Malmö Sans was born from the preconception that geometry is neutral, and neutral fonts have a wide application window. No ornaments, no quirks – just clean. We are irregular, not always logical, and, foremost, we are human. Mr Robot is a typeface designed for our next book for children. We wanted to have a colorful, dimensional and edgy looking letters for headlines. There are three ways to use Mr Robot. You can align three text frames with same text but with different colors and font styles (Regular, Shadow 1 or Shadow 3 and Shadow 2) or with ALLinONE font style but select a different OpenType Stylistic Sets (set 1 is like Shadow 1, set 2 like Shadow 2 and set 3 like Shadow 3). This works great but we don’t like to have unnecessary text frames in our layouts so we added a very cool Contextual Alternates OpenType feature. You just need Mr Robot ALLinONE style and only one text frame. First make sure that Contextual Alternates is off. Type every character three times (RRROOOBBBOOOTTT), select colors for each letter (first letter of every three is a side shadow, second is bottom shadow and third is a front of the dimensional letter). When everything is set just turn Contextual Alternates back on. Styles and alignment will be set automatically. Check out the Users Manual for a visual explanation. For web fonts it is better (at least for now) to use the first method (with font styles) as the OpenType features are not supported in older browsers.

I recently walked part of the South West Coast Path in the UK. A couple of days in the hike, I came across a small cafe and I decided to have an oat latte (I am lactose intolerant). Since it was early in the morning, the breakfast menu was out and one of the items I noticed was ‘Overnight Oats’. I normally cook my oats with some lactose free milk and water, but apparently you can soak them overnight, add fruit and nuts and eat it like that. I tried it, it’s ok, but I think I prefer the cooked version. Overnight Oats is a bit of an odd font: it is very higgledy piggledy, yet legible and unique. If you want something out of the ordinary, then this may be your font!

I was in a bit of a gloomy mood just before I created this font. I had no inspiration whatsoever (which always affects me in a bad way). I was trying to create a font using broken satay skewers, as using those gives the letters a unique look. I broke about 25 skewers and they all broke ‘the wrong way’. Yes, it’s pathetic, I know, but that’s how it is. I decided to go to the gym and do a little workout, hoping my dark mood would pass. When I came back, I broke one more skewer and lo and behold, it broke exactly the right way! I made this font in one go, using that fantastic skewer and lots of Chinese ink. Darkness Rising comes with all the diacritics you’ll need, plus double letter ligatures and some cool underlined alternates.

Since many years I live in Munich and read the daily newspaper Abendzeitung. One morning they had redesigned the paper, using Eric Gill's Joanna for the body copy and a tweaked version of Franklin Gothic for the headlines. Since both typefaces are my all-time favorites, I was very pleased. The old hand-lettered title lettering designed by in-house designer Ernst Friedrich Adler around 1947 or 48 was untouched as it always was. Adler had worked for the newspaper an incredible 47 years! Ernst Friedrich Adler celebrated his 100th birthday in the summer of 2007 looking very healthy. But someone had adapted his title lettering for use in the chapter headings, and I did not like the way that was done. Every morning I saw those letters and thought "one day I have to clean that up". About 15 years later I finally did it! Being at it, I designed the whole typeface and added a second fancy cut. And, what do you know, the people at the Abendzeitung called me up and said they liked what I did and started using it. So since that day in 2005 I can read my morning paper without having to wonder about the chapter headings. Guilloches were – in the old days – used to make the falsification of banknotes more difficult. The engraving of these intricate lines was done by a highly specialized mechanical machine, which was operated by an equally highly specialized engraving artist. Once the settings for a specific curve were changed back to zero it was very difficult, if not impossible to set them back to the old design. I have designed a useful set of Guilloches that join to form ribbons that create a kind of op-art 3d effect. Under the keys A-U and a-u you find joining pieces. Under the keys V-Z and v-z I placed start- and endpieces. 0-4 are different lenght straight extensions and 5-9 are not quite so straight extensions. All other keys are corner pieces that can be used as stand-alones or put in rows to make for superb decoration. The rasterized square (clear, therefore 4 as part of the font name) was the constructive basis. The intention was to put all characters within this grid and produce a highly structured, yet lively, resting in itself, display font. Relaxed but exciting, just. An absolutely noteworthy detail are the classical construction principles (based on a typography book from the 50's for poster designers), the so-called optical weighting, derived and slightly exaggerated character elements: The characters are not purely symmetrical and the curve shapes do not close justified with the surrounding square. Loops and tongues slightly hang over; the upper bows are slightly less protruding than lower ones, etc. The kerning is tuned to fit these design details: the white space between the characters match the same filling space.

When designing a typeface, one has to be conscious of superfluous details. Although I am always tempted to add little personal touches, experience taught me that the phrase -less is more- is totally true. In Model, the letters (like models do) participated of a contest: An event in which models engage in competition against each other, often for a prize or similar incentive. The prize was staying in the font! yay! Tall, delicate, refined, the right amount of elegancy: These were some of the aspects to be chosen. Typographically speaking, these things were achieved thanks to a tall x-height (which leaded the font to be somehow condensed), a subtle contrast between thicks and thins, and just the right amount of decorative swirls. The result is a nice script that can be used in magazines, invitations, posters, book-covers and works very well when used over photographs. Get Model and let it be the star of the catwalk. STYLES Model Pro and Model Small Pro are the most complete styles of the font. Both have all the ligatures and decorative glyphs seen in posters above (OT programmed). Model Std One, Std Two and Std Three are reduced versions of Pro. This means they have less glyphs inside.
