Ahhh, who doesn't want to sleep late? That’s excactly what a “sovetryne” wants ... even though he/she often sleeps way to much! But that’s not the case with this font. It’s legible, even though it’s slightly worn. Change between upper- and lowercase letters to variate the typing - and turn on ligatures, in order to use the substitution of double letters such as aa, bb, cc and many more!

Switched On and Switched Off where two fonts developed by placing points on a pre-defined square grid template. The experiment was to explore all the variations possible by just using straight connecting lines on a grid. I stumbled on the final concept, almost accidentally, and was amazed by the numerous possibilities. Both designs where created to work together. By adjusting the stroke and inline proportions between the two fonts, I was able to achieve a good overall color balance between 'Switched On' (dark letters on a light background), and the 'Switched Off' design as a knockout treatment (light letters on a dark background). Used in this way, both fonts visually appear similar in overall weight and proportion. They harmonize well together. Used separately, they make for some interesting visual effects and headline treatments. The fonts are best used at large point sizes, but they are still legible in a variety of smaller sizes. I think that by experimenting with these two fonts one can achieve some stunning visual effects. Explore and have fun.

A Venetian serif in 6 styles The Apolline typeface family was created by Jean François Porchez as a means to study the transition from Renaissance writing into the first printing types. Rather than sticking to the method commonly used these days for the creation of revivals of Jenson or Bembo types, it seemed more interesting to try and get in the same mindset as those exceptional designers during this pivotal period in the history of typography. Thus Apolline is an exploration of the design methods used by people like Nicolas Jenson and his contemporaries for adapting handwriting with its multiple occurrences (a, a, a, b, b, b…) into single, unique signs (a, b…). Initially Jean François made drawings modelled after his own calligraphy. They were done at a very small size on tracing paper (2 cm high for the capitals) to preserve the irregularity of human handwriting. Besides emphasising the horizontal parts of the letter forms, the serifs were designed asymmetrically to reinforce the rhythm of the writing. The final drawings were produced at a large size (10 cm high for the capitals) to allow for subtle optimisation of specific details. The very narrow and fluid Apolline italic Influenced by various concepts for an ideal italic by Van Krimpen, Gill, etc. Apolline italic was designed at 8° degrees. Although the structure of the letterforms were informed by chancery scripts, the italic has full serifs like the roman. Very narrow and fluid, its unique design creates a good contrast when used in combination with its upright counterparts. Thanks to the presence of the serifs similar to roman typefaces it sets very neatly in large sizes. The next step was digitising the drawings with Ikarus (the pre-Bézier-curves era) to create the final roman and italic fonts. Two years later, when the family was expanded to six series the same method was used, this time with Fontographer. This was necessary for correcting a few problems caused by the conversion to Bézier outlines, and to add intermediate weights. Before the advent of feature-rich OpenType, quality type families consisted of several separate fonts for each weight to provide users with various sets of numerals, an extended ligature set and alternates, ornaments, and so on. Reba Samuels is based on the 2007 release Rebecca Samuels. While Rebecca was largely intended for text use Reba aims to be more versatile with an extended weight scope and added cut varieties. While Rebecca’s slab character is developed in the Reba serif, the ’seriffed’ italic of Rebecca is abandoned in favor of a simple italic sans, better matching the serif in plain text. The weight extremes are very useful for headlines while the middles do better in text. The robust and angular shapes of the serif matches the straightforward sans. The extreme contrast between the thin and the black cuts opens up great opportunities in any design project.

Mercado is a versatile stencil font family with 3 styles and 3 weights of each style. I was inspired by local boutique supermarkets to create a stencil font family with both upper and lowercase as well as a large international characterset. Mercado Regular can be used at small point sizes without the stencil gaps filling in. It also makes a bold statement when used large. Hideko is a visually unique font that has the essence of both serif and san-serif fonts through integrating the body structure of san-serif while retaining the calligraphy from serif. Hideko was inspired by synthesizing Japanese calligraphy and western letters. During the process of creating Hideko, I attempted to make a font only for oriental use, but the result is a font with versatile uses. Edelgotisch is a bold Jugendstil design that shows its strong blackletter roots. This typeface, along with a set of initial letters, was released by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany about 1898 and is very similar to Eckmann-Schrift released by Rudhard'schen Giesserie (later Klingspor) during the same period. One suspects they may have been in direct competition. The decorative devises of the initial letters for Edelgotisch have a simpler, bolder line than for Eckmann. In the initial letter set, the ligatures aesc (AE) and ethel (OE) were generated by embedding the ‘A’ and ‘O’ respectively inside the upper left corner of the ‘E.’ The accented caps were given similar treatment, with the exception of the cedilla. Regarding the I-diaeresis, we considered rotating the accent ninety degrees to avoid and possible misconstruction. On further reflection however, we realized it was silly and unnecessary. No one would look at the accented letterform and see anything but what it is. We have also included four decorative ornaments and a frame with each font.

Salacious is my soft/rough all-caps font, inspired by both comics and grafitti. The weight and width of the letters varies a bit. Not in a disturbing way, but more in a lively and organic way. I've added 5 (slightly) different versions of each letter (which automatically cycles as you type!) The letter shapes are a bit rough, due to the fact that they are handmade, and all corners are rounded, which gives a nice soft look!

Chef Lorenz about the TpKurier recipe: “TpKurier is the second redesign we did of Courier. The first redesign in 2000, although based on a five-unit grid, was drawn completely by hand. Six years later we designed another grid version of Courier, and the TpKurier family was born. This version is completely constructed up till its last detail. We didn't want to correct ‘mistakes’ deriving from the use of the grid, but instead make them visible (see “S”). TpKurier is based on a very simple grid, composed a proportion of four units high by two units wide. A series of other links between them make it possible to form a font from this grid. We felt it was important to consistently work within these limitations so that any unexpected asperities would help provide the font with its character. Even though it is a rough constructed typeface it was important to us to design real italic lower case letters and not just a sloped roman (see “a”, “g” or “s”). The first family published contained a serif and sans-serif version of the TpKurier, with italic and bold.”

This is a free abridged edition of the full-featured Gutenberg B and Gutenberg C fonts.
