tested positive for Covid19 (but everyone else tested negative), so we can’t go out. That means that the kids follow classes online. I noticed their notebooks and suddenly realised that a notebook used to be called a ‘cahier’, which is a French word meaning the exact same thing. I guess it sounded sophisticated at the time. Mon Petit Cahier (meaning: My Little Notebook) is a handmade script font. It is not meant to be awe-inspiring, nor do you want to use it for headlines or posters. It is a nice little font that feels at home wherever an unobtrusive script is needed. Comes with all the diacritics you want and a set of cool double letter ligatures.

The Cochin font is based on the work of eighteenth-century punchcutter, Cochin. Charles Peignot commissioned the revival of this strong typeface in 1912. The capitals are squarish. The lowercase has long ascenders and sharp serifs, giving Cochin an unusual elegance. The curved ascender in the italic lowercase d is a major characteristic and the p and q lack foot serifs. Cochins overall vivacity derives from the engravings on copper, produced in France in the eighteenth century. Cochin is a trademark of Linotype Corp. registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and may be registered in certain other jurisdictions in the name of Linotype Corp. or its licensee Linotype GmbH.

Royal, majestic, elegant. These letters are based on Roman and Greek characters carved on stone. They come in 3 different styles. Normal and Shaded are designed to have serifs with a finer thinning. On the other hand, Metallic is bolder and simulates in the most realistic way three-dimensional metallic lettering. There are some alternate characters placed at lowercase positions as well as a few stylistic alternates which are accessed through the OpenType features. Pay attention to letters like Greek Omega (lowercase position) and Greek Xi (lowercase position) as well as B, R, K (lowercase position). Along Sans Grande is an ultra condensed sans serif font family developed based on the typeface styles of the Along Sans Geometric Font Family. In the case of the black weight with the largest change in the size of the stem, the size is 180:140:100, respectively. And, the thin weight style has the same proportion of stem size. Some Glyphs that need to support the stem alone remain a size 222 for Black Weight. These interpolation rules are sufficient to complement the rhythm and readability of the whole family. Viktor Solt-Bittner drew logo sketches for an insurance company. Luckily for Schriftlabor, they rejected the design, and he turned the sketches into a font family. Years later, Plantago was expanded, developed and completed by Schriftlabor’s type directors Franziska Hubmann and Lisa Schultz. Plantago shows delicate leaf-like stroke endings and subtle curvings and offers condensed and wide variants. Typeset in 6 weights from Light to Black, 3 widths from Condensed to Extended, both upright and italic, totaling in no less than 36 styles.

After the Second World War, the Ionic style replaced Modern Face as the favored typeface for newsprint. A couple decades later, it was in turn replaced by the next generation of newspaper fonts, a mix of Old Face, Transitional and Modern Face forms. Rotation was designed by Arthur Ritzel and presented by Stempel/Linotype in 1971 and named for the rotation newsprint machine for which is was particularly suited. The font displays the influence of Old Face design and gives newsprint a feeling of lightness and elegance.

Julio Cortázar (1914-1984) was a unique and unclassifiable writer inside the universal narrative. His creative trajectory was full of hits which couldn't find echoes in later works. The original sketches who formed the base for Remontoire is known as one of the first typefaces drawn by Karl-Erik Forsberg . It was a result of a competition set up by various typographic organizations in the early 1930. The typeface was never completed and sketches are only to be found on paper. Made only as a single font but some the character can later on be found in other of examples of his work; Carolus and Ericus. MRF developed and expanded the family into 5 weights.

Flagellum Dei is Latin for ‘The Scourge of God’. It is a title given by later generations to Attila the Hun (406-453 C.E.). Flagellum Dei is also a rather scary font, which I made with the use of a stiff brush and some China ink. Of course you could use this quite versatile font to scare the bejesus out of your friends, but I’d much rather see it used on book covers, posters and album artwork. Flagellum Dei comes with a horde of diacritics.

Some years ago we developed a monospaced 12 pitch sans serif for a client. We also created a 10 pitch version that was later discarded. PropTen is the 10 pitch version modified to proportional widths. The name PropTen refers to 'Proportional 10 Pitch'- which is a technical impossibility. It does have a slight 'its time to vote' twist to it. You know, after you pick your candidate you also need to vote yes or no on the following Propositions, don't forget Prop10, the team needs those uniforms.

Stencil Punch JNL is modeled from lettering examples made by a Diagraph stencil cutting machine. Diagraph was the first company to make the stencil punch machines used in industry and by the military. Eckhardt Embellishments JNL collects a number of vintage pointing hands, ribbons, panels and embellishments from an early 1900s sign painter's manual and misc. type sources. This font is a continuation of the series named in honor of the late Albert Eckhardt, Jr. - a Miami area sign painter and close friend of type designer Jeff Levine.

A type foundry example showcasing some letters from a narrow slab serif wood type design served as the inspiration for Wood Serif Poster JNL. This condensed typeface is available in both regular and oblique versions, and digitally recreates the kind of lettering found on flyers, broadsides and newspaper headlines of the mid-to-late 1800s.
