Futura is the fully developed prototype of the twentieth century Geometric Sanserif. The form is ancient, Greek capitals being inscribed by the Cretans twenty-five hundred years ago at the time of Pythagoras in the Gortyn Code, by the Imperial Romans, notably in the tomb of the Scipios, by classical revival architects in eighteenth century London, which formed the basis for Caslon’s first sanserif typeface in 1817. Some aspects of the Geometric sanserif survived in the flood of Gothics that followed, particularly in the work of Vincent Figgins. In 1927, stimulated by the Bauhaus experiments in geometric form and the Ludwig & Mayer typeface Erbar, Paul Renner sketched a set of Bauhaus forms; working from these, the professional letter design office at Bauer reinvented the sanserif based on strokes of even weight, perfect circles and isosceles triangles and brought the Universal Alphabet and Erbar to their definitive typographic form. Futura became the most popular sanserif of the middle years of the twentieth century. Ironically, given its generic past, Futura is the only typeface to have been granted registration under copyright as an original work of art, and, further irony, given the key part played by the Bauer letter design office, the full copyright belongs to Renner and his heirs. This decision in a Frankfurt court implies that a further small group of older typefaces may also be covered by copyright in Germany, particularly those designed for Stempel by Hermann Zapf. This situation appears to be limited to this small group of faces in this one country, although protection of designers’ rights in newer typefaces is now possible in France and Germany through legislation deriving from the 1973 Vienna Treaty for the protection of typefaces. Mergenthaler’s Spartan is a close copy of Futura; Ludlow’s Tempo is less close. Functional yet friendly, logical yet not overintellectual, German yet anti-Nazi... with hindsight the choice of Futura as Volkswagen’s ad font since the 1960s looks inevitable.

A totally off the wall crazy sans serif display type, Beaucoup started as a digitization of a film typeface called “Bippie” by Facsimile Fonts. Gauche Display is a "tasteless and awkward" script font for those who don't exactly want sophistication in their typographic script usage. The hand-lettered title on a piece of sheet music for 1938's "Don't Be That Way" (as recorded by Benny Goodman) featured squared letters with rounded corners, slight variants in line thickness and interesting "overhangs". Additionally, some letters closed off on one end while others were opened, giving the impression of a slight "maze" effect. This unique song title was enough of an inspiration to be turned into Musical Arrangement JNL.

The Quickstep Bold, a 'quick' font, originally made for the 25th anniversary of SSP Printing Co. in Amsterdam. First used for an intro spread of a Brian Eno quote in Wired Magazine (#3.05, May 1995): "The problem with computers is that they don't have enough Africa in them. What's pissing me off is that they use so little of my body". For a less outspoken expression, the Quickstep Sans was developed later.

After visiting Milan, I stumbled upon the Sforza castle, and found some interesting type on the inner courtyard castle walls. I became inspired by what I found, and decided to design a typeface based off of the limited quirky letterforms. Thus Sforza was born, with ligatures galore, alternates, pictograms, and swooshes. Sforza is a roman style typeface with a quirky flair. It has loads of ligatures, nested letterforms, and tails and swooshes for endless combinations.

An elegant geometric linking script that uses OpenType programming to intelligently substitute "beginning" and "ending" characters with uniquely designed variants. The family also includes swash alternates that can be toggled on or off in the Opentype panel. Pixel Promise is my wannabe pixel font. Yes, it is not a pixel font…but it is handmade and the “pixels” are deliberately off here and there. Nevertheless, when typing with Pixel Promise, you get that retro gaming feeling, and before you know it, you feel like you just want to insert another coin, press 1 or 2 players and complete that level! :) I have added 5 different versions of each letter and multilingual support

Mechanikschrift, roughly German for “mechanical writing”, is a typeface from Noah Rothschild and Victory Type. The aesthetic of this font is just what its name points towards: machine-like structure with a German flare. Minimalism is often associated with German design, and Mechanikschrift is a minimalist typeface. Furthermore, the designs of the characters, outside of the general theme of squared-off corners and angular appearance, are related to Herbert Bayer’s work at the Bauhaus.

Switched On and Switched Off where two fonts developed by placing points on a pre-defined square grid template. The experiment was to explore all the variations possible by just using straight connecting lines on a grid. I stumbled on the final concept, almost accidentally, and was amazed by the numerous possibilities. Both designs where created to work together. By adjusting the stroke and inline proportions between the two fonts, I was able to achieve a good overall color balance between 'Switched On' (dark letters on a light background), and the 'Switched Off' design as a knockout treatment (light letters on a dark background). Used in this way, both fonts visually appear similar in overall weight and proportion. They harmonize well together. Used separately, they make for some interesting visual effects and headline treatments. The fonts are best used at large point sizes, but they are still legible in a variety of smaller sizes. I think that by experimenting with these two fonts one can achieve some stunning visual effects. Explore and have fun.

MVB Dovetail is an editorially focused text serif designed by David Sudweeks. The working idea for the typeface came from a design school letter-making exercise: Take a pair of scissors and a few large sheets of paper, and start cutting. The resulting letters and the action itself of cutting them out of paper informed the type design process, producing strong, simple shapes and an open, inviting texture. Dovetail’s tone is crisp and straightforward. Its classic letterforms, set off with a touch of playfulness, give the design both a practical and spontaneous personality. Thirteen or 14 years ago I admired, out loud, a book I found on a shelf in Matt Carter's office. That Christmas I was pleasantly surprised to find that Matt had found another copy of the book and he gave it to me. The book was about the life of Oswald Cooper and it contained numerous specimens of Cooper's lettering jobs. Among them was an interesting image of 7 letter that spelled out the word 'Robusto'. These letters were used as the model for the font Robusto. All I needed to do was develop 221 other glyphs to finish the font.

I took some elements from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco (type) styles. And modernized it by cultivating the beautiful curved features of both styles and playing with the stylish fluid lines and open structures. The Bitstream version of Letter Gothic designed by Roger Robertson in 1956-62 for IBM electric typewriter. It is a condensed, monospaced font resembling a typewriter face, suitable for tabular material. Primarily used for slide presentations and for word processing applications, Letter Gothic is very helpful for printing out software source listing, for informal office communications and for tabular charts where alignment of columns is important. Besides, being a clear and easy-to-read font, Letter Gothic is popular now for display and advertising matters. Cyrillic version was developed for ParaType in 2000 by Gayaneh Bagdasaryan.
