This handwritten font was brought to our attention by one of our customers. Tom Bernard Anyz had offered his handwriting font at dafont.com, a free-font portal for private customers where Toms Handwritten is enjoying great popularity. We liked the design at first glance – it is so innocent and sketch-like, similar to a quick note or message. We reworked and completed Toms Handwritten for professional usage. Apart from the already available Latin character set for West and East, we also added Greek and Cyrillic.

Around the turn of the 20th Century, the Inland Type Foundry produced a display face named Studley. It was a variation on a design by another foundry called Florentine. A condensed face with a bold, clean look, the design resembled the warmth and feel of a classic wood type. Best applied to headlines and titles, the font reads amazingly well at even 18 point renderings. Jeff Levine had added his own personal touch to his digital version of this old favorite and renamed it Bayview JNL.

The 1930s era French textbook on lettering "100 Alphabets Publicitaires déssinés par M. Moullet" featured a hand lettered chamfered alphabet with slab serifs reminiscent of sports lettering. Although intended for advertising and signage inspiration, only a partial lower case was illustrated along with the capitals and no numbers or other characters existed. These had to be created from scratch. The finished result is not only a bit of classic lettering from the past, but the font also doubles as a typeface with a sports look and feel. A traditional (rather than stylized) M and N are located on the solid bar key and the broken bar key respectively. Old Sport JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I just returned from a short holiday in Japan. I stayed in hostels and small guesthouses and noticed a peculiar thing they all had in common: they love little notes, telling you where to go, what to do, how to use the microwave oven and when to check out. These notes were sometimes printed, but more often they were handwritten. I found that the Japanese way of writing roman characters is a little, well, unusual. The letters are correct, but they have that typical ‘Japanese look’ - most notably the a and A the b, d and g, the p and P and the t and T. I can’t really tell you what makes them look different, maybe it’s the proportions, but I do know that a Nippon Note is highly recognisable. So, here is Nippon Note, a highly recognisable, handmade font. You don’t really have to be in Japan to use it, but it will give your designs that extra cachet. Novelty Script is a bold dynamic script, sharply delineated, yet fluid. Most of the lower case letters and many of the upper case letters have joins. The typeface was designed by Nicholas J. Werner and Gustave F. Schroeder and patented in March 1893. The original release was by the Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, Missouri. Although a part of ATF from 1892, the Central Type Foundry continued to operate under its own name until 1895. Novelty Script uses our new encoding, as noted in the All_customer_readme.txt. The Euro symbol has been moved to position 128 and the Zcaron/zcaron have been added at positions 142/158 respectively. Otherwise, Novelty Script has our usual idiosyncratic glyph selection, with the German ch/ck instead of braces, Western European accented letters, lower case “o” and “u” with Hungarian umlaut and our usual Hand-in-Hand symbol. But that is not all. With the takeover of the Central Type Foundry by ATF, a group of special characters appeared. All are included in this font, except the “&Co” and the "'s", for a total of nine in all.
