Tom Lincoln's award-winning type design work since the 1960s has been one way or another of expressing his fascination for the Roman majuscules inscribed at the base of the Trajan Column in Rome. This time he has really outdone himself by bringing us Roma, a definitive, contemporary, mature sans serif expression of those majuscules. With Roma, Lincoln is not satisfied with simply creating a proper "Trajan Sans". He goes on to make it a family of four weights, with built-in small caps and oldstyle figures, then he really goes to town with the options he makes available for shading and multi-color settings. Precise renderings of the Roma capitals are provided in different fonts that can function individually or be layered atop each other for two- or three-color treatments. Linotype Mindline is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. With Mindline, the German designer Critzler plays with geometry and typefaces. Each character is basically a rectangle with a geometric form etched in it which happens to be a member of the alphabet. This formal style comes from the advertisement typefaces of the 1920s and is reminiscent of the constructivist posters of this time. The appearance of the characters take priority over the funcitonality and the eye can hardly recognize the forms of letters and numerals which meet it everyday. Linotype Mindline makes us take another look at forms which we see so often that we hardly notice them, only reading them for the information which they impart, and the font is therefore best used when the content of the text less important is than the impression its forms make.

Thirty years after its first appearance, Jovica Veljović has produced ITC New Veljovic Pro, a completely revised edition of his first typeface, ITC Veljovic (1984). Prof. Veljović has tapped into all the experience he has garnered over the past decades; by carefully adjusting the proportions of the characters he has provided the new typeface with a more harmonious presence. The serifs have been subtly curtailed and the letters made slightly more condensed. Some new features of ITC New Veljovic are the double-story “g” with its completely closed loop and the more open forms of the “c” and “e”. In the italic variants, the latter is much rounder. Thanks to Veljović’s outstanding work, the optimized ITC New Veljovic can now be used in all contemporary applications. The new Condensed style saves considerable space when it comes to setting longer texts. The Display versions show off the striking, crystal-clear shapes of the design at their best in larger point sizes.

Deus is when type design is brought to extreme. It tries to answer the question whether you can design all glyphs in one axis of stress. It does not try to be all purpose, useful at all sizes, legible or readable and most of all it does not try to be neutral. It has its own style you either accept or not. But if you do so, it has many great stuff inside. Every glyph has the same width across four masters, so you can change the style in one title or even make an animation out of that. It also has some cool animated emojis, so make sure you take all four styles! Deus has two sets of styles. "Deus" that has an expanded glyph set, and "Deus Basic" that comes with a limited glyph set. You can play around with "Deus Basic" since you get it for free, then fall in love with this font family and go for the full version.

When work started on the design of Gelica, there wasn't the same glut of retro-ish soft serifs there is today, and if I'd managed to complete it quicker, it might have been more trendsetter than bandwagon jumper, but that's the way it goes sometimes! I still think it's useful and unique enough to be a worthwhile addition to your typographic arsenal. Although obviously influenced by Cooper, it actually owes more to the lesser known Goudy Heavyface and Ludlow Black, particularly in the concave serifs. I wanted the family to be friendly and approachable, but not overly cutesy, and usability was always the prime concern. A nice weight range with matching italics was a must, along with useful OpenType features, and various figure styles. This is a display family first and foremost, but is also comfortable at smaller sizes for longer copy, and so works well in a supporting role to a more exuberant titling font.

In older American slang, a "bum steer" is a bad tip, some bad advice or being sent in the wrong direction (to name a few examples). Bum Steer JNL was modeled from some playful hand lettering found on a piece of early 20th Century sheet music entitled "When Uncle Joe Plays a Rag on His Old Banjo". It's very possible that "Hobo" (a popular type design of the time) was a strong influence on the sheet music's style of title lettering. It seems that songwriters in those bygone days were prone to cramming as many words from a line of their song into the title itself. Another such example of a wordy song title which coincidently is in keeping with the theme of a "bum steer" (pun intended) is a novelty number from 1915: "Cows May Come and Cows May Go but the Bull Goes on Forever" (words by Vincent Bryan, music by Harry Von Tilzer). Floki is a contemporary condensed sans serif with sixteen styles ranging from extralight to extrabold and accompanying italics. Nexus (2004) consists of three matching variants – a serif, a sans and a slab – which makes it a highly versatile typeface. Nexus started as an alternative to Seria, a typeface Majoor had designed some 5 years earlier. But soon the design developed into a new typeface, with numerous changes in proportions and in details and with a redrawn italic. I am (trying to) learn Danish using an app on my phone. The grammar and vocabulary are not that difficult, as the Danish language is very close to the Dutch language. The pronunciation, however, is quite tricky. Words look simple when written down, but when pronounced, they sound very different. Take ‘pige’ (‘girl’) - it reads ‘pee-guh’, right? Well, it is pronounced ‘pee-uh’. Or how about ‘brød’ (meaning bread)? If you keep in mind that the o-slash is pronounced as the ‘i’ in bird - almost like ‘uh’, it should be br-uh-d, right? Wrong again. It is pronounced br-uh-l. Aaargghh! I will succeed, hopefully! Utroligt is a Danish word meaning ‘incredible’. It is a nice, uncomplicated all caps font. I made it with a cheap rollerball pen and some nice French paper. Comes with double letter ligatures and all the diacritics you’d like - including the danish ones.
