The story of Serena is a unique one among revivals. Serena was neither a metal face nor a film one. In fact it never went anywhere beyond Stefan Schlesinger’s 1940-41 initial sketches (which he called Saranna). A year later, while working with Dick Dooijes on the Rondo typeface, Schlesinger was sent to a concentration camp where he died, along with any material prospects for the gorgeous letters he'd drawn. The only sketches left of Schlesinger’s Saranna work are found in the archives of the Drukkerij Trio (the owner of which was Schlesinger’s brother-in-law). The sketches were done in pencil and ink over pencil on four sheets of paper. And now Hans van Maanen revives Schlesinger’s spirit as closely as the drawings permit, and elaborately expands the work to cover a multitude of codepages and languages. It took more than 65 years for Schlesinger’s drawings to see the light, so van Maanen made sure to bring them to life stylishly and respectfully. Serena embodies the peace and calm rarely ever found in mainstream calligraphy or other genres of display type. With upright elegance and a slight Eastern touch, this typeface expertly bridges the gracefully casual with the deeply spiritual. The light and soft letter forms add a pleasant, breezy element to anything they touch. When used sparingly in titling or display, Serena is like a sigh of desire, rare but quite memorable and very appreciated.

Zira is a playful hand-drawn font family designed by Daniel Bak (Artcity). It is available in three handy weights: regular, bold and screaming. It contains international language accent marks and diacriticals, including Greek and Cyrillic. Zira can be considered as smoothed serif version of Cornelius font. Zira as Cornelius as well is a chimpanzee character in the novel and movie series Planet of the Apes. Dr. Zira is a chimpanzee psychologist and veterinarian, who specializes in the study of humans, in the novel and subsequent movie series Planet of the Apes. Zira was played in the first three Apes movies by actress Kim Hunter. Unique among the Apes characters, Zira has blue eyes. Zira is the fiancée (later wife) of Cornelius, and both are ultimately responsible to the Minister of Science, Dr. Zaius. Zira's character and role are essentially the same in both the novel and the movies, though some story details differ. Her work in each involves both working with humans under laboratory conditions (e.g. learning and behavioural experiments), and working on them physically (lobotomy and other brain surgeries, vivisection, physical endurance and tolerance experiments, and subsequent autopsies). Zira is an outspoken liberal by nature, deploring war and militancy (and despising the gorillas, who seem to make both a way of life), and eager to seek and develop intelligence anywhere it can be found. Zira literally stands for her principles - or refuses to stand, as the case may be.

Larisch is a hand-lettered design by the Austrian calligrapher and teacher, Rudolf von Larisch. The original was used for the title page of the 1903 edition of Beispiele Kunstlerischer Schrift (Examples of Artistic Writing). Larisch is an attractive, casual set of caps of even strokes with rounded terminals. Except for the terminals, it is similar in style to Kunstler Grotesk. The numerals are lining or ranging figures, meaning they line up with the baseline, unlike old-style text figures. All are of equal width for setting up columns of numbers. The letters are well formed and easy to read, as you would expect from a writing master. Ligatures includes CH (123), CK (125), FT (135), LA (137), LO (167), OO (172), CO (177) and TT (181. An alternative O with underscore is provided at position 111. Friendly, but not fancy -- a very useful all-cap font.

This family was created/inspired from the well-known Baskerville Roman and Italic typefaces created by John Baskerville, the English font designer. We were inspired by the original family sent by Baskerville’s wife after his death. The full Baskerville collection was bought by the French editor and author Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais who used it to print - in Switzerland - for the first time the complete works of Voltaire (known as the “Kehl edition” from the "Imprimerie de la société littéraire typographique"). We have used this edition, with copies from 1785, to reconstruct these two genuine historical styles. The font faces, kerning, and spacing are scrupulously identical to the original. This Pro font includes characters for Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic) and Turkish, with a complete set of small caps, standard and “long s” ligatures in each of the two styles.

La vie est une fleur dont l'amour est le miel Fleur is the French for flower and I've chosen this language for a good reason. Over the past 5 years, I've had the opportunity to travel a lot to Paris and I've always tried to catch every moment and detail of this delightful city through the eyes of the designer inside me. Paris is full of surprises, mainly for us, artists. In fact, I believe the city is a museum itself. Every corner of any street has something inspiring. But, there’s something I particularly love and I want to address here: The Palais Garnier. Built between 1861 and 1875, this opera house is a dream made true for many of us, who love somptuosité. Garnier, the architect of this magnificent building, said that the style he proposed was not Grecian nor Roman/baroque, he created something new and called it Napoleonic: Luxurious at its best. Fleur is inspired in this palace which, in fact, has some similar letters inside. Garnier put his name at the ceiling of the Rotonde des Abonnés: Letters are interlacing each other with nicely done art nouveau curves. I thought I could take this idea and achieve something very delicate and imposing at the same time if the font consisted entirely of caps with the logic of a didone and a bit of art-nouveau. This mix of elegance and flamboyance gave birth to Fleur which has a wide range of uses but was mainly intended for perfumes, fashion magazines, storefronts, book covers or logos. Not only you'll find many decorative glyphs, but also a vast amount of unique ligatures will make you really adore this font. Tita is dedicated to my grandmother Hebe, witty and arrabalera 1. The font is inspired by Milonga 2 music and the fileteado porteño 3. I picture it at The Moulin Rouge, sparkling, provocative, loving. It evokes Tita Merello and my grandmum singing her music. Tita is Argentinean to its very core. Lu Nolasco, also known as Lunol, is a fresh representative of a new generation of Souther American lettering artists. She was born in Lima, Peru. After learning from some of the region’s best teachers and exploring the pointed nib on her own, she became a prolific lettering workshop instructor herself. Miraflores is one of Lima’s main tourist attractions. An upscale district with a great window on the Pacific ocean, it is the place where Lu looks for inspiration. It particularly inspired this “Looking flowers” (Miranda las flores), Lunol’s first typeface, designed in collaboration with Ale Paul. Made in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), HyperTurfu was born during the shooting of “The Return of Hyperturfu Xpress 2”. A GoPro on a lego electric train, meters and meters of rails, an empty industrial space, loads of puppets, paper, cardboard, pizza boxes, lights, hot glue and a bunch of friends preparing a one shot scene for a month. The title of the movie was made out of lego pieces, painted with golden spray and hanged over the rails. It was the first inspiration for this awsome superbold font. HyperTurfu is thought from ground up to give a strong impact. It’s gothic retro science fiction 80’s style makes it best suitable for metal music albums or posters. As the “Banco” font it works perfectly with short texts for advertisement, bar, cofee shops concert places or even fancy hairdresser. Italic type was invented by Aldus Manutius in 1499 or 1501, first, before to be a style name, it was a plain font familly name. 'Meeeeoooow'! Seventies is another of my 'funkadelic' attempts (1) to fill the existing gap of seventyish looking fonts. In my opinion, that decade has a hidden treasure regarding type that remains unexplored: Only very few fonts rescue its 'groovy' essence, its ‘colourful’ qualities. But, don't have a cow man , and keep on truckin! With Seventies, my new foxy mama , your projects will stand out among the rest. Since there’s not much information available about this kind of lettering I had to get ideas from other styles: Nowadays it’s easy to find all kind of books or guides to understand and practice how different styles of calligraphy and lettering should be done. However, for some reason, 60s and 70s letters seemed to ignore/be free of rules... Was this suggesting the birth of postmodernism? I incorporated some ideas of the copperplate style of calligraphy: The ductus of its forms may be compared to the way letters are made in snell/engrosser’s script. Obviously, this is just the idea behind; the delicacy of thins is replaced here with the graceful imprint of really thick thicks with a brushy look and tons of good vibe . This type face fills one of the gaps between the world of Roman alphabets and that of linear alphabets. The first to be designed was the set of upper-case letters. The expression of these characters cannot conceal that they were originally intended only for the sculptor's use, as a type face for three-dimensional inscriptions. Their width proportions reflect a dialogue between the contemporary feeling and the legacy of classical Roman inscriptions. The type face was later complemented with a set of lower-case letters and elaborated into further designs. Its clear, concise letter forms end with small serifs which not only make the type face more refined, but above all anchor the individual letter signs visually to the horizontal of the text line. The austere construction of the majority of the letters is balanced by the more exuberant, humanizing forms of the most frequently used letters "a"; "e". (The three variants of the lower-case "e" enable to create rhythmically differentiated texts.) The letters in which a straight stroke is connected with an arch are designed in two ways. That means that the letters "n", "h","m" and the group of letters "b","d","p","q" are conceived in a different way. Thus an interesting tension is created in the structure of the text, which, however, does not endanger legibility. The economizing, slightly narrowed design of this type face predetermines its use for the setting of usual texts. In larger sizes, however, it produces a rather serious, even solemn, impression.

Guerrero dedicated the design to his girlfriend, Valentina, and named it after her.

I saw a cool UT-Ligature on an old (maybe 70's or 80's) Texas Longhorns fan-shirt - it was in 3D and I wanted something like that with my own initials A and B to print it on a baseball hat. I started drawing it and when I was finished, I thought it might be nice to do the same for my officemates. I needed another G, T and K. After finishing that I thought it might be cool to do this for other people as well. Since the source of all the 3D glyphs is found in the regular ones which get moved by a 45 degree angle and then connected with lines , I first draw all the uppercase regular glyphs. The thing that followed was kind of an addiction: after finishing the uppercase letters, I wanted to add lowercase letters, after finishing the 3D letters, I thought it would be nice to have a fill version to layer with the 3D letters. Having a rough, woodcut version of the regular style would be cool, too. And the font is also pretty much suited to make a stencil version. When all this was done, I was interested on how the font would look like without the serifs and curves instead of the 45 degree angles, so I did the Longhorn Sans. Good to use for all sports-related designs, especially retro-style soccer/football shirts. Uppercase characters can be combined to form ligatures or logotypes.

Introducing Regave, a typeface inspired by Danish style lettering based off the work of Knud Valdemar Engelhardt (1882–1931) who designed the street signs for the Copenhagen suburb of Gentofte. The Engelhardt's design was loosely based on the lettering of two Danish architects of the time: Thorvald Bindesbøll (designer of the Carlsberg logo) and Anton Rosen. The signs were so successful that they’re still in use today. Created by German designer Jürgen Weltin, Linotype’s Agilita is a contemporary humanist sans serif family with a wide variety of weights, including both ultra thin hairline options and heavier, dark type. Agilita has rather classical proportions; its clear ascenders and descenders lend more distinct word shapes. Weltin’s design has a dynamic, yet strong and very functional appearance with a fine but clear emphasis on the horizontals. This traditional approach makes it a versatile typeface for large-scale text setting, but it can also be used in complex information design projects, and orientation systems, for example. Hence it was developed carefully into a wide range type family system consisting of 32 styles. This even covers the requirements for display and headline setting. Corresponding condensed weights are suitable where horizontal space is scarce, as in narrow columns and tables, for example. The Agilta Hairline and Agilta Ultra Thin styles were especially made for display use. These fonts should be set at a minimum size of 20 pt for printed project, and about 40 pt on output to laser printers, depending on the paper used. Agilita’s character sets include special symbols and signs that may be used in dictionaries; like arrows for lemmata and signs for cross references, idioms or colloquial language. There are two sets of arrows available in each weight for use in orientation systems. Each font in the Agilta family is built according to Linotype’s Extended European character set guidelines. Originally published by OurType, Dan Milne’s Tasman has found a new home at Retype. Milne first conceived Tasman as a typeface for newspapers. This influenced the proportions and look of the face considerably: the goal was to keep the personality as warm and playful as possible without losing the credible tone required to deliver all kinds of news. A sturdy, warm type family that is neither mechanical nor fragile. It borrows its name from Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603–1659), a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant who mapped parts of Australia in 1642, including Van Diemen’s Land (now known as Tasmania). Tasman’s primary purpose is an unbiased presentation of information; it strives for neutrality over elegance. Its characters are sturdy and unambiguous, sporting strong serifs, punctuation, and diacritics, as well as generously sized small caps and hybrid figures. Rationalized letterforms give the face enough robustness to withstand the stress of screen applications and laser printing. The figures’ three-quarter x-height makes them considerably larger than traditional oldstyle numerals, yet they still integrate with the lowercase much better than lining figures do. Although initially intended for newspapers, Tasman’s somewhat corporate, objective appearance also makes it an excellent candidate for digital and print magazines, websites, annual reports, and corporate identities. Whomp takes its inspiration from the work of an American master in sign painting and alphabet manipulation: Alf Becker . In 1932, Becker began designing a series of alphabets to be published in Signs of the Times magazine at the rate of one alphabet per month. Nine years later, 100 of those alphabets were compiled in one book that became an enormous success among sign painters. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many Alf Becker alphabets were digitized with blurbs that falsely credit an “Alf Becker typeface”. Alf Becker was not really a typeface kind of guy. He was more of a calligrapher and sign painter. His alphabets were either incomplete or full of variations on different letters, and didn't become typefaces until the digital era. This particular Becker alphabet was quite incomplete. In fact, it wasn't a showing of an alphabet, but words on a poster. Alejandro Paul took the challenge of drawing, digitizing, restructuring, and finally building a complete usable typeface from that partial alphabet. He then extended his pleasure by once again playing with the wonderful possibilities of OpenType. IngrimayneType has put letters inside a variety of objects, including bowling pins, book covers, coffee mugs, teapots, pumpkins, Christmas ornaments, train cars, tombstones, old bottles, circles, and rectangles. In each case the letters were placed on a single shape. The use of the Opentype feature of contextual alternatives makes it easy to use two different but alternating shapes. ButterflyWingz puts its letters on the right and left wings of a butterfly. The wings provide a large surface for drawing letters, but they have a odd shape so letters must be distorted to fit. The wings are symmetrical but some letters are not, so the right and left wing versions of the same letter are sometimes quite different. Without the contextual alternative feature one could design a typeface like ButterflyWingz but the user would have to alternate upper and lower case keys. With contextual alternatives turned on, the computer automatically alternates the letters creating a line of complete butterflies. Turning on the Opentype feature stylistic styles one (ss01) replaces the empty spaces with empty wings. However, sometimes an empty wing at the end of a line is unwanted and it can be removed by changing the typeface or by turning off the stylistic style for that character. The family contains two styles, a filled style and an outline style. They can be used separately or together in layers to add color. (Empty wings are on the logicalnot and registered characters.) ButterflyWingz is hard to read and should be used in small doses for decorative effects.

Hey! See Reina Neue in action here! INTRODUCTION When I designed the first Reina¹ circa 2010, I was at the dawn of my career as a type designer. The S{o}TA, short for the Society of Typographic Aficionados, described it as complex display typeface incorporating hairline flourishes to a nicely heavy romantic letterform². And it was like that; that’s what I was pursuing at that time since I was very passionate about ornaments and accolades of Calligraphy. Why? I felt that Typography, in general, needed more of them. These subtle flourishes could breathe life into letters. Maybe, I thought it was the only way I could propose something new into the field of type. However, after some years, I came across a very interesting quote: –Beautiful things don’t ask for attention– Wow! What did this mean? How could something be attractive if it’s not actually showing it. Could this be applied to my work? Sure. I think every type-designer goes through this process (aka crisis) regarding his or her career. At the beginning we love everything. We are kind of blind, we only see the big picture of a project. And that’s not because we are lazy. We actually can’t see the small mistakes nor the subtleties that make something simpler beautiful. We are not able. But, the small subtleties… They are actually everything: With experience, one puts more attention into the details and learns that every single decision in type has to be first meticulously planned. Here I am now, introducing a new Reina, because I felt there was a lot of it that could be improved, also the novelty of Variable Fonts caught my attention and I had to take that to my type library. THE FONT A thing of beauty is a joy forever Now, a decade later, I’m presenting Reina Neue. This font is not just an update of its predecessor: –A thing of beauty is a joy forever– is the first line of the poem ‘Endymion’ by John Keats, and despite the meaning of “beauty” may vary from person to person, and even from time to time (as read in the last paragraph), with Reina I always wanted to bring joy to the eye. In 2010, and now, in 2020. I believe the font is today much better in every aspect. It was entirely re-designed: Its shapes and morphology in general are much more clean and pure. The range of uses for it is now wider: While the old Reina consisted in just one weight, Reina Neue was converted into a big family of many weights, even with italics, smallcaps and layered styles. The idea behind the font, this kind of enveloping atmosphere made out of flourishes, is still here in the new Reina. This time easier to get amazing results due to the big amount of available alternates per glyph and also more loyal from a systemic point of view. However, and as read in the introduction -Beautiful things don’t ask for attention-, if none of the flourishes are activated the font will look very attractive anyway. Reina Neue is ready to be used in book covers, magazines, wedding cards, dazzling posters, storefronts, clothing, perfumes, wine labels and logos of all kind. Like it happened with the previous Reina, I hope this new font satisfies every design project around the world if used, and can be a joy forever. SOME INSTRUCTIONS Before choosing the right style for your project, hear my advice: -Reina Neue Display was meant to be used at big sizes. If you plan to print the font smaller than 72pt, I suggest using Reina Neue, not Display. Otherwise, if the font will be BIG or used on a digital platform, Reina Neue Display should be your choice. For even smaller sizes, use Reina Neue Small. This style was tested and printed in 12pt with nice results. (Note for variable fonts: Print them in outlines) -Reina Italic is not a slanted version of the roman, and this means some flourishes are different between each other. The Italic version has other kind of swirls. More conservative, in general. -All the styles of Reina Capitals have Small Capitals inside. -Reina Capitals Shine should be used/paired ONLY with Reina Capitals Black. The engraved feeling can be achieved if Reina Capitals Black and Reina Capitals Shine are used as layers, with the same word. Variable fonts instructions: -For more playful versions, choose Reina Neue VF, Reina Neue Italic VF or Reina Neue Capitals VF: With them you can adjust between 3 axes: Weight (will change the weight of the font) – Optic Size (will thicken/lighten the thin strokes and open/close the tracking) – Accolades (will modify the weight of the active flourishes). Vic Fieger says: "The letters in Edo were hand-drawn using a thick black permanent marker with a flat head. The head was chopped up using a box cutter to create a "brush" effect. The entire font was made while watching Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. Edo has been used by video game-makers UbiSoft in their game adaptation of the 2007 animated film Surf's Up, as well as ads for the Fuse 2006 Warped Tour. More recently, it has turned up in such places as the cover for the US release of the manga Teru Teru x Shonen, and the logo for A&E's program, "The Cleaner." Besley Clarendon ML is our version of the Clarendon registered by Robert Besley and the Fann Street Foundry in 1845. Besley Clarendon ML represents a significant change from the slab-serif Antiques & Egyptians that had become so popular in the prior three decades. Like Caslon’s Ionic of 1844, it brackets the serifs and strongly differentiates between the thick and thin strokes. Besley Clarendon is also what today is considered a condensed face, as a comparison to the various contemporary Clarendons will show. Robert Besley’s Clarendon was so popular that many foundries quickly copied it, a fact that caused him to complain vigorously. The reason it was so widely copied is simple ó it was extremely useful. It provided the attention-getting boldness to highlight a word or phrase, yet at the same time was compact and easier to read than the fat faces and antiques of the period. It wasn't until sixty years later that the concept of a typeface family of different weights was developed with DeVinne and Cheltenham. Until then, Clarendon served as everyone’s all-purpose bold face. It can be used for ads, flyers, headers or even short text. Don't leave home without it. Palatino® Nova is Prof. Hermann Zapf's redesign of his own masterpiece, Palatino. The original Palatino was cut in metal by August Rosenberger at D. Stempel AG typefoundry in Frankfurt, and released in 1950. Palatino was later adapted for mechanical composition on the Linotype machine, and became one of the most-used typefaces of the 20th Century. Palatino was designed for legibility, and has open counters and carefully weighted strokes. The type was named after Giambattista Palatino, a master of calligraphy from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Palatino is a typeface based on classical Italian Renaissance forms. A modern classic in its own right, Palatino is popular among professional graphic designers and amateurs alike, working well for both text and display typography. Hermann Zapf and Akira Kobayashi redeveloped Palatino for the 21st Century, creating Palatino Nova. Released by Linotype in 2005, the Palatino Nova family is part of Linotype's Platinum Collection. Palatino Nova includes several weights (Light, Regular, Medium, and Bold), each with companion italics. Four styles (Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic) have Greek and Cyrillic glyphs built into their character sets. The Palatino Nova family also includes revised versions of Aldus (now called Aldus Nova), as well as two titling weights. The first titling weight, Palatino Nova Titling, is based on Hermann Zapf's metal typeface Michelangelo, including Greek glyphs from Phidias Greek.
