Vintage sheet music was initially a partial inspiration for what started out as a simple retro typeface, but the basic hand-lettered design from the Art Deco era lent itself to some further experimentation. Geometric shapes were added to the original monoline letters and numerals and the end result was a marvelous display face called Cafe Society JNL. During the 1930s, "Cafe Society" was popular slang for the financially privileged during the Great Depression who dined at fine cafes while others who were able to eat out did so at diners and cafeterias. Available along with Cafe Society JNL is the original version, Cafe Society Monoline JNL.

Kolm Keltek is a collection of ornaments organized into two font files. The ornaments can be divided into two groups: Friezes (borders) and Rapports (patterns). All ornaments belong to the Celtic culture. These ornaments are taken from manuscripts. This makes the font exclusive and unique among other digital collections of ornaments. These patterns perfectly suit to be used in the design of invitations, diplomas, certificates or other printed materials in historical style design. When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?

Sorren Ex is a slightly less condensed, more robust version of Sorren. Its overall width has been increased to the point just before its rounded forms begin to flatten, retaining the aesthetic essence of the original without compromise. Sorren is a definitive bold condensed sans influenced by neo-grotesque designs. A relatively low stroke contrast complimented with sharp, horizontal stroke ends lend an unyielding appearance, while its rounded forms and refined curves juxtapose its inherent strength with grace. Stylistically, Sorren has a classic, timeless feel with a contemporary finish and attention to detail. It is characteristically more elegant and considerably sturdier than the typical condensed sans, lending to its singular disposition.

An image found online of a vintage storefront sign for the Kraus Photo Shop was the inspiration for Photo Developer JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The sign featured a thick and thin Art Deco style lettering with an inline cutting through the thicker strokes. Before the advent of digital photography, and way before chain stores offered in-house processing, neighborhood photo labs were the only place for getting prints from your roll film (unless you wanted to send the film into Kodak for developing and printing). Customers of these stores could also purchase additional film, cameras and photographic accessories from the same location.

Colin is a fresh, somewhat futuristic geometric sans serif type with a large x-height that, to me, communicates both seriousness and cheerfulness. It supports 70 languages incl. monotonic Greek and comes in 7 weights with a small number of alternate glyphs (ss01) for more flexibility. It features fractions, old style and tabular figures. Colin works great in titles, displays and short paragraphs. And where does it come from? To be honest, the reason for this font is a selfish one. I wanted a typeface where my initials (n and c) look identical, just rotated by 90 degrees. That didn’t completely work but, hey, it’s pretty close.

Barbieri is a casual sans type family, based on a German lettering style from the 1960s. The original hand-drawn alphabet was used in a rather peculiar edition of Der Barbier von Bagdad, an opera composed by Peter Cornelius. Our efforts to identify the cover designer have been, so far, unsuccessful. As fans of informal typography and popular lettering styles, we thought these few thin letters deserved a re-incarnation as a complete type family. Andrés Torresi and Marta Sánchez Marco were in charge of the production work. Now Barbieri has 6 weights suitable for packaging, posters, and music covers. It resembles a certain 'Americana' spirit, though with a Germanic twist.

Stuffed Shirt JNL acquires its name from a term popularized during the years when the Art Deco period flourished. The Great Depression further widened the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. Occasionally, some of those that 'had' (and some who pretended they did) came off as standoffish, egotistical and pompously arrogant. Such individuals were referred to as a "stuffed shirt"; a blowhard who thought he was better than others. In this case, Stuffed Shirt JNL is no more than a dual-line adaptation of Playwright JNL, itself an interpretation of the classic Broadway type design in a way that emulates the hand lettering of old-time sign painters.

As a graphic designer, sometimes it’s impossible not to be inspired by the Swiss Style, specifically the work of Armin Hofmann, who is one of its best exponents. Grids and grotesk and neo-grotesk typefaces are a fundamental part of the tools that make this aesthetic possible. A visual language that has caused full admiration since we were students. Therefore, we decided to design Armin as an homage to Hofmann’s work. Technically, we added stylistic sets applied to the letters –G, R, a, g, h, l, m, n, r, t, u, y– to make Armin more eclectic and suitable for the creation of any visual language.

Kessel 105 Text is the text specific variation of stablemate, Kessel 105 . With a narrower x-height and longer ascenders and descenders, its more traditional proportions make it more economical with space and better suited to continuous text. It's a versatile, modern sans, highly legible as a text font and with a clean, elegant look as a display font at larger sizes. It has an art deco flavour with sharp points at the apex of many characters. Brutalista is a typeface inspired by the architectural brutalist style, which seeks to use the expression of raw or raw material. Cullion is a new departure for Greater Albion, being a modern Fraktur, embodying future trends sch as highly stylised glyphs, a single case of lettering and highly evolved letterforms. At the same time it can trace its inspiration back to blackletter traditions, and is inspired by the sort of ironwork to be found in a medieval portcullis. The resulting typeface can sit happily in traditional, modern or futuristic design work. As the gallery images suggest, it does rather lend itself to work with a 'horror' theme, but it could have many other uses too-even in religious work. Cullion is particularly effective in poster headings.

Sign and Display JNL is a long-overdue companion font to 2009’s Sign and Poster JNL. The original design models were Art Deco influenced die-cut cardboard letters and numbers manufactured by the Duro Decal Company of Chicago. Square in shape with rounded corners, the thick cardboard letters were used for making show-cards and other display signage. Subsequently, Duro used the same style of lettering to manufacture water-applied decals for boat identification and other uses. It was a set of these decals (with a black outline and yellow interior) that inspired the outline typeface Sign and Display JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

For many decades, the fashion magazine “Vogue” featured superbly illustrated covers before photography became more commonplace. During the 1930s and 1940s those illustrations were accompanied by many creative styles of hand lettering for its monthly issues. The January, 1930 cover had the magazine’s name lettered in an Art Deco geometric monoline, which became the inspiration for Vagary JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. A vagary [in a simple sense] is when something or someone changes in an erratic or unexpected way (as the wind’s direction or in a person’s mood or whim)… and thus seemed the fitting name for this type style.

Quant is a contrasted typeface with a fresh and well-reasoned appearance. It owes allegiance to classical structure but is a free design and does not refer to any historical model. Although it has strong qualities as a reading type, its distinct and powerful ductus makes it superb for headlines and in display sizes. Quant is well-equipped for ambitious typography. The Quant family consists of 8 styles, comes in OpenType format with extended language support for more than 40 languages. All weights contain small caps, proportional lining figures, tabular lining figures, proportional old style figures, lining old style figures, matching currency symbols, fraction and scientific numerals.

Veotec is a classic humanist sans that skilfully works for both screen and print due to its steep and precise angles enabling more negative space. Not only does this methodical approach improve legibility and readability at small sizes, it allows the bolder weights to feel harmonised and consistent without the compromise of this legibility. Angles are refined and considered with a balance between sharp and round curves adding a unique feature to this font. This also gives a modern and appealing feel at large sizes. Details include 6 well constructed weights, manually edited kerning, which is more open for on-screen devices, ligatures and alternatives.

Stripes is a caps only font and does not contain additional ligatures, because there is an easy way to create as many of them as you like. To form a ligature, convert your word or word string into vectors. Activate the corner points of the straight lines (not the round ones) of a letter and drag them over the next or the previous letter. This way you can create any ligature of your own. Beware of overkilling, it could decrease the legibility of your text. Besides the normal J, Stripes contains a stylistic alternate which should be used to avoid ugly gaps between critical letter pairs (see pdf document).

I created this font to capture the innocence and playfulness of doodle lettering that is created in schools everywhere. Typographic rules are non-existent and the characters are sometimes oddly and incorrectly shaped but that's exactly what gives it charm. What really got me started was Napoleon Dynamite, his drawings and "typography". This font does not mimic what you see in the movie at all, but it attempts to capture the same spirit of high school "doodle typography". My favorite line: "I am pretty much the best artist I know". The font was named after Boondoggle keychains, the other craft most scholars acquire at some point in their school careers.

Grafika is a completely original design, done in an “Art Deco” spirit reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s. I designed Grafika many years ago to be typeset for title cards, and both opening and end credits for the Merchant/Ivory feature film “Savages”. After the film, the design languished in my archives until I rediscovered it. I have digitally redrawn Grafika, completing it with all the alternates, ligatures, math, foreign accented characters and punctuation that weren’t required of the original design for film. Grafika is strongest when set in upper and lowercase—its unique caps extending below the baseline—although all caps settings are encouraged as well.

In the city of Millbrae (just South of San Francisco in San Mateo County, California) stands an office building which formerly housed the Millbrae Theater. California has the distinction of preserving artifacts of its past, unlike many other portions of the US, and the perpendicular "Millbrae" sign with its neon tubes and Art Deco lettering is still attached to the renovated structure. Gene Gable (a friend of type designer Jeff Levine) took a photo of the sign and sent it along as simply an image of great lettering of the past to enjoy, but it triggered the inspiration to create the namesake font Millbrae JNL.

The concept is “Geo-Soft”: characters are constructed from arcs of circle connected by orthogonal straight lines, with few diagonals and nary a sharp corner. The effect has an engaging tension, as soft edges are carefully balanced against rigorous structure. All four of the main weights, including italics, have exactly the same metrics. Beyond these basic styles, suitable for both text and headline, there are additional display fonts—Extra Bold and Black for density, and College, Rust, Rough and Medium Shadow for decorative detail. As options, minuscule-form “a” and “e” are provided at cap height for the classic unicase style, in all 14 fonts.

Mijas Ultra font was designed specially as a headlines and caption text for advertising, packaging and Publishing design. It has strong visual impact, a persuasive personality and seduction appeal throughout its organic shapes. Holografik is a Neo-Grotesk sans serif font inspired by scientific progress, existential wonder, and social oneness. Arp is a neo-grotesk type system exploring the relations between contrast, functionality, and graphic character in one family. This typography comes in 5 different weights including fine strokes with inverted contrast (20), a sharp sans serif (80), and a high contrast heavyweight (240). Moreover, its design is formed by short ascenders and descenders aiming higher legibility, ink traps for display-functional purposes, and includes a wide range of icons, arrows, and symbols which allow creating consistent compositions in digital and print designs. All styles of 640 characters include a display weight with geometric and glyphic style alternates, which expand the proprieties and versatility of the system.

An ad for the annual Variety Club Convention appeared in the March 18, 1940 issue of "The Film Daily. The main headline was hand lettered in a classic Art Deco "solid" style of sans serif - ultra bold and with no counters - but had one additional feature: 'engraved' lines to the left of each character. This has now been expanded into the digital typeface Trade Convention JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Variety Clubs (now know as Variety - The Children's Charity) was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928 by entertainers specifically to aid children. Chocolatte font is a yummy, creamy script font, made entirely with chocolate.. No, sorry, that’s not true. It was made with a pen, but I thought I’d create a nice urban myth. Chocolatte is a pretty useful font: you can stick it on your X-mas cards, write a little poem with it and surprise the love of your life with an enormous amount of chocolate, decorate your cake with it (preferably a chocolate cake) or use it for your… well, whatever. Just remember that this delicious font cannot be eaten, but it does come with copious amounts of diacritics for all you chocoholics out there!

JANE ROE is a family of 10 Sans Serif condensed fonts of geometric construction and neo-Gothic style, a friendly typography with maximum readability, specially drawn for the composition of texts of any size for both printing and screen, signage or headlines and where you need savings in horizontal space. Cenizas is another masterpiece of rough-and-tumble script from the prolific Argentine duo of Koziupa and Paul. Although the overall 'wildness' of Cenizas is reminiscent of popular mid-twentieth-century English display scripts, Koziupa's Latin brush humor and ingenuity remain evident in the underlying structure of the design. Casual, care-free and adventurous, Cenizas can be a great choice for design applications relating to active behavior, like outdoor sports and travel. It also is enough of a rough script to be quite useful in a variety of other design contexts, such as the covers of art books or historical novels, museum literature, music sleeves and posters, or even map designs.
