Ember is an informal script with a judicious sprinkling of ligatures that give it a flowing freehand liveliness. Alghera Pro is a casual script font family.  It was digitally engineered in 1996 by Pat Hickson of P+P Hickson and Steve Jackaman of International TypeFounders, Inc. (ITF).  Jackaman revamped the family in 2017 and added wider language support to include Western, Central, and Eastern European languages. Alghera Pro has a hand-written, antique feel, and was inspired by an old label on a bottle of Portuguese wine.  As with all the Red Rooster “Pro” versions, the family contains a 40% larger glyph set and improved designs.

Designed by Les Usherwood. Chelsea is a ‘modern’ Old Style serif font family designed by Les Usherwood (Typsettra) in the early 1980’s. Steve Jackaman (ITF) digitally engineered the family exclusively for ITF’s Red Rooster Collection in 1993. Usherwood drew influence from Frederic Goudy’s 1911 creation ‘Kennerley Old Style’ when designing Chelsea; Chelsea, however, tends to be wider with a taller x-height. Chelsea has the clean and upscale feel that is present in all Usherwood creations, and its legible design lends itself to projects of any size.

My kids love toadstools, especially the red capped ones with the white spots (they’re called Amanita muscaria, a.k.a. fly agaric - in case you’re wondering). A couple of months ago you could find loads of them in the forest, but now they’ve all disappeared. Toadstool font will not disappear, however. It is a very legible, clean and neat text font with an uneven baseline, slightly bouncy glyphs and more diacritics than a forest has mushrooms. Use if for packaging, kids’ book covers and posters. This toadstool is the non-toxic variety, so go nuts.

The family’s masculine feel has helped it to turn up in a variety of projects, ranging from brand identity to advertising.

Bike Decals JNL captures the fun and nostalgia of the 1950s and 1960s when kids all around the country ran to their local five and dime or hobby store to purchase water applied decals. Xylo is a rugged, no-nonsense typeface that was originally designed in 1924 by the Benjamin Krebs type foundry in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Even back then, Xylo must have been very popular; the design made it at least as far as England. In 1995, after finding its design in an old London printer's reference book, the Letraset Type Studio faithfully converted Xylo into digital format. A time-proven display face, Xylo will convey a feeling of power and strength in any application. Best used big in headlines or logos; Xylo exudes an expressionistic and art deco spirit that just as much at home today as it was during the roaring 20s!

Portmeirion No.6 started life as an experiment by our designer, who was exploring the possibilities of a completely 'over-the-top' display Roman face, bringing in elements of Tuscan and 'Circus' design, along with anything else he felt like. The movie poster promoting the 1962 James Cagney comedy "One, Two Three" had it's text done in free-style hand lettering. Starting with an auto-trace in order to have an isolated version of the black letters separated from the red poster background, the tracing kept the basic forms intact, but with limited accuracy. Cleaning up and digitally reshaping the letters manually to form a more correct version [closer to the original movie poster], additional figures, foreign characters, accents and punctuation were drawn from scratch. This is now available as Handwritten Note JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Bannock Brae Gothic is a sans serif typeface. It is an original creation of Steve Jackaman (ITF) and was created for the Red Rooster Collection in 1999. The typeface was loosely inspired by a typeface from an old obscure wood type specimen book from the turn of the 20th century. Due to its turn-of-the-century roots, Bannock Brae Gothic has an informal 1920’s art deco look. It finds an ideal home in lighthearted projects concerning crafts, food, festivals, and music, but its alternates still give it the flexibility to showcase a classic and timeless feel in any project.

The design of Cyan was inspired by features found in classic Roman and styles like Trajan and Bodebeck. It shows the designer's personal preference for geometric Roman proportions while incorporating open centers (B,P,R) and compact serifs. Unlike Trajan, Cyan has lowercase characters in the regular version. The characters stay true to the same features as the capitals, resulting in an unusually distinctive style. The Regular Capitals version contains Roman numerals. Cyan's weight is similar to Trajan's but the horizontal strokes are slightly bolder resulting in better legibility for small sizes, especially for lowercase characters. There are many subtle details in Cyan that become more interesting in larger sizes, for instance the subtle curves in the serifs and the overall smoothness as a result of the mostly rounded angles. Cyan is a robust font that will exceed expectations in areas never explored before. The name is inspired by the Greek word cyan, meaning "blue". The color cyan can have many different variations. One definition is a color made by mixing equal amounts of green and blue light (it also is a pure spectral color). As such, cyan is the complement of red: cyan pigments absorb red light. Cyan is sometimes called blue-green or turquoise and often goes undistinguished from light blue. Obviously the Cyan family is a perfect companion to the Cyan Sans family.

Old Labels JNL was inspired by the red and white gummed labels that were used for shipping parcels long before self-adhesive materials and desktop publishing rendered the older labels obsolete. The fifty-two glyphs include a generous supply of phrases such as ‘Air Mail’, ‘Do Not Bend’, ‘Rush’, etc. along with a number of blank label backgrounds and decorative frames. One of my favorites. Rundgotisch is a easy to read for eyes that are accustomed to roman letterforms, yet keeps in touch with its blackletter roots. It was released around 1900 by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany. Can be used to set short text passages and pairs easily with many different decorative initials of the period. A very useful typeface. Don't leave home without it. According to Bringhurst, Schelter & Giesecke was formed in 1819 by Johann Gottfied Schelter and Christian Friedrich Giesecke. This old German printing house was sucked up by state-owned Typoart in 1946, after Marshall Zhukov and the Red Army had established Soviet dominion over East Germany.

Originally created with cutting in red litho film, as a headlining typeface for Vinyl music magazine. Its geometric structure was very applicable for early type design experiments on the computer. ...in the early 1980s, he (Max Kisman) became the designer of a small, independent music magazine Vinyl. This Amsterdam-based publication was set up very much as a response to the innovative British magazine, The Face. Responding to Neville Brody's radical designs for that magazine, Kisman began to experiment by creating new headline typefaces for each issue... (Emily King. I used to live in the English Lake District, where I worked in an outdoor gear store. I bought a bright red mountain bike and each day, after work, I cycled up the mountain and hurtled down - heavy metal blasting from my MP3 player. Of course, the bike was a regular MTB, so it got some serious damage after a while, but the adrenaline rush was great! Downhill Dive is a great brush font (made with actual brushes and ink on paper - no tablets involved here!). It is an ode to that wonderful time spent in England. Downhill Dive comes with some really nice ligatures.

Bauhaus Geometric, economical, functional... The good, wholesome, modernist values that once fired up the tutors and students of the Bauhaus became the inspiration for FS Dillon after an exploration of the work of the pre-war art and design powerhouse in the Fontsmith studio. The font combines simplicity and directness with a characteristic Fontsmith warmth. Letterforms are compact, with a generous x-height, and built for maximum clarity and impact. The Bauhaus sought beauty through function. FS Dillon achieves it. Made for TV The weights of fonts for TV sometimes have to be adjusted so as not to “blow” on-screen. FS Dillon was originally drawn for the on-screen presentation branding of Film Four, whose primary colour was red. Black type on a red background looks heavier than white, so Dillon needed two weights that would allow white and black type to be used together, looking balanced and equal. Type design is an organic process. Years after developing FS Dillon, we revisited it, redrawing elements and adding italics to maintain consistency. Olympic You don’t get a much higher confirmation of the functional fitness of a typeface than to have it selected to guide visitors around an Olympic complex. FS Dillon was selected as the font for signage at some of the key venues at the London 2012 Olympic Park, helping to get spectators, athletes and officials from all over the world to their seats and starting blocks on time.

Ice Creamery is a new variation of our Saloon Girl font family complete with italics and fill fonts which may be used to layer different colors into the open parts of each glyph. We don’t recommend using the fill fonts for Ice Creamery as stand alone solid fonts, Ice Creamery Chocolate was designed as a the stand alone solid font for this font family. Fill fonts go back to the 1850's where they would design matched sets of printing blocks and the layering of colors took place on the printing press, they would print a page in black then on a second printing they would print a solid letter in red or blue over the letters with open spaces to fill them in. Most of the time the second printing didn't line up exactly to the open faced font and it created a misprinted look. With the fill fonts in Ice Creamery and other FontMesa fonts you have the option to perfectly align the fill fonts with the open faced fonts or shift it a little to create a misprinted look which looks pretty cool in some projects such as t-shirt designs. I have some ice cream making history in my family, my Grandfather Fred Hagemann was the manager of the ice cream plant for thirty years at Cock Robin Ice Cream and Burgers in Naperville IL. In the images above I've included an old 1960's photo of the Cock Robin Naperville location, the ice cream plant was behind the restaurant as seen by the chimney stack which was part of the plant. If you were to travel 2000 feet directly behind the Cock Robin sign in the photo, that's where I started the FontMesa type foundry at my home in Naperville. My favorite ice cream flavor was their green pistachio ice cream with black cherries, they called it Spumoni even though it wasn't a true Spumoni recipe. Their butter pecan ice cream was also incredibly good, the pecans were super fresh, their Tin Roof Sundae ice cream was chocolate fudge, caramel and peanuts swirled into vanilla ice cream. One unique thing about Cock Robin and Prince Castle was they used a square ice cream scoop for their sundaes.

The hand lettered words “Pere Noel” under a vintage French magazine’s photo of Santa with two bikini-clad beauties inspired the digital version of this quirky, condensed type style. This font is a late 19th Century French script overview inspired by numerous French letters, from around years 1850-1860, during the second French empire, under Napoleon the third. Most of them were written with very tiny characters on light sheets of paper, as postage prices were calculated from the letter's weight. The TTF and OTF versions are enriched with more than 50 ligatures and/or alternate characters. We also offer a choice of two sorts of Capitals. Why "1859 Solferino"? It was the last battle of the Italian independence war, opposing the victorious Franco-Italian army to Austria in June 24, 1859. The Red Cross was inspired directly from the carnage remaining on the battle field.
