Village was originally designed by Frederic Goudy in 1903 for Kuppenheimer & Company for advertising use, but it was decided it would be too expensive to cast. It was later adopted as the house face for Goudy's Village Press. The design was very much influenced by William Morris's 'Golden' type. Paul Hunt began working on a digital version of Frederic Goudy's Village type prior coming to P22 in 2006 for an internship (which evolved into a staff designer position at P22.) Around this time, The Tampa Book Arts Studio was looking for a digital version of Village to complement with a letterpress edition of a book called "The Rich Mouse" by JJ Lankes. Many years later the Rich Mouse project has been completed, so we decided to release the Village type on the same day as the release of the Rich Mouse Book!

Tusque is a layered chromatic type family with a Tuscan flavor. Regular, Circus and Tooled can stand alone, while Highlight and Deco are purely for layering up multicolored gorgeousness. Tusque lends itself to fairy tales, wine labels and boutique logos, and makes some particularly delectable drop caps. Although it’s all caps, the lower case slots are all different from the upper case so you can mix and match to your heart’s content. There are also a bevy of swash alternates and ligatures at your disposal. The contextual alternates feature cleverly substitutes alternate versions of more triangular glyphs like A and V to give a better fit. The ordinal feature changes ‘a’ and ‘o’ to the feminine and masculine ordinals for Spanish etc. but also changes ‘c’ and ‘ac’ to superscript lowercase versions for names like McBride and MacDonald.

At VetteLetters we like food but we also appreciate our drinks. Yes, of the non-alcoholic kind as well. Like milk. Contrary to what Arnold Schwartzenegger once said, Milk is not just for babies. It contains a whole lot of stuff that is genuinely good for you. Like proteins, carbohydrates, minerals (calcium a.o.) and many vitamins. One time visiting The Hague, Donald DBXL spotted a tile tableau on a brick wall, advertising a dairy factory called ‘De Sierkan’. Yellow sans serif letters on a bright blue background, dating back to the late 19th century, immediately grabbed DBXL’s attention. Especially because the tableau showed both regular and bold letters with some lovely peculiarities here and there. De Sierkan appeared to have been a milk factory solely operating in The Hague from 1879 until 1961. A number of these wall adverts are still to be seen in The Hague streets today. Photos were taken for later reference. Later is now, the lettering has been digitized, missing characters added, and VLNL Melk sees the light of day. VLNL Melk is an all-caps geometric display sans serif family of three weights, Regular, Bold and Black. The basic shape of the letters is a rectangle with rounded corners, leaving a sturdy no-nonsense look and feel. It has a distinct historic aura, but with both feet in this digital day and age. It can equally well be used for the logo of a hipster coffee place, as the cover of a historic novel. Fushar is a bold comic color font family which comes in 5 layer-styles easy to compose in a multicolor manner and 3 OpenType-SVG color styles to make the work faster and easier. Character set covers Latin alphabet of European languages, Vietnamese and Pinyin with standard ligatures, digits, punctuation, currencies and other symbols - the total of 555 glyphs. The idea came from a custom logotype I made several years ago for a local charity organisation that helps children. The logotype was based on bold letters with light that make the "balloon" effect visible in "Holes" style. Later I expanded the family with "Cuts" and all the derivative fonts that make the whole color family. The purpose was to create a funny, friendly and playful script that would embrace the beauty of the Arabic script which is available in Fushar Arabic. The Latin character set is a useful addition and is available in multilingual bundles. Solid, Cuts and Holes are classic one-color styles which can be used separately to compose a simple text. With Shadows and Lights they can produce a multicolour design, as shown on the images above. To save the time, there are three already prepared combinations in the new OpenType-SVG color format. Lycia (Lycian: 𐊗𐊕𐊐𐊎𐊆𐊖 Trm̃mis; Greek: Λυκία, Lykia; Turkish: Likya) was a geopolitical region in Anatolia in what are now the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and Burdur Province inland. Known to history since the records of ancient Egypt and the Hittite Empire in the Late Bronze Age, it was populated by speakers of the Luwian language group. Written records began to be inscribed in stone in the Lycian language (a later form of Luwian) after Lycia's involuntary incorporation into the Achaemenid Empire in the Iron Age. At that time (546 BC) the Luwian speakers were decimated, and Lycia received an influx of Persian speakers. Ancient sources seem to indicate that an older name of the region was Alope (Ancient Greek: Ἀλόπη, Alópē). Lycia fought for the Persians in the Persian Wars, but on the defeat of the Achaemenid Empire by the Greeks, it became intermittently a free agent. After a brief membership in the Athenian Empire, it seceded and became independent (its treaty with Athens had omitted the usual non-secession clause), was under the Persians again, revolted again, was conquered by Mausolus of Caria, returned to the Persians, and finally fell under Macedonian hegemony upon the defeat of the Persians by Alexander the Great.
