Sometimes the ugliest pets can be the cutest ones. And the dirtiest fonts can be the most charming ones. Like CA Smut which comes in two styles that can be stacked on top of each other. “Regular” is the shadow, while “Fill” is the filling. Create little masterpieces by playing with different colors, offset or deviating tracking. You can even try to use the “Fill” style on its own, but do so at you own risk. The spacing and kerning is optimized for the use with “Regular”, so be open minded for surprising results. If you ever had the intention to design a horror movie poster, there’s no way around CA Smut.

This font is my first attempt at typeface design. It is based on my own handwriting and I tried to maintain the natural quality, where the letters are quite loose, some going in different directions, thickness and position. It has Open Type features including contextual alternatives, stylistic sets and ligatures. Trying to maintain natural quality of handwriting each glyph has four styles which randomly appear when you type. For example, when there are double letters, the two letters are slightly different. You may also switch off the random feature and use the four styles on their own. The many alternates are best activated in OpenType-aware programs, such as Word 2010, Illustrator CS4+, InDesign CS4+ and QuarkXpress 7+.

Nineteen43 is an elegant typeface with inspiration from the timeless classic "Didot" the style often associated with fashion. Giving our own take on the style, making the hairline stokes and thin as possible to maximise the contrast to the bolder strokes making it a perfect for display use. Nineteen43 has its own unique quirks with striking, bold, abrupt thicker vertical strokes. Elegant smooth serifs and bars not always meeting up with stems like you would expect. The digitization was done with great care and the font was also provided with a number of extras such as ligatures. Torbjörn Olsson's Interrupt is a salty dog of a sanserif, harboring memories of freighters unloading their cargo in a run-down port. Interrupt works great for signs, and looks just fine painted on the side of a wooden crate or stencilled on an old tarpaulin. Interrupt is recommended for use over 36 points. You have run out of packing crates and would like to use it on paper? Sure, Interrupt can add its sturdy sailor's gait to any medium... just don't set any novel in Interrupt. Not even Melville. Kaarna is a rough hand drawn sans serif. The underlying shapes and structure are designed in the style of modern sans serifs which are made livelier by the hand drawn look. The condensed proportions make it especially suitable for use in large headlines and to achieve maximum impact. The hand drawn texture becomes clearly visible in big sizes and quiets down when used small. This allows you to use Kaarna for both headlines and short to medium length texts, ensuring visually unified typography. Because of its design and large character set, Kaarna is well suited for branding, advertising, packaging and editorial use.

DRUMBEAT, a brand new face from Edy Type, coming to help resolve the necessities of loose scripts in Packaging and Editorial Design. Its' very particular thicks and thins and ups and down, makes it very suitable whenever informalities is required. Used with tiny little characters, enlarged to mammoth sizes or filling a large page with it, would show it’s perfect balance and color, almost as if where hand writen. In fact, a truly different script, a graphologist would declare that is written by a person very sure of what he wants, and besides and best of all, it’s pretty.

British designer Jeremy Tankard began Blue Island in 1996 with the idea of creating a completely ligature-based roman typeface, an original but complex task that took years to realize. Individually, Blue Island's letters can appear a bit dismembered, but when set together, they are clearly transformed into words which fall in waves down the page. Successfully balancing readability with intriguing decorative forms, Blue Island is especially effective for titling. As for its romantic name, Blue Island is the title of a poem, also by Tankard, which evokes notions of freedom, escape, intrigue, and the undulating beauty of the sea.

Disco lives on in the alphabet stylings of Reardon AOE. From its uber-fat letterforms to its hole punched counters, Reardon AOE started as a digitization of a film typeface called Joyce Black by LetterGraphics. This flashback typestyle was taken from its limited A-Z and numerals set and fleshed out to include an expanded language glyph set. Reardon AOE finds itself thrown into a late 70’s-early 80’s flashback frame of mind, appealing to all of the disco and video game typography of that time, ready to throw down the vibe for your designs.

Pinch Remix is a recreated version of a typeface I made in 2007. The form hasn’t changed at all, but I composed the family by increasing the number of weights and revising the spacing and kerning. At first it was created from randomly drawing an alphabet offhand on paper with a drawing pen. Then I figured that perhaps it had the framework for a typeface. Originally because it was just a memo, I had already thrown in the trash once. Yet something about it caught me, and when I turned to look down at it, I couldn’t throw it away.

Keswick is a beautiful small town in the English Lake District. It is a good place to hang out for a while and explore the surrounding National Park. During your stay you could visit the Keswick Pencil Factory - which brings us to this nice font… Keswick font was created using a 6B pencil (the crumbly, soft kind) and a lot of patience. I have to admit, the pencil used was not made in Keswick. Sorry 'bout that…

Prushkov is the first typeface that I made. Its name comes from the town I lived in at the time. The design was inspired by both geometric typefaces like Futura, and didone fonts like Bodoni. Its aim (perhaps quite bold) is to blend high contrast with mathematical excellence. Prushkov will work well as a display font, both in uppercase and lowercase. It has a wide array of stylistic alternates for all of the capitals and some lowercase glyphs too.

Another addition to the Whiz Bang Woodtype series, this typeface is a double-wide, extrabold version of the so-called Tuscan style of lettering, popular at the end of the nineteenth century. Named after a small town in Texas, which the locals pronounce "meh-HAY-a." Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

You will see this in the old type catalogs as Dainty. Late in the nineteenth century, type founders developed a number of fonts with a "pen-drawn" look. They wanted to complete with the work of the hand lettering artists who were coming into their own, thanks to the new art of photoengraving

In Issue Number 84 of Push Pin Graphic, Seymour Chwast offered up this rather odd variant of his own extrablack, superbold in-your-(type)face, Blimp. Not recommended for body copy, but makes interesting and unusual headlines. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

At first glance Parking Lot Stencil JNL look quite similar to many sans stencil fonts, but rest assured there are numerous subtle nuances that give the typeface its own unique flavor. It's extended. Somewhat. It's got all the characters. There's a plus. It's fully kerned. That's awesome! And it is rubbed down to the nub. Whuh??? That means it's highly distressed, manually eroded on my work bench. Tortured further to open the wounds using my bitmap editor. Tweaked lovingly and built up to even higher standards of distortion in my vector program. The end result is a font called Sinder. I've even included an "ash" effect. Using the bracket or brace left gives you ashes from left to right as you type your text. Finish your text with ash terminals by typing the bracket or brace right. But be careful. This font is a heavy duty downloader. Make sure all your programs are up to the task, especially before you go converting to vectors.

Now here's a font that is named Like Butterflies, but has got nothing to do with butterflies! What? Why? Well, I recently heard the song "Even flow" by Pearl Jam and took a trip down memory lane - back to my early twenties. I remember how the lyrics affected me, and had an impact on how my life changed the years to follow. Maybe the style of the font does not reflect the inner meaning of the song, but it does reflect a look back in time for me - and the change that took place. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the somewhat simple, handmade style of Like Butterflies and the 4 versions that works very well together!
