Bold Bavarian is a heavy version of my Royal Bavarian that was commissioned by King Ludwig 1st of Bavaria about 1834. I always thought, that I should design a really bold version and now finally I did. But I think it should not be mixed together with the normal version. A Monogram is a lettering character made up of the main letters of a name and sometimes all of them. It is a kind of design which dates from the earliest times of our history. IngrimayneType has put letters inside a variety of objects, including bowling pins, book covers, coffee mugs, teapots, pumpkins, Christmas ornaments, train cars, tombstones, old bottles, circles, and rectangles. In each case the letters were placed on a single shape. The use of the Opentype feature of contextual alternatives makes it easy to use two different but alternating shapes. ButterflyWingz puts its letters on the right and left wings of a butterfly. The wings provide a large surface for drawing letters, but they have a odd shape so letters must be distorted to fit. The wings are symmetrical but some letters are not, so the right and left wing versions of the same letter are sometimes quite different. Without the contextual alternative feature one could design a typeface like ButterflyWingz but the user would have to alternate upper and lower case keys. With contextual alternatives turned on, the computer automatically alternates the letters creating a line of complete butterflies. Turning on the Opentype feature stylistic styles one (ss01) replaces the empty spaces with empty wings. However, sometimes an empty wing at the end of a line is unwanted and it can be removed by changing the typeface or by turning off the stylistic style for that character. The family contains two styles, a filled style and an outline style. They can be used separately or together in layers to add color. (Empty wings are on the logicalnot and registered characters.) ButterflyWingz is hard to read and should be used in small doses for decorative effects.

Flyers, Intros from James Bond films and PlayStation games as well as the typeface Senator from Zuzane Licko inspired the Dutch designer Paul van der Laan to create his font Linotype Rezident. To its design, van der Laan says, I was designing a business card for a friend and I had a certain mood in mind for the typography. I tried to capture this mood in a couple of sketches, drew a few characters directly onscreen and just expanded them into a typeface." And so began Linotype Rezident, with its cool, technical and constructivist appearance which brings to mind computers and virtual reality. And the name? " The name of the font comes from the game Resident Evil. One of the main characters in the game is called Leon and the typeface was initially drawn for a friend of mine called Leon. It also refers to the city of The Hague - where I live and got my education - since it's often called 'de residentie'", where the queen and parliament of The Netherlands are seated."

The Adinkra name, by legend, comes from the King who was conquered by the Ashante people of Ghana. The king, Adinkra, wore wonderful patterned fabrics. Adinkra means “goodbye,” and the symbols were reserved for funeral garments. Today the symbols are part of the Ghana popular culture and around the world. You will find the symbols on everything from housing, clothing, to tattoos. These 100 symbols are accompanied by the Ghana name, a loose translation and what the symbol has come to represent. The meanings and symbols are by no means the complete list and some people do not use the exact same translations and meaning as you will find here. These are for casual use and not historical or anthropologically completely accurate.

ITC Temble was designed by Andreu Balius and draws influences from the European mediaeval period of King Arthur. The characters combine the angular qualities of mediaeval metallurgy with a modern tempo and the symbols included in the font exhibit the same stylistic forms. ITC Temble is perfect for work which should have a mediaeval or mystical appearance.

Koning transports high-contrast sans serifs into the present. Koning is the Dutch for king. Given the design’s elegance, this name should come as no surprise. A classic “American” sans serif with a kink Desphalia belongs to the kind of sans serif fonts that were created in the 19th century. You could also name it “American Gothic”, a sans serif in the style of fonts like Franklin Gothic, News Gothic and similar. Above all, the high x-height characterizes this typeface style, as do the identical heights of uppercase and ascenders. However, I allowed myself a few peculiarities ;-) On the one hand, there is the gently sloping horizontal middle line on letters such as H, E, F, A and e. The M also got gently slanted sides. Some of the lower-case letters have an up- or down-stroke: a d m n p u. This "kink" on the shaft also serves to better distinguish the small l from the capital I — as can be seen clearly with the term »Illinois«. In keeping with the tradition of American typefaces, Desphalia does not have a true italic. Rather, the letters of the “Italic” have the same character forms as the normal upright variant, but in oblique — and so it is not called “Italic” but “Oblique”. Style Set 01: Another American peculiarity is the capital I with dashes above and below. It is included in the Desphalia as an alternate character form. An alternative small l with the “kink” in the ascender is also included — as is a y with the “kink” in the descender. Style Set 02: The corresponding “straight” forms a d l m n p u without the break are included as alternatives in a separate style set. Small caps are uppercase letters that are optically the same size as lowercase letters. They offer a very classy way of emphasis. Desphalia is available in the widths Condensed, Normal and Expanded, the weights include Thin, Light, Book, Bold, Black. Using the variable font, all intermediate levels can be freely selected. The figures are optionally available as tabular figures, proportional lining figures or old style figures.

ITC Typados is the joint effort of Roselyne and Michel Besnard and is composed of characters in two different senses of the word. First, it is of course made of letters and symbols, clean and legible with generous widths and x-heights. There is a hint of Art Nouveau style in the tapering, brush-like strokes. But the figures of ITC Typados are also made of characters in the theatrical sense: little tear-drop heads on tapering bodies that bend themselves into the shapes of an alphabet while maintaining a life of their own. The typeface is based on a recurring character in Michel's sculpture and painting, Ado. Ado is the first character who sings and repeats itself in all my creations," says Michel. "This adventure brings new forms for my painting and my sculpture: coiffed heads, bodies in the form of a cone, arms in the form of spread wings, etc." "Type" plus a number of "Ados" equals ITC Typados."

While viewing a video posted to YouTube of a 1952 drive through Los Angeles, a building was passed for King Bros. Productions, Inc. The lettering on the signage was designed in a stylized Art Deco sans serif, and thus inspired Production Company JNL – available in both regular and oblique versions.

The birth of the monospaced types dates back to the past. There was a need for the creation of typesets for typewriters. The difficulty was to align the different glyphs in the same width. This led to particular problems with letters like “M” and “l”; the former seemed to be squeezed into the same width of all letters and the second one appeared way too streched. Despite – or perhaps because of – the impression of the typewriter is still popular with Graphic Designers. Nowadays there are even monospaced versions of primarily proportional types; for example the the Sans Mono designed by Lucas de Groot or the DIN Mono. Then again, why not the other way round?! In the first half of the Nineties, Erik Spiekermann developed a proportional type named ITC Officina based on the Letter Gothic. According to a survey on the 100 best fonts of all time conducted by FontShop, ITC Officina is in an eighth place, far ahead of its forerunner. This was the reason for me to create a wider design with a Serif and a Sans Serif based on the queen of all monospaced types – the Courier.

African Shield is named for the cow-hide shields used by Zulu warriors. The shield was an essential part of the weaponry of the Zulu Nation. In the days of the great King Shaka, every Zulu warrior was armed with a shield, one or more throwing assegais (type of spear) and a stabbing spear. The high-contrast design of the shield has inspired a font that translates into exciting graphic designs.

This is an original typeface designed in the Arts And Crafts style. It is similar to Arts And Crafts GS, but with a more organic hand lettering style true to the Arts and Crafts movement. It is loosely inspired by the decorative lettering of Jessie Marion King, and the Scottish style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh of the Glasgow School, from which Jessie received her training.

Hamuel Nine Five was inspired by two sources, both with few letters, and different styles. The first one was a fresco in the el-Transito Synagogue, Toledo, built in 1357 by order of Samuel Abulafia, treasurer to the king of Castile. The second one was a mezuzah cover, Morocco, 19th century. Hamuel Nine Five is an OpenType/TTF Unicode font.

This jaunty display face was discovered in one of the many books on sign writing produced by Eric Matthews. The work was signed “King Cole", hence the font’s name. This typeface’s large x-height and tight spacing make it highly suitable for attention-grabbing headlines. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets.
