Tertius, with its high ascenders and clubbed serifs, is a modern interpretation of the classic Carolingian style (7th - 9th centuries AD). There was no capital form in the Carolinian hand and Roman square capitals were originally used with it. The Carolingian hand began, after a while, to develop more cursive tendencies as people looked for a way to speed up the writing process. I have “capitalized” on this trend and have devised an appropriate and dramatic set of flowing capitals for this family. With its elegant swashes and bold letter shapes, Tertius embodies the romance of medieval life, of knights, castles, and chivalry. Tertius comes in four styles:- -- Regular: with elegant, smoothly penned characters; -- Crenellated: written with a scratchy pen over rough parchment -- many drops of ink and blotches have been left on the parchment (“Crenellated” means battlements -- the rough protrusions on the top of castle walls); and -- Romantic: the capitals have been loosely overwritten generating a contemporary version of illuminated capitals. -- Illuminated: richly decorated illuminated capitals for use with Tertius Regular (28 characters) All fonts have been carefully crafted, letterspaced and kerned and contain full character sets of 237 characters.

Nightshade was my attempt to bring the Old English fonts up to date. The capital letters still contain flourishes, but they look more machined and less calligraphic. I called the font Nightshade after the plant of the same name. Like the plant, it may be considered to be beautiful or poisonous depending on one's outlook. As a result, it can be applied when an attractive, ornate look is required, or it can be used when there is a need to create a more chilling effect. Display typeface originally created by French graphic designer Marcel Jacno in 1950. Digitised, designed and expanded by Jeremia Adatte with Małgorzata Bartosik from original source material and typeface specimens. THEATRE is inspired by stencil letters found on cargo warehouse wooden crates. "With this unexpectedly-shaped alphabet, I wanted the words to take center stage and create an image in the printed matter" said Mr. Jacno. THEATRE has a second version of each of its letters, painted by hand by Jeremia Adatte and meticulously vectorised and implemented in the font to create words with a hand-made and random effect with no two letters alike, thanks to an opentype feature (enable CALT feature in your favourite design program). FHA Condensed French One could speculate that FHA Condensed French probably started life as wood type for displays, headlines and posters. The exaggerated sharp serifs and condensed forms were not uncommon for that period. At some point, sign painters picked up Condensed French added their own character. At the end of the nineteenth century, Frank H. Atkinson included Condensed French in his samples of lettering for his book, ”Sign Painting, A Complete Manual.” This book became one of the definitive guides for signwriting and hand lettering. In 1999, Mike Adkins digitized Condensed to add to our Atkinson collection. For its re-release, Condensed French has been updated with more language support, ligatures, and OpenType alternates. It has true vintage character but still plays well in more modern designs. A font for all seasons, the condensed forms and sharp serifs fit in every layout from wildwest days posters and creepy film credits to Christmas ads and Mother’s Day cards. While I can’t really see FHA Condensed French as the font for phone aps or video game text, it will provide impact to logos, branding, and product labeling.

Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. He reportedly exchanged many gifts of respect with Saladin, even though the two kings were on different sides of the Crusades. Tokoloshe is a name in African mythology for a mischievous leprechaun-like figure that loves practical jokes and tricking people. There are many books of such African stories, for example Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz. The letter shapes that I used in the Tokoloshe font have inspiration from two sources: -- the spiky character of the font was derived from the wonderfully imaginative, wooden carvings of the Makonde people of beings called "shetani". The word "tokoloshe" is used by other tribes, but from his behaviour, he is certainly a type of shetani. -- some of the letter shapes were informed by Art Deco styles of fonts, for example: Kunjani, Black Tie SF, Selznick Normal, Zaire SF, Binner Gothic and ITC Anna. But the Tokoloshe font, like its namesake, is much more freespirited. Use this font whenever you want to suggest the rich artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of Africa. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. In the case of French stencils the challenge was special, because of the varieties of different widths and weights between the stencil sets – so I made France No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5. The most unique and eye-catching elements of typical French stencils are the figures 1, 2, 3, 7 and a specially 5. The figure 5 changes in style on smaller stencil sizes, its bobble getting replaced by something like a “breve”. The letters J and Q can differ in style too. While the local stencil lettering styles are gradually disappearing in other countries, there are regions in France, such as Normandy and Brittany, where these stencils are still in use today. They are used for technical lettering, which is what stencils were originally intended for, but also for ads and information signs in a more artistic or patriotic context. It took me 12 years to bring this extensive font family to completion. A lot has been changed, transformed, peeled and developed in all those years. For many of my projects I used it as my quarry and so it might have become something like a synthesis of all my imaginations and experiences. Filigree, reminiscent of the delicate lace and jewelry produced in Europe in the 16th to 18th centuries, was inspired by the font Always, and by the way in which the threads (or filia) of the characters in Always intertwined. It has a soft, wafty character. It is best used as a display font at a relatively large size. At too small a size the delicacy of the individual filaments will be lost. Best results also from a combination of upper and lower case characters. Using upper case characters alone will not look as good. Alternate characters and ligatures are also included. If your application program supports "kerning" then I suggest that you turn it on. Although not essential, this will enhance the spacing of the letters. The font contains over 272 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). It also includes a number of "open-type" characters - these enhance the flexibility of the font by providing alternatives that are used either at the discretion of the designer or are determined by the circumstances in which the font is used. It has all the accented characters used in the major European languages.

This is Ekamai, named after the district of Bangkok I lived in. It is based on Quinella, and was supposed to be a quick and easy reworking of that font into a "tight-not-touching" (rather than overlapping) version. As is often the case with quick and easy things, it turned out to be neither, and the vast majority of glyphs needed to be completely overhauled to fit the new system. This face is deliciously plump face, with lovingly rendered curves and just the right amount of cuteness; perfect for food packaging (of the sweeter variety probably!), logos, magazine headlines and the like. It performs admirably in all caps settings. The numerals are expressive hybrid figures (somewhere between lining and oldstyle). The overall feel is friendly and soft, without being overtly saccharine. Ekamai is equipped with subtle contextual alternates (which I'd recommend leaving on) to help with the tight fit, a handful of discretionary ligatures if that's your thing, and a case feature for all caps settings. The stylistic alternates and stylistic set 1 features simply change the # glyph to an attractive numero. Automatic fractions are included along with wide-ranging language support.

The major focus of my life and ministry at this point is book design. In the brave new world of 21st century self-publishing a new paradigm has arisen: the indie small shop. One of the problems is that all books are published as ebooks, and many books are published only as ebooks. There are two problems with this: character availability and licensing. The licensing problem is solved by including an ebook license with all of the Librum E fonts. The character availability is the core of the design. OpenType features do not work yet with ePUBs [though it is in the spec, if I understand correctly]. Kerning doesn't work, and so on. So these five fonts have only the 256-character [or less] ASCII set. A separate small caps is included. It has lining figures {proportional} and small caps instead of the graphics. The other four fonts have graphics to give bullet choices in lists, oldstyle figures {proportional}, and care given to character shapes so they will work better without kerning.
