Whenever I've stayed in Munich my friend Michael Bundscherer and I go on a typographical expedition. When we talk about that, we remember the bygone world of sign painter. On one of the facades of a furniture shop in Munich, you can discover the lettering of the name in golden letters. This one convinced us because of the simple elegance Art Deco. These letters on the facade are in any case the character set, which forms the basis of this document. The missing (especially the lowercase letters and the numbers) were modeled. The "OPEN" called version tries to replicate the 3-D effect. The font is particularly suitable for shorter texts and headlines.

Albertus® Nova is a faithful digital revival of Berthold Wolpe’s earlier design of Albertus and is one of the five designs in The Wolpe Collection of typefaces. This new design enlarges the typeface set from its previous two weights into a robust set of five ranging from thin to black, all with extended language support including Cyrillic and Greek. Berthold Wolpe began working on Albertus in 1932, at the encouragement of Stanley Morison. Morison saw an example of Wolpe’s engraved lettering and liked it so much that he commissioned a typeface based on the design. Since then, the original Albertus typeface has been used on book covers, in branding, on signs and in video games.

Billowed is a typeface family inspired by a simple shape that tessellates in three different ways: in a single orientation, in two orientations, and in four orientations. The shape resembles a billowing sail, with two concave edges that are adjacent and two convex edges, also adjacent. Forcing letters into this template shape results in some oddly shaped letters, but the result should not be judged by individual letters but by how the words and strings of words appear. Billowed was designed as an alternating-letter font in which two sets of characters alternate. The alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature contextual alternatives (calt). To get the ripple pattern not just horizontally but also vertically, lines should alternate between the right and left styles and leading set to the same value as the font size. Billowed is monospaced with tight letter spacing to accentuate the ripple pattern. The family includes outline styles that can be used in a layer above the solid style to add color. Undulate was not designed for any particular use but as a challenge to fit letters into a particular geometric shape. The unusual patterns that result are eye-catching and may be useful for advertising or signage and in other places where one wants attention-grabbing lettering.

Obliterate is a self destructing sans-serif typeface created from old rub off typography sheets brought back from the brink of becoming landfill fodder. It contains four sets of capitals and one alternate set of numerals for a randomized look. Sworded is a font family of 8 fonts that was inspired by such diverse things as architecture, tombstones, video games, watching old movies or reading comic books. The art of creating beautiful letters has slowly declined with the rise of the digital age and its solid-colour, 2D fonts. And most of the time, the care given to typography in cultural products just isn't what it used to be anymore. This was the inspiration for Sworded, a family of 4 layerable fonts that can bring a feeling of depth to its letters, and offers endless possible combinations. When Candy Script was officially released and in the hands of a few designers, I was in the middle of a three-week trip in North America. After returning to Buenos Aires, I found a few reactions to the font in my inbox. Alongside the congratulatory notes, flattering samples of the face in use, and the inevitable three or four “How do I use it?” emails, one interesting note asked me to consider an italic counterpart. 

I had experimented with a few different angles during the initial brainstorming of the concept but never really thought of Candy Script as an upright italic character set. A few trials confirmed to me that an italic Candy Script would be a bad idea. However, some of these trials showed conceptual promise of their own, so I decided to pursue them and see where they would go. Initially, it seemed a few changes to the Candy Script forms would work well at angles ranging from 18 to 24 degrees, but as the typeface evolved, I realized all the forms had to be modified considerably for a typeface of this style to work as both a digital font and a true emulation of real hand-lettering. Those were the pre-birth contractions of the idea for this font. I called it Sugar Pie because it has a sweet taste similar to Candy Script, mostly due to its round-to-sharp terminal concept. This in turn echoes the concept of the clean brush scripts found in the different film type processes of late 1960s and early 1970s.
 
While Candy Script’s main visual appeal counts on the loops, swashes, and stroke extensions working within a concept of casual form variation, Sugar Pie is artistically a straightforward packaging typeface. Its many ligatures and alternates are just as visually effective as Candy Script’s but in a subtler and less pronounced fashion. The alternates and ligatures in Sugar Pie offer many nice variations on the main character set. Use them to achieve the right degree of softness you desire for your design. Dimentia is a twisted, hand drawn, dimensional, layered sans serif typeface. What more do you need?

I was working at Bozell Worldwide, an advertising agency, on their yearly promotional pitch. An art director was looking for a condensed informal headline treatment to be used on one of the new ad campaigns. I took several different font designs and started to condense and scale the proportions in the hopes of finding several good solutions. They finally settled on a version of Times Roman, scaled horizontally to about 50 percent proportions. I liked the look so much that I later went back to the drawing board and refined the concept by adding slanted serifs and a varying alignment on all the letter forms giving the typeface a very casual and informal appearance. At about that time, I was reading a book by Jack Kerouac, and was so inspired by his writings on the ‘beat generation’ that I decided to name the font ‘Beatnik’. Afterwards, I added a set of true small capitals and old style figures. I'm currently working on additional weights and variations to expand this ‘hip’ new font series. Groovin' baby.

Square and crisp coding fonts might be easy on the pixels, but are they easy on your eyes? Do they keep you entertained at work? Codelia is a monospaced humanistic typeface designed for coding with focus on comfort and fun without sacrificing legibility or coding functionality. It's fun but not a joke. It was designed with the idea to be used on comic books, mobile applications and children’s books, thus it has a Dancing Baseline version (Romper DB) and a Slanted version (each of them in four weights as well). The family is equipped with 450+ glyphs, has Latin Extended and Cyrillic Support (both Russian and Bulgarian) and a lovely set of extras. The family includes a lot of discretionary ligatures and alternate letters for more variety in the design. Overall, Romper is cute, amiable and really versatile, so it will fit most applications - think greeting cards, menus, merchandise, books, packaging, websites, etc.

Prêt-à-porter is a project developed as part of a series of type experiments appearing on the blog ‘Letritas’.
