Dusty Circus™ is a five layer stacking display face designed to be infinitely morphed. The metrics are set identically in the individual and family set, to provide for typographic ease (although we seem to prefer an offset appearance). Great for a vintage western feel or a modern aesthetic. In addition, note that it is very easy to omit a layer and add multiple copies of other layers to produce a 3D bevel on the fly, or inline styles with flair and substance. LTD is a short set for non-commercial use only and combines two of the layers with many features/glyphs removed.

Franz Kafka’s manuscripts have always been a source of inspiration for designer Julia Sysmäläinen. At first she was just interested in literary aspects but later she noticed that content and visual form can not be separated in the work of this ingenious writer. Analyzing Kafka’s handwriting at the Berlin National Library, Julia was inspired to design the typeface FF Mister – by now a well known classic. Over the years, FF Mister K became a handsome typeface family and even produced offspring: the Josef K Patterns. Some of Kafka’s most expressive letterforms were the starting point for these decorative ornaments. How do the Patterns work? Outlines and fillings correspond to the uppercase and the lowercase letters on your keyboard. You can use them separately or layer them on top of each other. If you write a line of “pattern-text” in lowercase and repeat it underneath in uppercase you get a row of fillings followed by a row of outlines. Now you can color them and then set line space = 0 to get a single line of layered colored ornaments. Alternatively, activating OpenType / stylistic set / stylistic alternates will also unite the two lines to a single layered line. Further magic can be done with OpenType / contextual alternates turned on. On the gallery page of this font family is a downloadable Josef K Patterns.pdf with an alphabetical overview of forms. Latex was initially a single multi-script all-cap font commissioned in 2012 by a company we can't name, to market a billion-dollar superhero movie we also can't name. A year later the commission grew to include a shaded variant and a set of DIY-like fonts, with different layering possibilities for dimensional manipulation. Each of the five Latex fonts come with a character set of over 600 glyphs, supporting the vast majority of Latin languages, as well as Cyrillic and Greek alphabets. Lots of stylistic alternates are also included, including some for Cyrillic and Greek. Superheroes are cool, though their costumes need more pockets, for credibility's sake. Maybe some superheroines should find something more practical than stilettos. Or maybe not. But definitely more pockets.

In 1980, Peter Malutzki, Heidi Hübner-Prochotta and Manfred Prochotta founded the FlugBlatt-Presse and began producing broadsheets, which they called FlugBlätter and which also gave their press its name. They were mostly woodcuts or linocuts, combined with hand-set typography. When they finished the series in 1984 there were 67 FlugBlätter. During a Frankfurt Book Fair in the 1980s the collector Rob Saunders acquired FlugBlatt No. 37 along with other prints. Later they became part Letterform Archive, a non-profit museum and special collection library in San Francisco, which Rob Saunders founded in 2014. In 2021, Letterform Archive posted the FlugBlatt No. 37 on social media, where type designer Lena Schmidt saw it, immediately fell in love with it, and developed the plan to bring it into the digital world. After contacting Peter Malutzki – who is still working as a book artist today – and in close consultation with him, Schmidt translated the letterforms into a font series, Malutzki Initials. The three fonts can be used for black (single-color) text using the Regular style, or for multicolor text by applying different colors to the Letter Layer and Figure Layer styles.

Madromit(ma-do-ro-mi) is a somewhat nostalgic display font. Do you remember computer advertisements in the 80s and 90s? Yes, it is the most excited period in the history of computer. We call the design in this period Primitive Digital Design. Madromit is, so to speak, the revival or reconstruction of the primitive digital type in the period. The structure and elements of this font are very simple and the key features are geometric shape and simple griddy design with rounded corners, oval bowls, and right‐angled joints which we used to see in the primitive period. In addition to this, Madromit has one more characteristic feature — classic engraving font —. It is called Open Style. Open style is one of the classic method to decorate and emphasize the font. Our aim is the synergy by the mixture of primitive digital design and classic engraving method. This mixture makes new impression we have never seen before. Madromit family consists of 5 styles for stacking color font. Please use Photoshop or Illustrator, or your favorite graphic design apps that can handle layers. Layers are the printing plates of wood type. You should be able to change text color for each layers. Madromit "Standard" style is the base of this font family. You can add open effect by stacking "Fill" layers over the Standard layer. Instruction 1. Type your text as you like. 2. Set font-name "Madromit" and font-style "Standard". 3. Set color of "Standard" layer. 4. Duplicate the "Standard" layer to make "Fill" layer. 5. Set font-style "Half Fill" or "Full Fill" and new color of upper layer. Madromit Standard, Half Open, and Full Open style can be used solely.

Patriotica JNL was inspired by some hand lettering designed by the late Alf Becker for Signs of the Times® magazine. The alphabet was modified and the character set extended in this digital version. Special thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Publications, Inc. and the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati for providing a copy of the original lettering for use as a work model. Patriotica JNL is available as a complete font or in a set of two layers (stars layer and stripes layer) for creating two-color graphics. As always, keep in mind that there are some slight variations between drawing programs, so some adjustments may need to be made in the alignment of the layers.

Burford is a font family that I sketched while traveling through Europe. I was mesmerized by all the unique typography that was showcased throughout the five countries I visited. Inspired by all that I had seen, I found myself spending 4-5 hours per day in Amsterdam’s Vondel Park drawing characters. Once back in the states I digitalized Burford, deciding it would make for a beautiful layer-based font.
