Undulate was designed as an alternating-letter font in which two sets of characters alternate. The alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature contextual alternatives (calt). Some individual characters look strange in isolation but they fit into a wave-like pattern in which shapes that bulge up alternate with shapes that bulge down. Undulate has monospaced and monoline letters. The letter spacing is very tight to accentuate the ripple pattern. The family includes an outline style that can be used in a layer above the regular style to add color. Undulate was not designed for any particular use but as a challenge to fit letters into a particular geometric shape. The unusual patterns that a result are eye-catching and may be useful for advertising or signage and in other places where one wants attention-grabbing lettering.

YinYangMessages contains two sets of letters, those on the upper-case keys that fit on the left side of a yin-yang symbol and those on the lower-case keys that fit on the left side of a yin-yang symbol. One can alternate the two sets manually but the OpenType contextual alternatives feature does this automatically in any program that supports this feature. The family contains two fonts. In one the filled half is on the left and in the other the filled half is on the right. The slash and backspace keys contain blank halves of the symbol, which are useful for completing words with an odd number of letters. The two styles can be used in layers. For decades, cereal companies have included premiums [promotional gifts] inside their packages, printed on the cartons or to send for with a special coupon and redemption instructions. During the 1940s, Pep cereal [a long-discontinued Kellogg's brand] offered a series of water-applied decals within its boxes. Most likely made by the Meyercord Company (one of America's largest transfer decal manufacturers at the time), one decal in particular had an alphabet in gold letters with black outlines. (One can only presume the marketing strategy was to have kids bug their parents to buy more Pep cereal if the child needed more than one letter of the alphabet for his or her initials!) Those decal letters have inspired a digital version as the outline character font Toy Decals JNL, which is available in regular oblique, solid and solid oblique styles.

Dionisio, a CastleType original, takes its inspiration from one of the overlooked treasures of the CastleType library: Ransahoff. The latter is extremely condensed and very elegant. I particularly like its hairline slab serifs and cross-bars. I decided to use it as a starting point for a new design, but to make the proportions more classic and to make it more sensuous with gentler curves and bracketed cross-bar serifs. The result is very Bodoni-like, but less extreme and more contemporary looking. Meanwhile, Dionisio maintains a hint of Ransahoff with condensed letterforms and very fine serifs. The name of this font brings back memories of an old fried chicken restaurant in Willow Springs Illinois circa 1960’s and 1970’s, my family would all get in the car and take a long drive down to an old country road Illionis Rt 171 through a forest preserve where we’d come upon the old Willowbrook motel with a bar and restaurant next door. The restaurant was called Kegal’s, when you entered the building you had to walk through the smoky bar first to get to the restaurant, I can still see the hard wood floors with all the finish worn off from decades of foot traffic. Up until the mid 1960’s Kegal’s used to raise their own chickens behind the restaurant, back then fried chicken in the Midwest was either coated in flour or bread crumbs, Kegal’s was covered in a beautiful layer of golden bread crumbs. Before your meal arrived they’d bring a basket of dinner rolls along with crackers, bread sticks and country butter, on the side they’d serve coleslaw with a vinegar sauce, which is very common in the Midwest, the first time you try it your face puckers up like you just sucked on a lemon but you get used it over time. After waiting for what seemed like forever to a child the waitress comes out of the kitchen with a huge tray of that golden deliciousness and your mouth begins to water, in her other hand was another tray filled to overflowing with crinkle cut french fries all made by hand, I’d eat a hole handful of those french fries first then take a bite of that tender juicy farm raised chicken. Today a fine Italian restaurant occupies the old Kegal’s building and the motel is long gone, only my fond memories remain. Fast forward to 2020 and FontMesa has just made some Fried Chicken as an eight weight type font family with alternates. Another 48-cut family from a typeface system which originally arose from the need to simply explain to some publishers what it is “serif, sans-serif, egyptian”, etc. including their style variations. Over time, the Trivia became quite popular, which was her goal. The Dragon Quill family is the 3rd reincarnation of earlier (yet to be released) dragon fonts. A simple 'Dragon Round' grew to become 'Dragon Flare', then evolved to become 'Dragon Quill'. Within the Dragon Quill family, 1 'Subtle Goth' is the most basic, followed by 2 'Goth' and 3 'Gothic'. 4 'Tribal Tattoo' is the most complex font in the family, adding hooks, spikes, holes and extra shapes around and between letters. Because of the complexity of level 4 'Tribal Tattoo', occasionally inserting letters into existing text may cause some unusual effects between the letters. If you find this distracting, a workaround can be to convert it into one of the other fonts (like Subtle Goth), while editing, then to turn it back into 'Tribal Tattoo' when finished.

During the Covid pandemic, I noticed that a lot of public figures (politicians, actors, influencers and even kings and princesses) had to apologise for not following the social distance rules, the lockdown rules or the 'stay at home' rules. They threw parties, went on holidays abroad and - in general - made a nuisance of themselves. When I finished this font, I decided to call it Public Figure! Public Figure is quite a neat, handmade font. It doesn't stick to the rules (but does like to keep up appearances), likes to party (but manages to stay safe) and brightens up your work (without being too gaudy). Public Figure comes with two alternate sets for the lower case glyphs (that cycle as you type) and a massive amount of diacritics, including Vietnamese.

Romanovsky is the font developed on the base of samples from the catalogue of Osip Lehman foundry in Sankt Petersburg. Original Latin design that was used for Romanovsky can be found in Feder Grotesk by Jacob Erbar. The current digital font is not a scanned version of Lehman’s samples but a newly drawn typeface that differs from the original in many details. Romanovsky is a sans serif typeface with narrow proportions and noticeable contrast. It will be good for headings and display matters. Character set covers languages of Western and Central Europe and Cyrillic-based languages. It also contains around 20 ligatures of uppercase letters for the most frequent combinations. My family and I are stuck in quarantine for a week; my eldest son tested positive for Covid19 (but everyone else tested negative), so we can’t go out. That means that the kids follow classes online. I noticed their notebooks and suddenly realised that a notebook used to be called a ‘cahier’, which is a French word meaning the exact same thing. I guess it sounded sophisticated at the time. Mon Petit Cahier (meaning: My Little Notebook) is a handmade script font. It is not meant to be awe-inspiring, nor do you want to use it for headlines or posters. It is a nice little font that feels at home wherever an unobtrusive script is needed. Comes with all the diacritics you want and a set of cool double letter ligatures.

Although ITC Styleboy has a retro feel, it isn't based on any earlier typeface. As far as inspiration goes," says designer Chester Wajda, "I'd have to say comic strips of the '20s and '30s, and silent-film marquee lettering from the '20s - with a hint of a Chinese brush?" He originally created the typeface for a children's book he was working on. "I wanted it to be fun, but still somewhat formal in its underlying structure," he says. "It's largely based on right and 45-degree angles, with slight tucks inward on the stems and bowls, and a few flourishes here and there." Styleboy's top-heavy look is most noticeable in the caps, but it's exaggerated too in the "8" and the lowercase "g." Styleboy is Wajda's first typeface design."

Bougainville was inspired by many of my favorites and has been on the drawing board in excess of ten years. Only this year I decided to expand the original 1994 design to include other weight variants. The quirky Binner Gothic-inspired high axis and its funky g, rounded e, angled stroke endings together with the influence of contemporary designs such as Officina Sans, Din Mittelschrift and MetaPlus, Bougainville exhibits a similar flavor and compactness to Bodega Sans. This typeface family has been named in honor of the renowned eighteen-century French mathematician and explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville to whom we owe the naming of South Sea Islands and colorful tropical flora he discovered along his journey. Bougainville makes for effective headings at any size and is equally readable at semi-display sizes.

Franko Luin, Odense's designer, on this typeface: With Odense I entered the field where Optima reigns in royal majesty. The first question I received was, in fact, why I designed another Optima. Look closely: Odense has as much in common with Optima as Garamond with Baskerville. Am I right? Odense Neon is a special variant that can be used for logos or single words. I had the idea for it when I noticed that the neon tubes in a sign over a store only partially followed the characters. The name comes from the Danish town Odense, the town of the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, author of, e.g., 'The Little Mermaid.' Odense is also the place where the first book in the Nordic countries was printed, the 'Breviarium Ottoniense', in 1482.

Now here's a font that is named Like Butterflies, but has got nothing to do with butterflies! What? Why? Well, I recently heard the song "Even flow" by Pearl Jam and took a trip down memory lane - back to my early twenties. I remember how the lyrics affected me, and had an impact on how my life changed the years to follow. Maybe the style of the font does not reflect the inner meaning of the song, but it does reflect a look back in time for me - and the change that took place. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the somewhat simple, handmade style of Like Butterflies and the 4 versions that works very well together! HWT Konop is a monospaced (fixed-width) typeface that is also square! Designed by Mark Simonson (Proxima Nova) as square characters that can be arranged vertically or horizontally and in any orientation. To a traditional letterpress job printer, a font like this wouldn’t make much sense. But to a modern letterpress printer it is an unusual and creative design toolkit. The bold gothic style is reminiscent of gothic wood types but more geometric. Since the characters are meant to be used in any orientation, the usual optical adjustments, such as making verticals thicker than horizontals and making tops smaller than bottoms are set aside. This results in a quirky but charming design. To provide more design options, Simonson came up with a modular system consisting of three sizes: 12-line, 8-line, and 6-line. These three sizes can be used together like Lego® bricks, with endless arrangements possible. And the sidebearing match so that characters always align when different sizes are used together. The digital version of Konop replicates the wood type version as much as possible, including the three different size designs. For many years license plates in Italy have been using a quite peculiar sans serif monospace typeface with slightly rounded corners and a geometric, condensed skeleton. These letterforms have been used by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini as an inspiration for Targa, published as the first-ever Zetafonts typeface in 2003. Almost twenty years later, Francesco Canovaro has brought the project under scrutiny for a complete redesign, keeping its inventions, solving its issues, and making it into a versatile multi-weight typeface. The original type family has been developed in two subfamilies: Targa Pro Mono (which keeps the original monospace widths) and Targa Pro Roman (with proportional widths), both in five weights plus italics. The original family also included the handmade version Targa Hand which has been paired with a new Targa Pro Stencil to allow for more versatility and choice for display use. All weights of Targa Pro feature an extended latin character set covering over 200 languages, as well as a full set of Open Type features including positional numbers, alternates and stylistic sets. Halfway between postmodern appropriation of utilitarian design and rationalist design, Targa Pro sits comfortably at the crossroads between artificial nostalgia and modernist functionality, ready to surprise the user with its versatility and quirky Italian flavour.

The dearJoe series of fonts had it’s origin somewhere around 1999, the year I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt at converting my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own handwriting had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use. And that’s what they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on just about anything, ranging from Vietnamese riksjas, a Tasmanian gym to a fancy chocolate store on 5th Avenue. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what later became the JOEBOB graphics font foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in making something that can almost pass for actual handwriting.
